“Who are they?” I asked with furrowed brows.
“They said they are billionaire Adrian's……
“Oh, I get it. Let them in”. I replied, interrupting the poor nurse.
The nurse left my ward, and after a few seconds, the bouncers strode in. There were two, the same ones that brought me to the hospital last night. One of them leaned on the wall opposite my bed while the other strode in my direction.
“How are you feeling today ma'am?” He asked with no atom of emotion in his voice.
I nodded in reply.
“Your husband wants you to be discharged; he said you would receive the rest of the treatment at home.” He announced.
“But I have not fully recovered; why would he give such an order,” I asked at the top of my voice.
“That's the same thing I said ma'am. The doctor will be coming to treat you at home”. He explained.
“No!” I yelled, making the bouncers jerk. “I don't want to go home; I still need this hospital environment to facilitate my recovery.” I shrugged.
Meanwhile, the bouncer who was leaning on the wall opposite my bed did not say a word since he arrived. After I refused to go home, he deep his left hand into his trouser pocket, brought out his mobile phone and went outside.
I knew he was calling Adrian. Tears began to cloud my eyes; I knew it was over. Immediately he dropped that call. I was going home.
The one who I was conversing with all this while also followed suit leaving me alone. I turned around to lie down on my side facing the wall. My phone beeped and I picked it up without checking the caller.
“Hello dear”. The caller sang into the phone and I immediately detected it to be a male's voice.
I removed the phone from my ear and glared at the screen, the phone number was not saved to my contact list.
“Who's this please?” I asked with furrowed brows.
“Oh, dear. You didn't save my phone number?” He replied with another question making me fume.
“You have not answered my question”. I said matter of factly.
“Alright. I am your brother-in-law”. He said in one breath.
“What do you want from me?” I asked, visibly annoyed.
“Hey, calm down. I just want to commiserate with you on your hospitalization”. He replied with a sneer.
“Look here, Julian or whatever you call yourself. Please just leave me alone. I don't want to have anything to do with you. I am concerned about only one person, and that's Adrian; if you want us to relate, then you have to pass through him”.
After that, I ended the call and heaved a sigh of relief. I think I have had enough, I will tell Adrian about him and block his number.
The bouncer came back inside and walked towards me, stretching his right hand in the face with his phone in it. I didn't respond but the caller already voiced out.
“What the hell is wrong with your brains, Jenny”. I jerked and sat up immediately. That could not be Adrian's voice. No, it sounded too dry to be Adrian's voice. I decided to wait and confirm.
“Jenny, I am talking to you”. He roared again.
Yes! I knew it. That wasn't Adrian's voice.
“Samuel”. I whispered. “Samuel!” I screamed again with a flash of happiness in my voice. Of course, I wasn't happy because Samuel called, I was happy because I may finally hear about Mom.
How cruel life can be. This is the same person I have been calling countless times without any reply, and now that his interest is on the line, he called.
“Samuel, since the day I arrived at Adrian's house, I have been calling you, but you refused to pick up my calls”. I said intently.
“Why should I pick up your fucking calls? So you know, I only make business calls. Now listen to me and listen carefully. Adrian wants you off that hospital bed this minute and you know better than proving stubborn. Get out of that place before the press realizes that you're hospitalized”. He ordered, his voice vibrating through the phone's speaker.
I inhaled and exhaled.
“Samuel, please, how is Mum? I have been so worried about her lately”. I asked with a low voice.
“Jenny, did you even hear anything out of what I said earlier? Why are you asking dumb questions?” He asked and I am sure he furrowed his brows.
“I heard all you said; please answer me; how is Mom?” I asked and he ended the call.
Tears trickled down my cheeks making my vision a bit blurry. The bouncer withdrew his hand and put back the phone in his pocket. Thereafter, a doctor and the nurse who had been attending to me walked in with a file in their hands.
“Mrs Adrian”. The doctor called while adjusting his lab coat. “Your discharge documents are ready; please sign them.” He announced, placing the file on my labs and handing me a pen.
I scribbled on the paper and headed out of the hospital. I could feel the peace of mind I was enjoying fade away and my gloomy world began to overshadow me.
Once in the car, the engine was ignited and we were on our way home. I brought down the window and allowed the cold breeze to shower on my face sending shivers down my spine.
The ride seemed shorter than the previous night, and in no time, we were already in front of Adrian's gate.
When I went inside, I intended to rush into my room as fast as possible. But just as I was about to walk across the living room a voice came.
“What was that insolence at the hospital for?”
I stopped abruptly and clenched my fists to my side.
“This will be the last time you will try to flaunt my orders”. He roared, pointing his index finger at me.
“I didn't do anything”.
Adrian's eyes widened in shock, he stood from where he sat and walked towards me. I could feel my heart pounding against my chest as I began developing cold feet. How on earth was I able to talk back to Adrian? How did I do it? As much as I know that he wasn't going to take it lightly with me, I do not regret it.He was close to me by now with his head high above mine. I fixed my gaze on the floor, looking at nothing in particular.“What did you say?” He asked slowly, I could feel his breath showering on my earlobe.“Nothing”. I replied in shutters. “I didn't say anything”.“Are you sure?”. He pressed further.“Yes”. I affirmed.“I thought as much”. He said and walked away.I heaved a loud sigh of relief and strode away silently. When I got to my room, I twisted the door knob clockwise and walked in. The first thing I did was to take off my clothes and walk under the shower. The stench of the hospital was glued to my body, and although I loved it, it had to go.After freshening up, I
“Ma'am, what I meant is that my boss, the owner of this boutique, has granted you free shopping today. This means you can pick as many items as possible without having to pay a dime”. The cashier explained, beaming with a smile.“Who's this boss of yours?” I asked with furrowed brows.“Julian Sterling, your brother-in-law”. She replied.“You know what, I will not be taking any of these items home. It's either you allow me to pay for them or I return them”. I said matter of factly.“No ma'am, please don't do that, you will be putting my job on the line”. The cashier replied with a pitiful voice.I heaved a sigh and stared at the lady intensely. Of course, I wouldn't do anything that would make her lose her job because I understand what it means to make money.Suddenly, as I was racking my brains for the next thing to do, a large crowd started to gather around me. I was scared to my marrow; the boutique securities tried to scare away the crowd, but it didn't work. They kept chanting “Mr
I resolved that I wasn't capable of telling Adrian about Julian yet, so I went ahead to narrate the incident with the crowd, skillfully excluding Julian's ordeal. When I was done, I remained mute, hoping he would just take my word for it and not bombard me with questions. However, he heaved a loud sigh and muttered.“Julian”.I wasn't sure I heard him well and I couldn't help but ask.“What did you say?”He stood up and mumbled, “Never mind”.He walked past me and headed to his room. I wasn't expecting any reply initially so I shoved it aside and went to my room. I tried so much to take my mind off Adrian's issue with Julian, but the more I tried, the more I became interested. Maybe I would have successfully shoved it aside if Julian didn't drag me into the picture.I curled up on my bed as usual hoping sleep would come knocking because it was just a few hours to midnight. I slept off a few minutes later but jumped off my bed and landed on the floor suddenly. I had a dream about Mom a
The driver quickly alighted and beckoned me to come out of the car, I had to bulge, not as if I had a choice. I walked briskly to Adrian's car accompanied by his bouncers and bodyguards. Why exactly didn't he just ask me to use the other cars in his convoy? The backseat door was opened and I sat inside cautiously. I felt Adrian's gaze on me but I tried to avoid looking back at him.“My home is just a stone's throw from here; I can walk down there”. I muttered.“We are heading to the office; enough of this going home nonsense.” He replied firmly.“You can't do this to me. I really need to visit home, it's very important”. I cried.“Driver, move this car!” Adrian ordered ignoring my pleas.I sank back into the car seat frustrated. Why was he just so difficult? My tear glands were alerted and so on tears began trickling down my face. Adrian kept a straight face all through and refused to have a change of heart.Suddenly, our car pulled up again. When I sat up to find out what happened, w
Samuel was standing at the door with a medical attendant by his side. The look on his face told me that I was in trouble.“Why the hell are you doing here?” He asked, shouting at the top of his voice.I stood up abruptly and stammered.“I……. I came to see Mom”.“How dare you?” He yelled again, making me take a step backward.I remained mute as usual. I refused to regret my actions and applauded myself for a job well done.“Get out of here, back to where you came from this minute, and don't ever show yourself stupid self till further notice”.I picked up my bag from the floor, tucked my hair behind my ear, and walked out of the room. Sammie and the medical attendant proceeded into the room and started discussing in low tones, I stopped walking abruptly and came back curious to hear what they were saying.I peeped and saw the medical attendant trying to inject the same yellowish substance into Mom's drip bag. I don't know why something inside of me was feeling suspicious about it but I
I had my drawing pad clutched up against my chest, its corners digging into my ribs, as I shouldered my bag of art supplies. The house was too quiet. My bedroom door creaked softly when I opened it, and I hesitated, holding my breath. When no one stirred, I exhaled and slipped out, stepping carefully down the big staircase. My socked feet were silent, but every creak of the old wooden railing was very loud in the quiet. And then I got down there, and I heard his voice—deep, firm, and familiar. Samuel. My stepfather."I don't want to hear excuses. Just finish it," he bellowed. His voice carried from the dining room, off the walls. I peeked around the corner at him, phone to his ear as he paced back and forth. His suit was perfect, just the light from the chandelier gleaming off his cufflinks. He looked very irritated.I was hoping he wouldn't notice me; I grabbed my bag and tried to make a run for the kitchen, but just like always, I was out of luck. My bag hit the corner of one of the
Adrian shut the heavy oak door to his office with a bang; the sound reverberated in the room. He frowned more as he ran a hand through his thick black hair, still thinking about the meeting he had just left. His jaw was tense as he walked to his desk, the heels of his shiny shoes clicking sharply on the floor."Adrian," a familiar voice said, bringing him out of his reverie. His grandmother's attorney, Tiller, stood by the window, his dark suit impeccable. Beside him, Marcus, Adrian's best friend and COO, leaned back casually against the armrest of one of the soft chairs, looking careful."What is it now, Tiller?" Adrian asked sharply as he sat down in his chair. His fingers began drumming on the wooden desk, evidence that he was impatient. "I thought we wrapped up my grandmother's estate months ago."Tiller, adjusting his glasses, stepped closer, carrying a nice leather briefcase. "Ordinarily, we would be, but something has risen that requires your prompt attention."Adrian raised an
This room was my safe haven, the only sanctuary in this big house where I found even a shred of peace. I sat cross-legged on the floor beside Mom's bed, moving chess pieces across the board I'd set up on the small table. Playing against myself wasn't as dull as it sounded-it just gave me something to focus on besides the quiet beeping of machines that kept my mother alive.Soft music flowed from the speaker; Sinatra's voice filled the dead air, low and smooth in his croon. The sound of my voice came as a whisper: "Fly me to the moon, let me play among the stars…"I looked at Mom, very still, pale, and serene in her features. "You always loved this song," I whispered, as if she were listening. "Remember? You used to hum it as you cooked breakfast."There was no answer. Never would there be an answer. Still, I continued talking, as if she may just respond. That way, it wasn't so hard to accept her silence.I moved another chess piece, then sat back, looking at the board. "I think white'

“Interesting”. Adrian replied with a smirk. “So if you knew you were able to use your damn legs after all, why did you write me a note?”I didn't know what to say so I remained silent.“Answer me!” He yelled at once, making shivers run down my spine.I just stood there mute and visibly shaken.“I think I know why”. He said, touching his jaw. “Because I consented to your fucking request with a note, that gave you the guts to do the same”.Now I realized this man was very insane. Why would he have any problem with me writing him a note?“I'm sorry if you're offended. But I need a response”. I replied slowly with my head bowed.“What exactly do you want”. He said, rolling his eyes as if he didn't get the message from the note.“I need some money to change my wardrobe”. I replied.I hated the fact that I was standing in front of a man asking for money. It was a bruise to my ego, never had I imagined that life would maltreat me to the point of relying on a man for my upkeep.“How much do y
If this information was correct, then it means the caller was Adrian's relative because of the “Sterling” surname. The person called the second time and I picked up.“Hello dear”. His voice came soft and welcoming.“Hello”. I managed to reply in stammers.“You are Genny right?” He asked, making me nervous.“Who are you please?” I asked, trying to clear my doubt. Since I got married to Adrian, no family member has come to visit, and Adrian never introduced me to any. How did he get my contact?“Please answer my question; you are Adrian's wife, right?” He pressed.“Yes”. I muttered.“And your name is Jenny right?” he asked again, stressing the “Jenny” word.“Yes, I am”. I replied visibly annoyed.“It's nice meeting you…….“Please who are you?” I asked with furrowed brows, interrupting him.“I am Julian Sterling by name, Adrian's cousin”. He explained.“Okay. How can I help you please?” I asked, trying to define the purpose of the call.“No dear, I'm the one who wants to help you”. He re
“What the fuck”. I yelled and quickly scolded myself because it was past midnight.Adrian watches blue films! Why would he do such a thing? It dawned on me that he lacked morals because that's the only explainable reason why a successful man like him was patronizing a blue film channel.I turned off my internet connection and covered myself with the duvet. I think I have had enough; sleep had better arrive fast. The next morning, I woke up to a deafening knock on the door. I dragged myself out of the bed lazily cursing the knocker under my breath. “Screw whoever was disturbing my precious morning sleep”.I opened the door to find the maid I had a conversation with last night standing before me. She looked offended and reserved.“Good morning, ma'am”. She mumbled, feigning a smile; I could tell it was fake.“Come in”. I reply warmly ignoring her greetings and beckoning to her to walk inside my room. She hesitated but when I gave her a persistent look, she obliged. I led her to a comfor
