“Landon is here?” Mabel asked, turning to look behind her, a frown forming on her face. “Are you stalking me? Huh?” She asked drunkenly and made to climb down from the stool, but she missed her footing and fell toward Landon who instinctively caught her in his arms. Upon realizing what he had done, Landon suddenly pushed her away from his body like he had touched a bag of filth, making her fall to the ground on her butt. “Ouch!” She winced as her butt came in contact with the hard floor. Landon felt a pang of pity for her but quickly masked it. Such a shameless woman isn't worth his sympathy. She was married, yet she was drunk at a bar, flirting with a random guy. ******* What happens if your wedding was never about love but about settling an old score? Mabel never wanted an arranged marriage, but honoring her father’s dying wish left her no choice. On her wedding day, her groom, Landon Ferguson, didn’t bother to show up only sending someone in his place. Humiliated and furious, she swore never to forgive him. As the truth behind their arranged marriage comes to light, Mabel realizes too late some debts demand more than just a name on a marriage certificate. Some demand a sacrifice.

Chapter 1: The wedding

Mabel's POVI took a deep breath, reminding myself that everything would soon come to an end. I didn't want this wedding; neither of us did. The marriage certificate had already been signed, so there was no need for any of this. I'm only doing this for my father. It's his most anticipated moment, and I won't rob him of that. The doors opened, and I looked at my father, who was all smiles.“Are you ready?” he asked me. But what if I wasn't? Would that change anything?“Yes, Dad.” I forced a smile. He reached for my hand, taking it on his left side while his right hand rolled the wheel of his chair, and we gently strolled down the aisle. It felt like the longest walk of my life. I could see the priest and the man standing before him—the one I was supposed to marry. I had never met him before. He had come back to the country a few months ago, and now we were supposed to get married. I knew nothing about this man.The empty church pews seemed to mock me. This was not how I had imagined g...

Chapter 2: The Busy Groom
Mabel’s POV When I entered I didn't realize there was someone else in the room.I turned slowly and I saw him. But I couldn't make out his features from where he sat cross-legged. If I had scanned the room when I entered, I would've spotted him at the far left corner of the living room.“Mr Ferguson?” I called to be sure it was him before giving a piece of my mind.He didn't say a word. He uncrossed his legs and stood up, taking slow but steady strides towards me. He walked like someone accustomed to obedience from others. He stopped about four feet from where I stood. There was an unusual coldness in the room due to his presence. His presence was dominating and intimidating.I took my time to scrutinize his facial features: well-pointed nose, sharp jawline, beautiful brown eyes, and tempting pink lips. His lower lip was slightly fuller, giving him the perfect look for modeling. I must say, his face was perfectly sculpted. His beard was neatly trimmed and brown hair professionally

Chapter 3: Welcome Dinner
Mabel's POV I took a close look, and It was the one the lady had given me at the wedding. It read: "Please look after my son and keep him safe, just as you would yourself.”.A frown crept on my face. Was she mocking me? Who needed protection, he or I?I squeezed it and let it drop to the floor. “It's nothing important,” I said dismissively.*****Standing in front of the huge mansion, my fingers clutched tightly on my purse. “It's okay to be nervous, most first times are like that.” Nora nudged me.Nervous? Who was nervous?I glanced at her without saying a word. We had just met, so it was understandable to assume things.“Lead the way,” I said curtly. She walked towards the main entrance and I followed behind. She already told me that she was familiar with the place because her mother had worked for the Fergusons ever since she was a kid. And Now, due to a situation she got caught up in, she found herself in the same position. She didn't delve into details and I couldn't care less

Chapter 4: Family reunion
Mabel's POV I followed the direction of the voice to the door, and there stood three more people: two older people, a man, and a woman. Standing in front of them was a man who looked around my age.I could tell it was he who owned the voice from the way his nose fled. It seemed things just got more interesting. The old man was taken aback. Landon banged his fist on the table and stood abruptly, his jaws clenched in anger and eyes darkened, yet didn't say a word.It looked like there was a conflict within him.The trio walked toward us like some kind of heroes here to say the day. Olivia's smark didn't go unnoticed by me.“What nonsense is this?” The old man questioned. But his tone held amusement rather than rage.“I told you, I didn’t come to cause trouble, I came because I deserved to be here. Because we deserved to be here.” Olivia chipped in.The youngest among the trio walked to the table and grabbed a glass, poured himself a drink, and made a sarcastic toast “To family; where

Chapter 5: Scolded
Mabel's POV The next day I dressed up for work and went downstairs.Recalling last night's incident, what pained me more was Landon's attitude towards me.The driver took Nora and me back to the Villa. Landon didn't show up and I was glad.I just couldn't stand him.“Good morning, my lady; breakfast is ready.” The voice was unfamiliar. Then I saw her, a middle-aged woman wearing an apron over her gown. She noticed my confused countenance and clarified, “I'm Belinda, the housekeeper; I took the day off yesterday.” “Oh,” that's all I managed to say.Looking around, I couldn't see Nora, then I asked, “Where is Nora?”“Over here!” She squealed like a kid from the kitchen, waving her hands as she approached us.“I see you've met Belina.” “Yeah,” I said casually and made to walk past her.“You look like you didn't sleep a wink last night. Is everything alright?” Belinda asked with concern.I was too upset to have a good sleep.“It's probably all the stress.” I reached the table and pick

Chapter 6: The Press conference
Mabel's POV I didn't have the time for all of this. My team and I had to leave soon.I hastened my steps as I approached her, where she stood.“Aunt, what are you doing here?” I asked, fearing that she might cause a scene.“Let's talk somewhere a bit private,” I said, taking her hand in mine. She didn't resist, I took her to a more secluded corner.“Tell me it's not true.” She pleaded; her eyes, which were earlier filled with rage, were now sorrowful. I felt a dull ache in my chest.“Why did you do this to me? Have I committed a crime so unforgivable that the heavens chose to punish me this way?” she said with teary eyes.“I didn't mean to keep this away from you. I didn't even want this. Dad promised me he would tell you himself and I thought he did.” I explained rushing my words as an indication that I was in a hurry.“You didn't want this, yet you went ahead with it?” Her voice held disbelief.“Dad made it his dying wish.” She gasped.“That block-headed brother of mine! I will so

Chapter 7: Fired
Mabel's POV “Mabel Hawkins! To my office, now!” My supervisor’s angry voice commanded as soon as he got sight of me. With that, he stormed off.It seemed like he was waiting for me in the reception.“I think you're in big trouble this time,” Dylan said, his voice holding a hint of pity. The moment that jerk instructed the driver not to take me, I knew my day was pretty messed up. First, I couldn't even sleep well, then I got yelled at by my supervisor, my aunt tried to cause a scene, followed by the most embarrassing interview and now I got summoned by my supervisor again.I've never had a lot of bad things happen to me in one day like today.I don't know why, but this time, I felt a little scared; I should have just stuck with the script. To be honest, I didn't know it would be that jerk at the press conference. I rushed the questions, and I missed the basic details. If I had known it was him, I would've bailed out, somehow, anyhow. But it was already too late. When I went to join

Chapter 8: Come at me!
Mabel's POV “I see,” I said in between gritted teeth.“Let's head there right away. You can drop these for now, we might still have a chance to turn things around.” He pleaded. If only he knew.He made to take the box from me but I resisted.“What makes you think he will bulge?” I asked.“Are you already giving up without trying?” He snapped with a frown.“Do you have any idea how enraged I am?I'm resisting the urge to go to InfiniTech Global and disfigure his proud face.” I growled aggressively. He quickly put his palm over my mouth and whisper-yelled “Are you crazy? Someone could hear you!”Yes, I am crazy. Ever since I met that creature, I've overused my brain and now I'm emotionally stressed. I need to punch someone.Someone has to take responsibility, it's been a while since I last trained.I dropped the box I was carrying on the desk closest to me and forcefully yanked his hand from my mouth. I held his arm over my head, twisted it, and placed it on his back. Forcing him to b
