Chapter 8 Alpha Lir POV We arrived at Downbridge gate, and their guards were stiff enough not to bow and that was the first thing that grated on my nerves. At Silvercrest, the gates parted like the Red Sea when my motorcade approached. Here, two guards in a dark heavy combat suit made from a strange, dull-looking fabric stepped into the road and forced my driver to roll down the window. “Identification,” the guard said in a flat voice. He didn’t care about the Silvercrest symbol on the hood.

His face was carved from granite. Far ahead, at the base of the black spires, a pillar of red light shot into the sky, piercing the clouds. The air pressure dropped so fast my ears popped. A sound followed—a low, mechanical grinding that sounded like a massive stone door being forced open. The Gate was waking up early. I looked down at my palm. The crescent-and-star was burning so hot it singed my skin. "It knows we're here," I said, my voice steady despite the cold terror spiking in my chest.

As the echoes faded, the silver veins in the earth began to pulse faster, spreading outward like wildfire toward the Gate. The wind screamed through the gorge as Kaelen crested the ridge. The world below no longer looked like the valley he’d sworn to protect. The ground pulsed with veins of light, rivers of silver snaking between shattered stones. The air shimmered like molten glass, bending and breaking the rain into prisms. And at the center of it all stood the Gate—a colossal arch of fractured crystal half-buried in the mountain. Its surface rippled like water, reflecting skies that didn’t belong to this world.

But this wasn’t the kind of visit she wanted anyone else to witness. As the towering iron gates of an old, industrial-looking street loomed ahead, she slowed to a stop. A hulking man stepped out of a hidden booth, his body brimming with muscle and menace. His face was expressionless, but his sharp eyes bore into hers as he leaned down to peer through the window. Before Matilda could say a word, he stepped back and pressed a button on a small device. The gates groaned open, revealing a sprawling compound that looked like a blend of a high-tech laboratory and a fortress.

Chapter 10: Echoes of Destruction The rusted iron gates of the obsidian citadel loomed before them, a gaping maw in the desolate crimson landscape. Behind them, the monstrous creatures howled in frustration, their metallic claws scraping against the barren rock. Evie and Liam, hearts pounding in their chests, sprinted towards the gate, desperate for any semblance of refuge. With a resounding clang, the gate swung open, revealing a dark, cavernous entrance. Without hesitation, they plunged into the cool, stale air that emanated from within. The heavy gate slammed shut behind them, momentarily cutting off the sounds of the pursuing horde.

It was less of a home and more of a mausoleum for the living, all sharp angles and imposing parapets. "Kai, the gate!" I screamed as a wall of steel spikes rushed toward us. Kai didn't flinch. He didn't lift his foot from the accelerator. "Hold on!" A laser scanner swept across the front of the vehicle. A split second before we impacted, the ten-foot-tall steel gates groaned and retracted into the rock walls. We blew through the opening at nearly a hundred miles an hour, tires squealing on the polished cobblestones of the courtyard.

It was not stable. Light bled out of it in sharp pulses, each glow showing glimpses of bone, sinew, and fractured stone as if the gate itself had been stitched together from the remains of the dead. It pulsed erratically, shrinking even as it widened, a door caught between closing forever and collapsing into oblivion.

He saluted and rushed inside the compound. As soon as he was inside, the gate was opened. It was a remote controlled gate so he wasn't by the gate pushing it open. Stephany drove inside the compound and as she passed the security guard saluted again and waved after the car went. This enlightened Stephany's mood a little. She drove to the home with the plate V515 and opened the rare lights. The gate beeped and opened by itself as she drove to the tiny compound into the underground private parking space.

The farther we drove, the less familiar the surroundings became. Bethany suddenly pointed toward something up ahead. “There,” she said. I followed her gaze and saw a towering black gate, framed by thick trees on either side. It was old but sturdy, the kind of structure that promised secrecy. I slowed the car to a stop in front of it. Without hesitation, Bethany stepped out and approached a small security stand with a camera mounted on top. She leaned in, allowing the camera to scan her face. A moment later, the heavy metal gate slid open with a deep, mechanical groan.

His first sight of the city gates confirmed that they had not been exaggerating. At first he simply took in the wonder. The massive gates were of highly polished timbers, strapped with ornate, heavy iron. The size alone made him realize that an immense amount of work had gone into their construction. What took his breath away, however, was that inset into each side of the gate was the image of a Dragon. Clearly representing the Guardians, the one on the left was composed of glittering quartz and pearl, scintillating in the growing daylight.
