After explaining and coming clean to the detective, I felt much lighter. It felt strangely good to be telling the truth, and not just half of it, but the whole thing. “That’s all?” She asked as she lifted her attention from what she just wrote in her notepad. I nodded, and then mumbled, “Yea, I guess so.”“I don’t want any guessing. Is that everything? I want the whole truth.” “Yes. Yes, that is everything.” I pressed my lips into a line. I was still very nervous but as I said, I felt lighter. I was not choked by my nerves anymore, I just had a pinch of them clinging to me. “What is going to happen to me?”She smiled lopsidedly and placed the notepad down. “All this would have been dissolved and dealt with without any serious repercussions if you and the kid would have come forward the moment it all happened.”“Didn’t you hear me? We were scared.” “Yeah, but the thing that you two were scared of has now happened. You two just got caught and might be on your way to prison. The kid
After twenty-four hours had passed, Liam and I were taken into an interrogation room together. We were handcuffed and all our belongings were taken away from us. Detective Stone sat across from us with a tight frown on her face. The room was square and had a high ceiling. I think there was a heater in here because the air was a bit warm. There was no window so I could not tell whether it was snowing out or not. But my guess was that it was. I was getting a bit tired of smelling the detective’s perfume. I was exhausted and did not have a good night's sleep. I just wanted to go home. She told us that we were going to be allowed to see our family and friends, but that had not been the case. I have not seen or talked to anyone other than her and a few guards since I was brought here. “It has been twenty-four hours.” Detective Stone began. “The deal that was on the table has now expired.” She stared intently at me. “And now you two are going to be transferred to a federal prison not f
Confusion replaced the scent of detective Stone’s perfume and filled the room. “I did it. I did it, detective.” Alex spoke with confidence. There was not a hint of nervousness in him. “Dad, uh, what are you doing?” Liam asked as he ran his eyes over his father. “Mr, Harding, do you fully understand what you are confessing to?” Detective Stone asked. She looked annoyed. I’m sure she was tired of the case dragging on and on and just wanted to close it already. “Yes. Yes, I fully understand,” He replied.“He didn’t do anything.” I joined the conversation. “Listen. I don't know what the hell is going on here, but I have a car waiting out there for the purpose of taking a prisoner or two to prison.” She stood up and straightened her clothes. “Now, I am going to step out and give you all the time you need to get your stories right. But when I come back, I am taking someone out to that car.” We watched her walk out of the room, leaving us alone. “Dad, what the hell are you doing?” Liam
When I reached the guest room, I knocked on the door a few times but no answer came. I proceeded to knock again but I was met with the same result: no answer. So I decided to open the door. “I’m coming in! Please don’t be naked!” I said in a mildly loud voice as I turned the cold knob of the door. When I swung it open, I was met with an empty room. “Liam?” I called out his name as I walked in. I continued to call out his name as I searched the room and then the bathroom for him, but found no luck. He was not there. But where could he be? I saw him get down from the car when Ashton drove us into the compound. I sighed lowly and pulled my phone out of my pocket. The facial recognition on the device scanned my face and the phone unlocked. I then dialed Liam’s number and it rang for the longest without him picking up. With worry filling me up slowly, I headed out of the room and walked back downstairs. I ran into Julia on my way out of the house. “Are you okay? Where are you head
The detective blinked rapidly for a few seconds and then cleared her throat before speaking. “Excuse me? I don’t think I heard you clearly.” “I said that Alex is innocent and he shouldn’t be in prison, I should.”“And you think I don’t know that? I’m a goddamn detective for crying out loud. I know that Alex Harding is innocent.”“Then why did you send him to prison?” She scoffed lightly. “I didn’t send him to prison, he did that all by himself when he confessed to a crime he had nothing to do with.” I adjusted my weight on the couch and got closer to the detective. “Which is why I’m coming forward now. I want him out.” She stood to her feet and began to laugh. Not just a chuckle, but full-on laughing. “You really think that we’re playing a game here, do you?” She continued to laugh, and I felt slightly annoyed. “I didn’t say that we were. I’m here so we can put an innocent man out of prison.” She paced the room slowly and her laughter finally died down. Then she stopped right ne
I walked into the room tentatively as my heartbeat doubled its pace. When I was in, I closed the door and stared at the man on the hospital bed. He looked the same as the day I saw him bleeding out on the ground after we hit him. But this time, his eyes were not closed, but open. “Hi, I’m detective Stone. You requested to see me?” She asked him as she sat in the chair next to the bed. “Uh, yeah.” The voice of the man was faint. He looked like he was doing okay. He was wearing a hospital gown and had a neck brace on his neck. He had a few scrapes on his face and had IV lines connected to the veins in his hand. “You’re the one, huh?” “Yes, sir, I am.” She was formal. She glanced at me and then furrowed her brows. “Lara, would you please come and sit down?” I forced a smile and walked to the chair next to her and sat down. The man kept staring at me so I introduced myself. “Hi, I’m Lara Zane Meyer. I’m the queen of the Werewolf Territory.”The man scoffed lightly. “Yeah, I know you.
Christmas day was getting closer and closer. The holiday spirit was in the air. All the houses had decorations and people were now wearing warmer clothes. It was now four days till Christmas and for once since Liam and I hit Harper’s uncle, I felt complete peace. I was not worried about being caught or saying the wrong thing that could land me back in prison. I was not looking over my shoulder, or contemplating how to save me and Liam’s a**es. I felt free. I could finally completely relax. The case was in the good hands of the detective’s wife, Iris, and she was doing her best to give us the result that we all wanted. I heard from them this morning and they said that things were falling into place; that Alex would be free and the case would be dropped by the eve of Christmas. Music played in my ears as I jogged. The sun was setting and the orange glow in the sky was beautiful. If I was not jogging, I would have stopped to take a picture of it. The sky looked so perfect. It loo
It was like all sound faded for a few seconds as I stood with the colorless phone in my hand. My heartbeat was loud; louder than possible. My wolf whined due to the overwhelming wave of shock, disbelief, and pain that I felt. “No.” My voice was breathy and broke a bit. Zayn was standing next to me and from the pale look on his face, I could tell that he had heard what the detective had said about Alex. He tried to touch me as a way to comfort me but I flinched away. I did not want to be comforted. I wanted Alex to be alright. I wanted Liam to have his dad for Christmas. I did not want Liam to be an orphan. Alex was now like family, I did not want to lose him. “Hello? Lara, are you still on the phone?” I heard the detective. “Hello?”“Yeah,” I replied numbly, and then swallowed. “Is—is Alex okay? Is he alive?” I choked the words out. I waited with bated breath for a reply from her. I felt that fluttery nervous stomach feeling and my palms were already sweaty. It was like anxiety an
“Come on, guys. You have Lara and me out here waiting like kids waiting to open up gifts on Christmas morning!” Zayn exclaimed, causing everyone to laugh. The door suddenly opened by itself and my eyes widened mildly. “Did that door just open by itself?” I took a step back, and Ashton and Zoe were amused by my reaction. The door opened wider and a golden retriever jumped out of the car, almost giving me a heart attack. “Gosh!” I exclaimed as I held Zayn’s arm tightly. “I’m not going to lie, I was a bit startled when that dog came out.” Zayn laughed lightly. “So that’s the surprise, huh? A doggie.” Zayn bend down and played with the dog. I had a small fear of dogs. One bit me when I was a kid and since then I have been terrified of them. No matter how cute and cuddly they were, I stayed my distance away from them. The golden retriever kept licking and jumping on Zayn like it had known him for years. “The doggie is a surprise but not for you guys, he’s for the kids.” Ashton
It was Christmas day, the 25th of December. Werewolves were howling in celebration even though it was the sun that was up. Carols were being played and families were together. The air was warm, the sky was crystal blue, and the day was perfect. Where did the Werewolf Territory take the concept of Christmas when we believed in the Moon goddess? We adopted it thousands of years ago when humans once lived amongst us. They celebrated our holidays and so we did the same, as a show of respect. That was when the word Christmas entered the vocabulary of the Werewolf Territory. And since then, we have celebrated the day and passed on the tradition from generation to generation. The Christmas tree in the living room was lit up and gifts were scattered under it. All the kids were up and sat eagerly next to their presents, waiting for us to give them the go-ahead to start opening up them. The air was filled with anticipation and joy. A hot cup of chocolate sat in my hand and Zayn was drinki
My claws immediately sprang forth from underneath my fingernails, and a growl escaped my mouth. “What the hell are you doing here? You should be in prison.” I was on the verge of wolfing out. It was not like I felt threatened by Jacob, but I did not like the fact that he was in our mansion without us even knowing. The kids were literally right across the hall from there. “Please. Please calm down and let me explain,” He begged. He placed the box of chocolate on the kitchen island and took a step toward us.“Not another step, buddy. I won’t hesitate to rip you to pieces.” Zayn threatened him, and he gulped as he nodded. My wolf had not gotten any real action for a while and it was yearning for some. I usually trained in the training room with Zoe and the others almost every Saturday though my wolf wanted more. “Start explaining.” I breathed out a short sigh as I continued to keep my wolf at bay.“Okay. Okay. But first, promise not to kick me out, please?” His eyes were pleading. I
‘You can’t save me, she-wolf.’ The words echoed in my head as I stared into Alex’s sad eyes. He looked convinced that he was beyond saving and that seemed to scare me a bit. He was too sure.“But at least let me try,” I begged him. He scoffed. “What are you even going to do? Bring my wife back?” He rose to his feet. “For now, Lara, just let me try to figure out the journey I’m on emotionally. I will go back to my pack…eventually.” “Okay.” I did not push him. And he did have a point. What was I going to do to save him? I was not a superhero. I did not have special powers. I was just a she-wolf that cared deeply for people. And apparently, that was called a hero mentality; wanting to help everyone to the point where sometimes I didn’t even regard myself. Alex may have said it while he was lashing out but I think he was right: He had been a leader way longer than I had. I may have been queen but that was just a nice coating, deep inside, I was still an omega. “It’s kind of late, I th

A few seconds of silence filled the home theatre because the cartoon could not play forever, obviously. The projector was now off and the fancy inbuild lights on the ceiling were on. Alex sat next to me and played with his fingers nervously. He looked slightly uncomfortable but a look of determination also could be seen on his face. “For starters, I have two questions.” I began, and he turned his full attention to me. “Shoot.”“First one is what you mean when you said that I have earned the right or privilege to ask you about anything?” I raised one of my eyebrows. He smiled weakly. “Lara, you have become family. You have proven to me that you can be trusted and that you are willing to go through hell to protect my son. Do we have to do the whole ‘I am a blessing’ stuff over again?” He chuckled, and I could not help but laugh lightly. “No, thank you,” I refused as I continued to laugh. “That is why I came back here after I lashed out at you. You did not deserve that; you have be
I sat down next to Alex and the smell of his cologne filled my nose. It was a strong scent but I really liked it though. The black-and-white cartoon playing on the projector was aesthetically pleasing. It reminded me of the past. Not just any past, or mine. But like the 1960s. Weird because I was not even alive at that time but that was the vibe I got from looking at Mickey Mouse doing funny dances while in black-and-white color. “You said you wanted to talk?” Alex smiled weakly as intrigue smeared his facial features. He was wearing a hoodie that looked great on him. If we were not about to talk about serious matters, I would have asked him where he got it. “Yeah, but you go first. What do you want to talk about?” I adjusted myself in my seat and made myself comfortable enough. My attention was trained on him as I awaited him to speak. “You sure?” “Yeah, go ahead.” I encouraged him. I was curious as to what he wanted to talk to me about. But I already knew what I wanted to talk
I crossed my legs and watched Gene and Zayn sip lemonade from the glasses that were brought by the male helper. I was very invested in Gene’s backstory. I wanted to know more. “You have not touched your lemonade, dear,” Gene pointed out and we both glanced at the tall glass that was filled with the yellowy-sugary drink. “Her teeth hurt when she drinks lemonade,” Zayn explained politely, and I smiled involuntarily. He placed his hand over mine on the couch and a warm feeling filled my chest. “Sorry,” I mouthed to Gene but she brushed me off lightly. “Oh, that’s alright. You should have told me.” She crossed her legs too. “Would you like me to send for water?” “No, it’s okay. Don’t trouble yourself.” I played with the tips of my hair. “You said that the Silver Moon pack has unspoken laws?” “Uh, yeah. Laws that have been passed down from generation to generation. It’s not written and posted somewhere but it’s in the hearts of all the inhabitants of Rocky. I learned about those laws
Smiles. Laughter. Joy. A lightness filled the air as Alex got out of the detective’s car. Snow fell from the sky and soon made white patches on his hair. His face was flushed and he had a smile so bright, that it could light up a dark night. The light humming of the car lingered in the air, and detective Stone and her wife got out of the car seconds later with cheerful looks on their faces. Bunny and the others joined us outside and Liam was out of words when his eyes landed on his dad. He glanced at me and his lips parted in disbelief. “Thank you,” He mouthed, and then turned his attention back to Alex. Liam watched his dad approach him and his eyes became glossy as they threatened to spill tears. He kept clenching and unclenching his jaw, and I could tell that he was trying his best to stop himself from crying. When Alex closed the distance between him and his son, they hugged each other tightly, and the scene made me teary. Zayn wrapped his right arm around my torso and pulled
