I hesitated before picking up Adrian's call wondering why he was calling me. Funnily, this is the first time Adrian has called me since we got married.
“Hello”. I muttered holding the phone close to my ear.
“Jenny, get ready you are joining me here in California. There is an important event I need to attend and you must be present. As a matter of fact, you have the next one hour to be here and your flight is in twenty minutes”.
And just like that, he ended the call. I sat there dumbfounded for a few seconds trying to digest what Adrian told me. Then suddenly, the statement “your flight is in 20 minutes” rang in my head, making me snap back to reality.
I flew to my room and jumped under the shower; of course, I had to take a quick bath to smell fresh. Afterward, I brought out my traveling bag from the wardrobe; it was pink in color with the perfect girly vibe. I threw a few official clothes in it and added a dinner dress, hoping I would wear it to the event. I packed up other necessary items and soon was out of the house, astonished to see the convoy ready; Adrian must have informed his bouncers.
When we set out for the airport, I had seven minutes to catch my flight. I was cursing Adrian under my breath because I knew he intentionally informed me late about the trip, maybe to get back at me for what I did the previous day. My subconscious mind suggested that I ask Adrian if I could board one of his private jets, but I quickly dismissed it because I knew Adrian would never agree to it; how then would he see me suffer if he lessened the stress by allowing me to take his jet?
But now my heart was beginning to race because of the high speed at which we were driving. Adrian's cars were the best in the world with every trending technological feature in it. However, the driver's initiatives worked as I landed at the airport two minutes before the deadline; since I was a VIP, I was attended to instantly.
I dozed off immediately after the plane took off. Yes, that's because I have a phobia of height, and if I remained conscious when I was high in the sky, I might pass out. I swallowed some sedation pills to help me sleep off effortlessly, and the drug was supposed to expire after 30 minutes, the exact time the plane was going to land in California.

Adrian was seated comfortably on the executive chair when I hurried into the hotel room. We stared at each other mouth agape with confusion written on our faces.
“What is going on?” Adrian asked, finally breaking the silence.
I think I was the one supposed to ask that question because I was lost. The person who gave me one hour to fly from America to California was dressed in pajamas, comfortably sitting on an executive chair in one of the most luxurious hotels in the country, scrolling and tapping away on his laptop.
“Why did you run in like that, is anyone chasing you?”
He asked again this time with a wave of fear in his voice.
“I thought you told me over the phone that we have to be at an event in 1 hour?” I asked.
I was just so indescribable at that point. My body language and mental state were delusional.
Adrian only scoffed and sat back on the chair, picked up his laptop, and continued with what he was doing before I went in.
“Maybe you didn't hear me well. The event will take place in the evening, you can check into your hotel room till then.
What! Could he be serious with what he was saying? He made me risk my life just to meet up with the time he gave me. I fell from the stairs on my way out of the airplane and bruised my knee; I bumped into people countless times on my way to his room, and as if that was not enough, I slipped and fell in the elevator. I went through all this just to be here on time and this is what I got after everything I suffered.
No appreciation, no acknowledgment, and no apology. I wished I could pour out my mind, but I couldn't. It was as if my tongue was tied or something. Hot tears gathered in my eyes but I didn't want him to see me cry. I stormed out of the room and slammed the door behind me but the stupid door was well-padded and didn't even make the sound I was expecting. With each step I took, the ordeals I suffered to get there replayed in my head, intensifying my pain more.
“Hello, ma'am are you okay?” A small voice came with a soft hand tapping my left shoulder gently. “We spotted you from our camera room in an odd condition, and I came to find out what the problem is.”
I raised my face to see the person. Her uniform told me she was a worker in the Hotel. I wanted to lie, to tell her I was fine but my voice failed. Tears just began to stream down my face with reckless abandon.
“Ma'am, you are crying. Is anything the matter?” She asked, radiating concern in her eyes.
As much as I wanted to share my pain with her, I couldn't. I quickly lifted my dress to show her my bruised knee.
“Oh, I am so sorry, ma'am. Please come with me so your injury can be treated”.
I finally found my voice.
“No, please, I'm fine. I will take care of myself thank you for your concern”. I muttered and stood walking away.
“Very well then please take care of yourself”. She mumbled from behind and I nodded in reply.
I trudged to my room after confirming the room number and walked in. It was when I collapsed on my bed that I realized how tired I was because I was snoring just after a few seconds.
I woke later to a nagging headache and bangs on the door and my phone was beeping at the same time.
After much thinking, I decided to attend to my phone first, then the door, and lastly, my headache. When I glanced at the caller and saw Adrian's name I quickly deduced that he was the one at the door. My gaze quickly diverted to the wall clock and my eyes almost popped out of their socket. What! It was past the time for the event.I rushed to the door to open it, but on second thought, I decided to peep through the door hole first. What I saw scared me to my marrow; Adrian was standing outside sweating profusely and banging on the door in anger; some of the hotel workers were with him, trying to calm him down. I took a step backward in fear, I had never seen Adrian so enraged. The only reason I was able to summon up courage and open the door was because of the workers who were with him outside. At least they would protect me if he tried anything funny.I twisted the door knob clockwise and opened the door hiding behind it. Adrian ran in with the workers immediately, looking around fo
When I saw it was Adrian who made the statement I remained mute. I wanted to tell him that I would love to stay more in the hospital and fully recover but I did not see any use of it. I got used to obeying his orders whether pleasant or not. In no time, the discharge documents were ready, and I signed them and strode out of the hospital with Adrian. We rode in the same car but each of us isolated ourselves to our own thoughts. Soon, rain started drizzling. I manipulated the car window and made it leave a little gap through which the rain would shower on my face. The feeling was so soothing and satisfying. The cold evening breeze was another special therapy for me.When we got to the hotel, Adrian fled to his room, but I was not ready to do the same yet. I quickly ran to the receptionist and asked for the kind lady who was at the hospital with me; after much description, the receptionist finally remembered her and gave me the necessary information I needed.**********Immediately Adria
“Marcus I never knew you were this perverted”. Adrian shrugged with chuckles. “Firstly, I don't just feel right about sleeping with her, and I'm sure she doesn't want it, neither do I. Besides, this whole marriage arrangement is solidly based on business. Secondly, I perceive her to be timid, docile, and reserved. I know she thinks of me as a mean person but I don't care. I can't add taking advantage of her vulnerable state to the list of mean things I have done to her. And thirdly, you know I am a feminist so anything related to abuse of females is highly prohibited by me”. He explained.“Bro, you are truly a genius if, indeed, you haven't tasted her,” Marcus said in one breath.“Everyone knows billionaire Adrian is a genius, a super one at that”. Adrian replied with his voice laced with pride.“So, since you are aware that you are mean to her, why do you keep doing it?”. Marcus asked glaring at him keenly.“Well, that question is actually deep”. Adrian replied, looking away.“But yo
“Hey”. A voice sang after the door was opened.I raised my head and saw Kira. She walked in dressed in our usual hotel working hours uniform. Before I could say anything to her the door flung open.“Why are you not dressed yet?” He asked, his voice reverberating in the room.“I thought we still had about two hours to get there? I stuttered in reply.“Rubbish! Get ready now.” He roared and turned around to leave but stopped abruptly.“And you, what are you doing here?” Adrian asked, looking at Kira.“I am sorry sir. I will be on my way”. She stammered and hurried out of the room.He turned to glare at me coldly, making me quiver.“Who is she?” He asked intently with his eyes still glued on me. “I have observed her around you more often than proper.”“Is it not obvious? She is a worker in this hotel.” I replied.“What was she doing here because her uniform tells that she is in charge of the hallway and not rooms”. Adrian pressed on.“I think she is the one in the best position to answer
Cameras were shuttering here and there, and flashlights kept interrupting my sight. I looked up to Adrian and he wore the most intentional look I had ever seen. We were walking into the meeting hall, hands intertwined like couples walking up the aisle. I felt really nervous plus the crowd from the press and the media around us. They kept stretching their sick microphones to our mouths and asking dumb questions.“Billionaire Adrian, since you got married, you have kept your wife off social media. Could you tell us why?” Another almost poked the cell phone in my mouth “Mrs Jenny Sterling, could you kindly tell us how your marriage experience with Billionaire Adrian is?” The next question was the dumbest question I had ever heard: “Miss Jenny Sterling, rumor has it that billionaire Adrian is good in bed; how true is this?” I almost freaked out. The security men were doing their job but it wasn't enough.“What are you doing?” Adrian whispered at the corner of his lips.“Nothing”. I blurre
I stared at him in bewilderment.“Stop staring at me and eat”. He whispered with gnashed teeth.“You are unbelievable,” I whispered and regretted it immediately because he heard me.“What did you say?” He leaned in again and asked with furrowed brows.“Oh, nothing.” I stammered in reply.“Good.” He muttered and leaned forward to join the meeting again.I heaved a deep sigh, picked up the cutlery, and took a piece of the snack. It had gone cold by then and had lost that hot, crunchy vibe. I continued munching on it and used the wine served along with it to take it down. When I was done with the snack, I sank back into my chair with a filled stomach. After a few minutes of sitting mutely beside Adrian, I observed the meeting room begin to resurrect because it was getting interactive. People were giving their opinions and points of view on different issues and topics. Soon, the menial side talks graduated to heated discussions and blunt exchanges. The board did not withhold anything, pou
The meeting finally came to a wrap. I almost jumped out of my chair in excitement. When I stood up, my limbs went numb for a few seconds and I had to hold on to the table and Adrian's left hand for support. He glared at me, confused, and yanked my hand off. I gulped hard and picked up my bag waiting for him to finish exchanging pleasantries with the board members so we could go home.Out of the blue, the ladies who snubbed me from the commencement of the meeting gathered around me and raised their phone cameras in the air. Selfies were shuttering here and there and I was just trying to make sense of what was going on. Soon, they were making short videos. Some were going live on Instagram, TikTok, and X, saying things like, “Guys, guess who showed up today? Billionaire Adrian's queen and you all know I don't have time for dull moments; we are connecting with her right away.”Maybe I would have had any problem with the whole thing if they were doing it decently and coded but we're just
We stayed in the elevator for about an hour before the lights were finally restored. The elevator started working again, and in no time, we got to our rooms. I thought to ask Adrian about my luggage again, but before I could do so, he disappeared into his room and locked the door. I quietly opened my room door and went inside, when I turned on the lights I saw all my luggage right in front of me.“He really meant it”. I murmured aloud. My hurting back and my swollen feet told me I was not going to unpack anything at that moment. All I needed was a quick shower to loosen up and a good night's sleep. I wished I could get a massage, but it was too let to go to the spa in the hotel as the attendants don't work all around the clock.I woke up the next morning expecting to feel better but I turned out worse than the previous night. My feet, instead of reducing, got more swollen, and my back was a total mess; I couldn't even sit well.“Why the hell am I like this”. I cried making a face.I d
A shrill ring cut through the silent corridor of the hospital-one of William's phones was ringing. He reached for it in a flash and answered the call in a racing heart. The voice on the other side sounded strong and commanding-no room for any doubt or hesitation."Where are you?" Adrian asked, leaving no room for arguing. In an instant, William's heart sank, with his mind racing towards the implication of Adrian's question. He did not ask him which hospital he was in, but where he was; it was as if he knew where he was. The realization sent a shiver down William's spine, and he felt his voice catch in his throat."Ehhhhh." he stammered, faltering.Adrian was explosive in response. "Speak up, my friend!" his voice boomed through the phone."What are you stammering for? Or is my wife dead?" The words hung in the air at once a challenge and a threat. William felt his heart pounding with the struggle to respond; his palms started to perspire."No, sir, no, sir," he said at once, the words
The eyes of Dr. Fredrick shone with urgency, and his whole body was filled with anticipation. Another minute more he could hardly wait for; he was out of patience, began to pace up and down in front of the ward, his hands trembling like that of a thief who had been caught red-handed."Nurse!" he yelled, stamping his foot on the ground as his voice reverberated down the corridors. The echo of this sound in the hospital was like a clarion call-one that could not be ignored. Immediately, the nurse came running to the ward, her face a picture of concern as she hastened to attend to the doctor's summons."What is it, Sir?" she asked breathlessly as she struggled to keep up with the doctor's frantic pace.Doctor Fredrick's eyes flashed into hers, his stare intense as he gave his directions."Get the surgery ready," he said in a low urgent tone."We are about to perform a heart transplant now."The nurse widened her eyes in surprise but wasted no time, hurrying to prepare the operation theat
Adrian's voice came like thunder over the phone, and a cold shiver ran down William's spine as he had never before heard Adrian speak with such urgency and emotion.Adrian was a man known for his tough exterior, his business acumen, and his strict demeanor. Yet, when it came to his wife, Jenny, he was a different person altogether. He had human feelings for her, feelings that he rarely showed to anyone else.William was scared; he heard the running heartbeat of his heart as he listened to Adrian's angry voice. He knew he had to do something quickly to cool off Adrian's anger and get the doctor to attend to Jenny.Immediately, he sprang from his seat and scurried to the doctor's office, his legs moving with swiftness down the hall to try to soothe Adrian's temper. He was now at the doctor's, and Mr. William delicately knocked on the door as his knuckles kissed the wood softly."Come in," a voice called from behind the door in a meek manner. The door cracked, and William slid into the
Adrian paced around his office, the soles of his shoes echoing from the walls-a rhythmic accompaniment to turbulent thoughts. He paced around, looking into the floor as though he was looking for some sort of misplaced treasure. His face furrowed: his brow did show worry and concern. He was tormented by uncertainty over what would next happen, with his mind consumed by the fear of Mr. Shanks' response. The memory of Jenny's collapse in front of Mr. Shanks' investors was fresh within his mind, the shame and embarrassment still burning within him. Adrian boiled in anger and frustration as his mind went to the words of Mr. Shanks:"I don't pay my workers well.”He slammed his hand onto the table. The sound resonated through the room, like the cracking of thunder. Books that lay upon the table tumbled to the floor, their pages fluttering open like wounded birds.Adrian's face twisted in agony and he screamed, his voice a raw and primeval shriek. "No………!" he yelled, his hands tearing at his
"No, sir, please don't go!" Mr. Adrian pleaded as he tried to stop investors from storming out of the company in a fit of anger."Let's talk about this; there must be a way we can resolve our differences.""I don't think so," one of the investors turned and said. "I think you don't pay your manager well, that's why she couldn't even answer our questions.""Why do you say that?" Adrian asked as he tried to defend Jenny."I say that because the lady who slumped looks stressed, that's the reason she slumped," the investor added. "We will send you our response soon," Mr Shank said as he and his core investors left the company. The voices of the investors made Mr. Williams run out from the other office to the conference room to see what was happening. "I! I!" Williams shouted, running to the lifeless body of Jenny, slumped to the floor, her body limp and her face pale."Ahh, no! What's happened to her?" Williams exclaimed, shaking me gently. "Wake up! please wake up!"But I didn't respond
We got into the car and zoomed off to the Adrian company. I was feeling a little bit anxious. Finally, we got to the company, the name of the company welcome us and the beautiful environment was wowMr. Williams, the manager who had been shaking under pressure; quickly handed him all the necessary files. With a great deal of confidence, he showed the people present in the room.I was so confident that Adrian was taken aback, and soon found himself stealing glances at him as he flipped through the pages of the document."Good morning sir," the cleaner said, breaking the spell. "Mr. Jude, our client, is here to see you.""Alright, I'll be there in a minute," Adrian replied, adjusting his clothes. He looked at me and then the other remaining six workers and sighed."I want this client to invest in our company," he said to me."I, please, I would be happy if you make us proud. I know you haven't done this before, but I just believe in you," Mr. Williams said, desperation and hope so thick
No sooner had the words escaped my lips than Helen's eyes had widened in alarm and she let out a loud shout, but I was quick to react. I swiftly clamped my hand over her mouth, my fingers pressing gently against her lips to silence her. "Why are you shouting?" I asked her in a low, urgent voice, looking around the room nervously, fearful that Julian might have heard her cry out.Helen's eyes darted back and forth, her face pale with fear, as she whispered, "He will catch me, ma." Her voice was trembling, and I could feel the depth of her anxiety. I took a deep breath and, as reassuring as possible, my voice calm and soothing, told her, "No, he won't. Just do it, and be unnoticeable," I urged, my eyes locked on hers.Apprehension clouded her gaze; she was terrified that her ruse would be discovered. I knew by now that I really had to get her on my side. My knees nearly grazing the floor, I stepped closer, speaking in a begging, urgent voice:"Please, Helen, I beg of you. I need to kno
And as I sat, lost in my thoughts, came Adrian's soft voice to pierce my fog."Sit, my love." But I didn't utter a word, my mind still wandering to some far-off place, engrossed in the thoughts that had occupied me all day.Adrian's voice came again this time louder, more insistent, "Sit, babe." The sound of his voice was like a summer's breeze-soft and soothing but it was enough to bring me back to reality."Hmm, I breathed in immediately," I said, my voice a little shaky, as I slowly came back to the present."Sorry, I was lost in thought," I apologized, and my eyes found Adrian's concerned face across the table. A look of worry marked his features, and a pang of guilt pinched in my chest as I looked at him for the first time. The scent of the food wafted up to me: savory, full, and growling my stomach with anticipation.Today's dinner was a light, elegant rice flour and chicken soup. What astonished me most was the way it had been presented: freshly arranged with a handful of color
While reassurance on my part was due, it would not go away, and a shadow of skepticism and doubt remained in Adrian's eyes. But I knew I needed to reassure him and he had to believe that I meant to help him."Serious, Adrian," I said, the conviction laced deep in my voice as I reached out and laid my fingers on his shoulders. My fingers came into contact with his skin, and the tension in his body started to dissipate.Adrian's face slowly broke into a smile, crinkles forming around his eyes as he stared at me. But then his face turned curious, his eyebrows arching upwards in a questioning curve."But how will you do it?" he wondered, his voice full of wonder, eyes wide with curiosity. I smiled again, and excitement and anticipation started building up in me."Don't worry, I will do wonders," I said confidently, looking right into Adrian's eyes.He was still in shock, his eyes wide with wonder, trying to digest the fact that I was offering to help him. I decided to change the subject a
