7 - Anchored Hearts

Mel, Era, and I are on our way to the airport, where our private plane awaits, ready to take us to Germany. That's where Urania, our newly-built cruise ship, is located. Today is the big day—the inspection. If everything goes well, we will move her to Amsterdam and later to Singapore to serve the Asia-Far east countries.

As our car speeds toward the airport, I glance out the window, the cityscape blurring past. The anticipation of the trip fills the air, a mix of excitement and nerves. Mel and Era are discussing last-minute details, ensuring every aspect of the inspection is covered.

"Do you think everything will go smoothly?" Era asks, her voice tinged with concern.

"I believe so," I reply confidently, pero may parte parin saakin na kinakahaban, pero hindi ko na iyon pinahalata sa kanila.

It's actually my first project after taking the position as CEO. I've worked hard for eight years to fully accomplish our last ship, which is part of the Nine Muses.

I've been hands-on on it since day one.

"We've done everything we can to prepare. Now we just need to see it through."

When we arrive at the airport, our sleek private plane stands ready on the tarmac. We disembark from the car, and a crew member greets us warmly, helping with our bags. The plane's interior is luxurious, with plush seats and ample space to relax during the flight.

Once we're settled in, the engines roar to life, and soon we're airborne. The flight to Germany is filled with discussions and strategizing. We go over the inspection checklist repeatedly, ensuring no detail is overlooked.

Hours later, we land in Germany. The anticipation grows as we drive to the site where Urania is docked. The facility is impressive and a testament to modern engineering and design.

"My babies!"

We turned simultaneously towards the source of the melodious voice, only to see Mom and Dad approaching us with grace and elegance. Their presence exuded power—an intimidating aura that commanded respect from everyone in their path.

Mom, with her poised demeanor and commanding gaze, led the way, followed closely by Dad, whose confident stride matched hers perfectly. They walked as if they owned the space around them, their every movement was a testament to years of experience and leadership.

"Mom, dad," I greeted them both. Kaagad naman kaming nag-mano kay mommy. A tradition that still lives in us. In Cebu, particularly my mom's hometown.

"It's wonderful to see you," Dad said with a smile, his voice deep and resonant.

Mom hugged me tightly, her embrace filled with warmth and love. She also hugged Era and Mel. Dad just nodded at us. He's not a fan of physical touch, well, only to mom, because our mom is clingy as hell.

"Were here to see the inspection," Dad added, nodding towards the ship in the distance. "Congratulations, Calliope. You've done us proud."

Napangiti naman ako sa sinabi ni Daddy. Their approval meant the world to me, and I was grateful to share this moment with them. Mel and Era exchanged smiles, clearly moved by the heartfelt reunion.

"Hoy! Hindi pwedeng wala kami!"

We turned to look behind Mom and Dad and saw them: Kleio, second daughter, known for her intelligence and wit, she's a famous writer and established her own company; Euterpe, the fourth daughter, passionate about music and creativity so, she became an Idol; Thalia, Melpomene's twin sister and the sixth daughter, known for her charm and grace, now a famous fashion designer; Polyhymnia, seventh daughter, is a ballet dancer currently graduated from college and starting her training with dad; Terpsichore, the eighth daughter, known for her love of dance and movement, currently pursuing her studies in Psychology; and finally, Urania, our youngest and the star of today's event, currently pursuing her studies in astronomy.

Mom and Dad looked on proudly as we all gathered together, a united front ready to celebrate Urania's success. It was a moment of pride and happiness, knowing that our family's dedication and hard work had led us to this point.

As we stood together, I felt a deep sense of love and appreciation for each member of our family. We had faced challenges and triumphs together, and today was a testament to our strength and unity.

We board the ship, and our first stop is the main lobby. The space is grand, with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and plush seating areas. The decor is a blend of modern elegance and classic sophistication, setting the tone for what guests can expect throughout their journey.

The ship bears our company logo proudly, with the name "Urania" painted in large, cursive letters on both sides. Its elegance is immediately apparent from the outside, hinting at the luxury within. Urania boasts 18 decks, each offering a unique array of facilities and amenities.

As we approach the ship, I can't help but marvel at its sheer size and the meticulous attention to detail. The exterior gleams under the sunlight, a testament to the craftsmanship and hard work that went into its construction.

"Look at her," Mel says, awe evident in his voice. "She's magnificent."

"Indeed," I reply, feeling a surge of pride. "Let's go see what she has to offer."

We take an elevator to explore the different decks. Each level is a marvel in itself, presenting a variety of experiences.

Decks one to three— house the crew quarters and essential operations rooms, ensuring the smooth running of the ship.

Deck four—home to a luxurious spa and wellness center, complete with saunas, steam rooms, and treatment suites.

Deck seventeen—the pool deck, featuring multiple swimming pools, hot tubs, and a poolside bar.

Deck eighteen—the exclusive VIP deck—offers private lounges, a sun deck, and premium services for our most discerning guests.

Urania is our biggest cruise ship and has 18 decks. Most of our previous ships were limited to 13 to 16 decks.

Each deck is thoughtfully designed to provide a unique experience, ensuring that every passenger finds something to enjoy. As we make our way through the ship, I'm continuously impressed by the level of detail and the variety of amenities available.

We reach the top deck, where we take a moment to look out at the horizon. The view is stunning, the endless expanse of the ocean stretching out before us.

"Well done, my princesses." Dad commented with a big and sweet smile.

"So, let's meet the crew." Era said with a big smile on her face. Actually, meeting the crew is not in our plans today, kaya labis ang pagtataka ko.

But my family followed her, and as we reached the lobby again, we saw few people. Mga head lang ng barkong ito, pero nagulat ako nang makita ko si Thaddeus at the back, wearing on his casual attire, yet his posture and demeanor are different.

"And lastly, the captain of this ship is none other than, Capt. Thaddeus Dela Vera." Pakilala ni Era.

Kaagad akong napatingin sa kanya, but she's diverting her gaze! Paanong hindi ko alam ang tungkol dito?!

"Muling ibalik ang tamis ng pag-ibig~" Thena sang quietly beside me. I glared at her, but she let out a soft and elegant chuckle.

"Terpsichore, Athena. Shut your mouth, or baka gusto mong itapon kita sa dagat." Nanggigilaiti kong sabi sa kanya. She zips her mouth, kaya napatingin ulit ako sa harapan.

Dad is talking to Thaddeus, and they're talking so seriously.

"Oh geez, Cali! Stop being pakipot ha! Landiin mo na kasi ulit!" Pangangasar ni Poly.

"Binibisita 'yan ni Thad sa office niya every day." Sumbong ni Mel sa mga kapatid namin. Ali or Euterpe Aaliyah gasped together with Lia or Thalia Alyson. Poly, Thena and Urania just chuckled while Kleio grinned at me.

"'Yun naman oh, may magbabalikan." Pangangasar ni Lia at tinutusok pa ako sa tagiliran ko.

"My gosh, I didn't expect Thaddeus to be successful now." Ali remarked with a mix of admiration and jest. "Mas successful pa ata kesa saakin!"

"I heard he invested in our company. How much?" Polyhymnia inquired; her curiosity unabated.

"Hundred million pesos." Sagot ni Era, since she's the Chief Operating Officer, alam niya ang mga bagay-bagay tungkol sa company namin.

"Really?! That much?! Where did he get money for that?!" Ali exclaimed, her surprise echoing our shared sentiment.

I sighed lightly, rolling my eyes at their playful banter, ready to step away from the conversation. However, Era's next words caught me off guard and held me in place.

"He works hard. By the age of 23, he earned his position as a first mate, and by 25, he was promoted to ship's captain."

Napataas ang kilay ko sa narinig ko. I... I was too stunned.

"Did he... really become a captain at such a young age? I'm so... proud of him." I murmured softly; my thoughts consumed by Thaddeus's remarkable achievement. "He always dreamed big, aiming to be the youngest captain in the world. And now he's achieved it... He must be very happy, realizing his dreams."

"Your breakup led you both to success, Cali," Kleio finally spoke up, her voice carrying a mix of insight and empathy.

Her words caught me off guard, causing me to pause and reflect on the journey that had brought us here. It was true—Thaddeus and I had faced challenges and hardships, including our breakup, but through it all, we had grown individually and as a couple. Our paths had diverged and then converged again, each experience shaping us and propelling us forward.

"Yes, sometimes things happen for a reason," Polyhymnia added thoughtfully. "It's amazing how life unfolds."

I nodded slowly, absorbing their words. The breakup had been painful, but it had also been a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. It had pushed us to reevaluate our priorities and pursue our aspirations with renewed determination.

"Thaddeus's success is a testament to his resilience and determination," Era remarked, her voice filled with admiration. "He never gave up on his dreams."

I'm on the sun deck while everyone is celebrating the successful inspection of our newly built ship. Tomorrow, we'll be taking our baby to Amsterdam for another event.

The cold breeze brushes against my skin. I close my eyes and feel the chilly air enveloping me, sensing something gently resting on my shoulders.

He smiled gently as he saw me staring at him.

"It's cold out here, Cali. Why are you alone?" Thaddeus's voice breaks through the quiet, and I turn to see him leaning against the railings beside me, his gaze fixed on the horizon.

"I just needed a moment," I reply softly, leaning into his warmth as he stands beside me.

The silence enveloped us, and no one dared to speak. Ayos narin iyon. Para makapag isip-isip ako tungkol saamin. If I give him a chance or... Not.

I remember Mel's question. What's stopping me? I'm afraid to get hurt by the same person again. And I can't risk my heart again for another heart break.

"Congrats nga pala," he greeted.

Congrats. You... You became the youngest captain. You... Achieved your dreams..." I said in a low voice. Pero tingin ko narinig niya dahil mas lumawak ang ngiti niya, but his eyes tells otherwise. It's full of sadness and pain.

His voice tinged with sadness and pain.

I'm neither dumb nor stupid enough to get what he was saying.

It means me. I'm his world. He achieved it without me by his side. I'm not there for him during his hardships, his sufferings, or the days of celebrating his victories in life. I wasn't there for him. But he continued to live, followed his dreams, and now he's one of the most successful men in the world. He made his own name and earned his own money. Earning a title as the youngest captain in the whole world.

"I'm proud of you, Thaddeus." I sincerely said to him. Nabigla siya at napatingin saakin. Shock is evident on his face, but he eventually smiles. A faint smile.

"But I'm not your world, Thaddeus. Your world belongs to you. You're the captain of your own, Thad. You achieved everything without me. And you will be in the present and in the future."

"No, no, Cali, don't say that," he said, almost crying. He held my hands and kissed them non-stop as I felt his tears drop on my skin.

Napaangat ako ng tingin sa kalangitan to stop myself from crying too.

"Please, don't do this to me, Cali." his voice cracked. I bite my lips.

"I need you. You are my world, Cali. You are my dream. Please, don't push me away. Not now that I achieved my dreams, let me... Let me achieve you, please?"

But my eyes are such a traitor. A tear fell down my cheeks.

"Cali, I never reached this point without you. You are my inspiration in every step I take, Cali. Mahirap, oo. Pero hindi ako sumuko dahil gusto ko maging proud ka saakin. Dahil gusto ko sa muling pagkikita natin, may mukhang maihaharap ako sa'yo. Na may ipagmamalaki ako sa pamilya mo." He kissed the back of my palm and gently caress it to his face.

"Binawi saamin ang lupa namin, dahilan para atakehin si mama sa puso at namatay. Sobrang hirap, Cali kasi akala ko nang mga panahong iyon karamay kita. But you left me. I was hoping a comfort from you, but you didn't come back. I hated you, for leaving me. Kasi akala ko mahal mo ako?" Binitawan niya ang kamay ko at napasandal sa likod ng sofa na nasa gilid lang namin.

"But then it was entirely my fault. You caught me kissing Lila? I wasn't kissing her, Cali. Napuling siya at sadyang nandoon ako ng panahong iyon. I was only helping her. She's your friend at hindi ko naman pwedeng hayaan nalang siya ng gabing iyon." Natawa siya at yumuko. "Pero nagulat nalang ako nang makita kang naglalakad palayo saakin. That time, feel ko ang layo-layo mo. Ang hirap mong abutin. Doon ako nakaramdam ng kaba dahil baka mawala ka saakin dahil sa nakita mo." He wiped his tears but his tears can't stop from falling.

Nakakap*tangina. Kasi kasalanan ko lahat ng ito. If... If only I listen to him. This wouldn't be happening. Maybe masaya sana kaming dalawa at may pamilya na.

"I tried to chase you, Cali but I got into an accident. I... I almost died. But I fought because I don't want to die without explaining to you what happened there. I lost consciousness for three days.

His eyes are full of emotions I cannot distinguish.

"Namatay si mama, kinuha saakin ang bahay namin. I lived on the streets until Eros helped me. He lend me his condo, and I worked hard with them until I finished my college. I worked hard to reach this point, Cali." He's eyes were so tired but still pleading.

"You became my inspiration, Cali.

And now I'm trying, Cali. And now we're back from being friends again, itataboy mo ulit ako? Napakasakit mo naman, Cali. Ang hirap mo namang mahalin."

His words hit me like a punch to the gut, and I couldn't hold back the sobs that erupted from deep within me. The pain and longing in his voice were unbearable.

"Right. I was hard to love, yet why, Thad?" My voice almost broke. "Why do you keep getting close to me? Why do you keep pushing yourself toward me when you know I'll just push you away? Why?" I asked him, my emotions overwhelming me.

He stood up and walked towards me, his face wet with tears, just like mine. He gently held my hands, and he looked at me intensely.

"Because no matter how hard I try to forget you, I just can't, Cali. My heart's anchored to your heart. And no matter how far my ship travels, it will always come back to its home. To your heart, Calliope Anna."
