After twenty-four hours had passed, Liam and I were taken into an interrogation room together. We were handcuffed and all our belongings were taken away from us. Detective Stone sat across from us with a tight frown on her face. The room was square and had a high ceiling. I think there was a heater in here because the air was a bit warm. There was no window so I could not tell whether it was snowing out or not. But my guess was that it was. I was getting a bit tired of smelling the detective’s perfume. Confusion replaced the scent of detective Stone’s perfume and filled the room. “I did it. I did it, detective.” Alex spoke with confidence. There was not a hint of nervousness in him. “Dad, uh, what are you doing?” Liam asked as he ran his eyes over his father. “Mr, Harding, do you fully understand what you are confessing to?” Detective Stone asked. When I reached the guest room, I knocked on the door a few times but no answer came. I proceeded to knock again but I was met with the same result: no answer. I continued to call out his name as I searched the room and then the bathroom for him, but found no luck. He was not there. But where could he be? I walked into the room tentatively as my heartbeat doubled its pace. When I was in, I closed the door and stared at the man on the hospital bed. He looked the same as the day I saw him bleeding out on the ground after we hit him. But this time, his eyes were not closed, but open. “Hi, I’m detective Stone. You requested to see me?” She asked him as she sat in the chair next to the bed. “Uh, yeah.” The voice of the man was faint. He looked like he was doing okay. Christmas day was getting closer and closer. The holiday spirit was in the air. All the houses had decorations and people were now wearing warmer clothes. It was now four days till Christmas and for once since Liam and I hit Harper’s uncle, I felt complete peace. I was not worried about being caught or saying the wrong thing that could land me back in prison. I was not looking over my shoulder, or contemplating how to save me and Liam’s a**es. I felt free. I could finally completely relax. The case was in the good hands of the detective’s wife, Iris, and she was doing her best to give us the result that we all wanted.
