Chapter 1: The wedding

Mabel's POV Exhaling steadily, I reminded myself that everything would soon be over. There's no need for any of this, as the marriage certificate has already been signed. But it's my father's most anticipated moment and it would be inconsiderate of me to rob him of it. The doors opened, accompanied by a wave of uneasiness. This was really happening. It wasn't a dream. I was getting married to someone I'd never met before. “Are you ready?” My father spoke softly. But what if I wasn't? Would that change anything? I inhaled sharply, my breath shuddering slightly. “Yes, Dad.” A forced smile tugged on the corner of my lips. He squeezed my palm softly which somehow managed to calm me, while his right hand rolled the wheel of his chair, and slowly, we strolled down the aisle. This felt like the longest walk of my life. Almost like walking out of my freedom and into the Lion's den. I could see the priest and the man standing before him—the stranger I was supposed to marry. I knew not

Chapter 2: The Busy Groom

Mabel’s POV My ears twitched. Alert. Waiting for more words, but there were none. I took a slow, deliberate turn and my eyes landed on him. But I couldn't make out his features from where he sat cross-legged in the far left corner of the living room. “Mr Ferguson,” I called, but it came out more like a question. I had to be sure it was him before giving him a piece of my mind. He didn't say a word. Instead, he stood up, his full height unveiling, taking slow but steady strides toward me like someone accustomed to obedience from others. My anger increased with every step that he took, making my grip tighten on the fabric of my dress. Stopping just a few feet away from me, the room suddenly felt cold due to his dominating and intimidating aura. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me, this was him. The jerk who sent a substitute in his stead. The jerk who stood me up at the altar. My jaw tightened as I tried to contain the storm brewing within me. My eyes narrowed at him, scrutiniz

Chapter 3: Welcome Dinner

Mabel's POV I squinted, taking a closer look. And that's when I recognized it, It's the one the lady had given me at the wedding. I had forgotten about it. My fingers carefully spread it open, displaying a beautiful handwritten note: "Please look after my son and keep him safe, just as you would yourself.”. A frown crept on my face. Was she mocking me? Who needed protection, he or I? I squeezed it with a huff and let it drop to the floor. “It's nothing important,” I said dismissively, brushing what I had just read to the back of my mind. *************** Standing in front of the huge mansion, my fingers clenched tightly on my purse, my mind spiraling with a million reasons why I shouldn't be here. I should be getting ready for work. Not out here pretending to be a good daughter-in-law. This wasn't a role I wanted to play. “It's okay to be nervous, most first times are like that.” Nora nudged me, a small smile forming on her face. Nervous? Who was nervous? I watched her blankly w

Chapter 4: Family reunion

Mabel's POV My eyes traced the direction of the voice to the door, and there stood three more people: two older people, a man, and a woman. Standing in front of them was a man who looked around my age. From the way his nose fled and his jaw clenched, I knew it was he who owned the voice. Things seemed to have gotten more interesting. With my gaze still lingering on them, my fingers grabbed another glass of water and brought it to my lips. The old man froze in his tracks, a surprised look plastered on his face. A loud bang caused me to jolt up and spill water on myself, “Shit” I cursed as the cold liquid trickled down my body. Landon stood abruptly, his fists trembling with restrained fury. His jaws tightened in anger, eyes growing darker than usual, yet, he didn't say a word. He looked conflicted, and that got me amused. As the trio walked toward us like some kind of heroes here to say the day, Olivia's smirk didn't go unnoticed by me. “What nonsense is this?” The old m

Chapter 5: Scolded

Mabel's POV The subtle glow of the morning sun spilled through the curtains of my room, kissing my skin softly. I stretched, a small moan escaping my lips. Time to get ready for work. Recalling yesterday's incidents: the wedding, the whole family drama, and Landon's attitude toward me. The weight of the whole ordeal starts to sink in. I am married, not out of love but out of duty. Whether I liked it or not, things are not going to remain the same anymore. I would have to learn to share my space which is something I'm not sure I am ready to do. Landon didn't come back to the Villa last night and that's something I was grateful for. He's one person I wasn't ready to be dealing with now. “Good morning, my lady; breakfast is ready.” Carefully, I descended the staircase, my eyes partially searching for the owner of the unfamiliar voice. Then I saw her, a middle-aged woman wearing an apron over her gown. She noticed my confused countenance and clarified, smiling warmly. “I'm Belind

Chapter 6: The Press conference

Mabel's POV There's no time for all of this. My team and I had to leave soon. An exhausted sigh left my lips with my hand rubbing my temples. This is going to be a long day. My feet carried me hastily to where she stood before she took another step closer. “Aunt, what are you doing here?” I asked, fearing that she might cause a scene because it's something she's good at. Instead of words, her puffy eyes glared at me scornfully, eying me from head to toe and that's when I knew she might really cause a scene and embarrass me sooner or later. “Let's talk somewhere a bit private,” Linking my arm with hers, I led her away. She didn't resist, so I took her to a more secluded corner. “Tell me it's not true.” She pleaded, breathing heavily as though she was about to have a convulsion. Her eyes, which were earlier filled with rage, were now sorrowful, causing a dull ache in my chest. “Why did you do this to me? Have I committed a crime so unforgivable that the heavens chose to punish

Chapter 7: Fired

Mabel's POV “Mabel Hawkins! To my office, now!” My supervisor’s angry voice echoed through the room as soon as he got sight of me as if he had been waiting for me in the reception, storming off immediately after. “I think you're in big trouble this time,” Dylan said worriedly, his voice laced with pity. His worried eyes watched me eagerly, waiting for a response but he didn't get any. The moment that jerk instructed the driver not to take me, I knew my day was pretty messed up. That's where all the bad luck originated from. I'm certain. First, I couldn't even sleep well due to being suddenly thrust into an entirely different world from the one I had known my entire life, then I got yelled at by my supervisor for being late because Landon denied me a ride, my aunt suddenly showed up and tried to cause a scene, followed by the most embarrassing interview in the history of Fact Central Media and now I got summoned by my supervisor again. Only God knows what fate waits me this time.

Chapter 8: Come at me!

Mabel's POV “I see,” The bitter words spilled through my gritted teeth, my stomach churning in disgust at the mention of his name. “Let's head there right away. You can drop these for now, we might still have a chance to turn things around.” He said pleadingly. If only he knew. He tried to take the box from me but I resisted. Shooting him a warning glare. I wasn't going to talk to any stupid Landon. “What makes you think he will budge?” “Are you already giving up without trying?” He snapped with a disappointed frown. I could feel the anger boiling within me, threatening to rip me apart. “Do you have any idea how enraged I am? I'm resisting the urge to go to InfiniTech Global and disfigure his proud face.” I growled aggressively. His eyes grew wider with a slight hint of panic; quickly putting his palm over my mouth, he whisper-yelled, “Are you crazy? Someone could hear you!” Yes, I am crazy. Ever since I met that creature, I've overused my brain and now I'm emotionally str

Chapter 9: You'll Regret this

Mabel's POV I turned to see AJ who stared at me as if he had seen a ghost. His brows twitched slightly as he tried the decipher the meaning of this. Slowly, he drifted his eyes to the men in suits, “What is going on here?” Their leader responded, “They came to see President Ferguson without an appointment, and I told them they needed to have an appointment first, and she resulted to this…” his eyes sized me up from head to toe as though he was mocking me. “Can you stop now?” Dylan said in a low voice from behind, his voice cracking with a slight measure of embarrassment. That's when I realized I was still in that posture. Slowly, I readjusted myself and straightened my shirt, no need to rush me. I will do things on my own terms. AJ heaved a deep sigh, nodding, “It's okay, President Ferguson will see them now,” he gestured for me to go to him. I stuck out my tongue at them victoriously. I could see the surprise on their faces. Surprised that AJ would let a mad woman see their bo

Chapter 10: On the News

Mabel's POV Storming out of Landon's office with my fists tightly clenched and my knuckles turning white, I cursed repeatedly under my breath. Cursing the day I crossed paths with this monster, cursing whatever reason that led to this unfortunate union. He thinks he can oppress me, control me like a fucking robot just because he's flaunting his granddaddy's money. He's never had to struggle for anything, every single fucking thing that he has is because the old man had laid a solid foundation for him to prosper. Not by his might. He was born into wealth and just got lucky. And now he thinks I'm the perfect one to bully, to push around like a stroller. My body trembled with barely contained anger. I brushed past Dylan without sparing him a glance, heading straight for the elevator. He rushed to keep up with my pace, not saying a word. I could tell he wanted to blame me for not keeping my anger in check, thereby messing everything up; he wanted badly to tell me that I was at fault
