Mabel's POV

The subtle glow of the morning sun spilled through the curtains of my room, kissing my skin softly. I stretched, a small moan escaping my lips.

Time to get ready for work.

Recalling yesterday's incidents: the wedding, the whole family drama, and Landon's attitude toward me. The weight of the whole ordeal starts to sink in.

I am married, not out of love but out of duty. Whether I liked it or not, things are not going to remain the same anymore. I would have to learn to share my space which is something I'm not sure I am ready to do.

Landon didn't come back to the Villa last night and that's something I was grateful for. He's one person I wasn't ready to be dealing with now.

“Good morning, my lady; breakfast is ready.” Carefully, I descended the staircase, my eyes partially searching for the owner of the unfamiliar voice.

Then I saw her, a middle-aged woman wearing an apron over her gown.

She noticed my confused countenance and clarified, smiling warmly. “I'm Belinda, the housekeeper. I took the day off yesterday. That's why we didn't meet.”

“Oh,” That's all I managed to say.

Looking around, I couldn't see Nora, so I asked, “Where is Nora?”

“Over here!” She squealed like a kid, from the kitchen, waving her hands as she walked to us.

“I see you've met Belina.” Her eyes lit up radiantly.

“Yeah,” I said casually, walking past her.

Belinda's eyes followed me as I moved, her eyebrows knitting together to form a concerned frown. “You look like you didn't sleep a wink last night. Is everything alright?”

I held back a sigh. She was right. I was too upset to have a good sleep. Yesterday was a little too much for a starter like me.

“It's probably all the stress.” I reached the table and picked a meatball. It tasted so good that I got tempted to sit but I was almost late for work.

“Is it to your liking?” Belinda asked, slightly nervous. Her curious eyes watched me expectantly, dying to get a response from me. A positive one.

“Yes, too bad I can't dig in right now.” I let out a frustrated hiss. I wished I could stay just a little longer, the aroma was still very tempting.

“Why not?” She pressed.

“I'm almost late for work.”

“In that case, I should pack some food for you.” She suggested, turning to the kitchen.

“No need, please.” There was no point, I wouldn't eat it anyway.

It's a habit of mine, no matter how hungry I was, I would only eat once I got home because I'd be so invested in my job that taking a break would be a problem.

With that, I walked hastily out of the door before they could bring more suggestions.

Getting into the car, I rested my head against the seat to take a breather while casually handing the driver the address.

But nothing prepared me for his response.

“I have orders not to take you anywhere; I'm sorry, ma'am.”

I furrowed my brow. “Whose orders?” The question left my mouth even though I knew deep down it was that Jerk! I held my breath, anticipating his response.

“President Ferguson's orders.” He confirmed my suspicion.

Exhaling deeply, I gave a little nod feigning a relaxed expression.

“I see.” I got down from the car and slammed the car door so hard that it could come off, making the driver flinch at the impact.

I leaned towards the window and signaled for the driver to roll down the glass and he did,

“When you see him, you can tell him to shove it up his ass.” His eyes widened in utmost disbelief.

Landon was surely getting on my nerves, as if yesterday's humiliation wasn't enough, now this. This is so petty and immature!

My palm balled into a fist, my jaw hardening.

Well, to hell with him and his car!

Once again, I practiced my breathing technique, it has always helped me maintain my composure. There's no way I was letting this jerk get under my skin today!

10 minutes passed, and I was still waiting for a cab; there was not even a single commercial vehicle on the road. Hissing for the umpteenth time, I paced silently trying to hide my impatience and desperation because I knew the driver was watching me.

It's no doubt that I was already late and I could feel my frustration bobbling.

Then I remembered that I could just order an Uber. Luckily my ride was only 5 minutes away.

************************************

I hurried into the building, making a quick stop at the reception to sign in then I went straight to my department. The workspace I shared with my colleagues was separated by low-walled cubicles, giving every worker a sense of privacy.

“I thought you were going to ditch today as well,” Dylan commented, spinning around his space in his chair, the sarcasm in his voice unhidden.

Ignoring his taunts, I asked about what bothered me.

“Is he in?” I was more worried about how to face my supervisor. He liked yelling even when there wasn't a need to. No one knows his problem. And now that I was already late, he had more reasons to spit on my face.

“Yeah, he asked about you just a few moments ago. I covered for you yesterday, that was the agreement. You were supposed to be here earlier.” He finished his words with a simple shrug.

“Shit!” I cursed under my breath. This is all because of that massive jerk, Landon!

“Where did you go? And why didn't you tell me you were moving out?” Dylan had been my friend since childhood and we both secured a job at the broadcasting company. We've had each other's backs ever since.

I feel bad for not telling him, not like I don't want to, but I don't trust his mouth. He talks too much.

“Your aunt slammed the door in my face when I came over to your place to get the hard drive, I almost lost a toe!” he lifted his leg so I could see it from my cubicle. I rolled my eyes at his exaggeration.

“Then I heard from the neighbors that you moved out! I thought we were friends! The neighbors knew but I didn't!” He blinked his eyes rapidly and dramatically. I was going to roll my eyes again before a loud voice startled us.

“Mabel Hawkins!” I flinched. “My office, now!” The voice thundered. My eyes met with my supervisor's angry ones as he stood outside his office fuming, his hands gripping tightly on the railing.

“Yes, Mr Fredd.” An apologetic smile hung on my lips.

“Looks like you're in some deep shit.” Dylan mocked.

On my way out I picked up a pile of files from his desk and dumped it on his head.

“Ouch! What the hell was that for?” He groaned. “You ungrateful child!”

I knocked on the door and waited for an invitation to go in. When I didn't get a response, I knocked again.

“Do you intend to uproot the door?” He barked from inside. Typical Mr. Fredd.

“Sorry, Mr. Fredd” I apologized and stepped in.

He was pacing around his office with both hands on his waist. Because I was already used to him being that way, none of that bothered me.

“Do you want me to be fired?” He stopped in front of me, his chest rising and falling. “Do you want to take my position?”

I fixed him with a confused gaze without saying a word.

“Don't stare at me like you didn't get the email!” His hands flew up in frustration.

My confusion faded as it occurred to me that I hadn't checked my emails in a while because I didn't have the time. Yesterday was a busy day for me. Immediately, I brought out my phone and glanced through it.

“What? You're just checking now??” His angry voice now held a hint of disbelief.

Then I saw the specific mail. I was supposed to attend a press conference this morning. Shit!

There are not many details about the interview, but the reporter who was supposed to cover the interview was handed another task. Hence the urgency and need for replacement. The email was even sent late in the evening.

His eyes watched me, disappointment replacing the anger in them.

“Mabel, you were better than this; I'm so disappointed in you.”

“Sorry, Mr. Fredd,” Sometimes the best thing you can do is apologize and let things go. Especially in cases like this when somebody like Mr. Fredd wouldn't give a shit about any excuse you make.

“Because of you, my department is left behind again. I'm being mocked by my colleagues.” I remained silent as I watched him lament.

“What do I do now? The interview must have begun already!” He slammed his palm on his desk, his head shaking sideways.

“I'll head out right away with my team.” I excused myself and left before he could continue yelling. I was a team leader of six. My team was made up of three people from the news department including me,

and three people from the operation department who handled the camera, sound, and lighting.

Dylan was the editor on my team, and he's proven to be very useful over the past 3 years while I've only been a team leader for a year.

“Dylan, get everyone ready, we're leaving in 10,” I announced as I reached our workspace, moving to my desk to pick up a few things I might need.

“There's someone here to see you,” Dylan said. A frown formed on my face. I wasn't expecting anyone and I didn't have the time to meet with people.

“Not now Dylan, there's too much to do.” I dismissed it without a second thought.

“The person looks like they could eat you up.” He added with a knowing smirk. My brow curved to form a questioning arch.

My curiosity pushed me to ask, “Who is it?”

“I can't tell you that, it spoils the fun.” He giggled. I rolled my eyes at his childishness.

“When will you ever grow up?” I sighed in frustration, heading to the reception to see who it was; maybe, just maybe, they were worth my time.

My eyes met with a pair of bloodshot eyes! Oh no!

Mabel's POV There's no time for all of this. My team and I had to leave soon. An exhausted sigh left my lips with my hand rubbing my temples. This is going to be a long day. My feet carried me hastily to where she stood before she took another step closer. “Aunt, what are you doing here?” I asked, fearing that she might cause a scene because it's something she's good at. Instead of words, her puffy eyes glared at me scornfully, eying me from head to toe and that's when I knew she might really cause a scene and embarrass me sooner or later. “Let's talk somewhere a bit private,” Linking my arm with hers, I led her away. She didn't resist, so I took her to a more secluded corner. “Tell me it's not true.” She pleaded, breathing heavily as though she was about to have a convulsion. Her eyes, which were earlier filled with rage, were now sorrowful, causing a dull ache in my chest. “Why did you do this to me? Have I committed a crime so unforgivable that the heavens chose to punish

Mabel's POV “Mabel Hawkins! To my office, now!” My supervisor’s angry voice echoed through the room as soon as he got sight of me as if he had been waiting for me in the reception, storming off immediately after. “I think you're in big trouble this time,” Dylan said worriedly, his voice laced with pity. His worried eyes watched me eagerly, waiting for a response but he didn't get any. The moment that jerk instructed the driver not to take me, I knew my day was pretty messed up. That's where all the bad luck originated from. I'm certain. First, I couldn't even sleep well due to being suddenly thrust into an entirely different world from the one I had known my entire life, then I got yelled at by my supervisor for being late because Landon denied me a ride, my aunt suddenly showed up and tried to cause a scene, followed by the most embarrassing interview in the history of Fact Central Media and now I got summoned by my supervisor again. Only God knows what fate waits me this time.

Mabel's POV “I see,” The bitter words spilled through my gritted teeth, my stomach churning in disgust at the mention of his name. “Let's head there right away. You can drop these for now, we might still have a chance to turn things around.” He said pleadingly. If only he knew. He tried to take the box from me but I resisted. Shooting him a warning glare. I wasn't going to talk to any stupid Landon. “What makes you think he will budge?” “Are you already giving up without trying?” He snapped with a disappointed frown. I could feel the anger boiling within me, threatening to rip me apart. “Do you have any idea how enraged I am? I'm resisting the urge to go to InfiniTech Global and disfigure his proud face.” I growled aggressively. His eyes grew wider with a slight hint of panic; quickly putting his palm over my mouth, he whisper-yelled, “Are you crazy? Someone could hear you!” Yes, I am crazy. Mabel's POV I turned to see AJ who stared at me as if he had seen a ghost. His brows twitched slightly as he tried the decipher the meaning of this. Slowly, he drifted his eyes to the men in suits, “What is going on here?” Their leader responded, “They came to see President Ferguson without an appointment, and I told them they needed to have an appointment first, and she resulted to this…” his eyes sized me up from head to toe as though he was mocking me. “Can you stop now?” Dylan said in a low voice from behind, his voice cracking with a slight measure of embarrassment. That's when I realized I was still in that posture. Slowly, I readjusted myself and straightened my shirt, no need to rush me. I will do things on my own terms. AJ heaved a deep sigh, nodding, “It's okay, President Ferguson will see them now,” he gestured for me to go to him. I stuck out my tongue at them victoriously. I could see the surprise on their faces. Surprised that AJ would let a mad woman see their bo

  • A Debt of Vows    Chapter 10: On the News

Mabel's POV Storming out of Landon's office with my fists tightly clenched and my knuckles turning white, I cursed repeatedly under my breath. Cursing the day I crossed paths with this monster, cursing whatever reason that led to this unfortunate union. He thinks he can oppress me, control me like a fucking robot just because he's flaunting his granddaddy's money. He's never had to struggle for anything, every single fucking thing that he has is because the old man had laid a solid foundation for him to prosper. Not by his might. He was born into wealth and just got lucky. And now he thinks I'm the perfect one to bully, to push around like a stroller. My body trembled with barely contained anger. I brushed past Dylan without sparing him a glance, heading straight for the elevator. He rushed to keep up with my pace, not saying a word. I could tell he wanted to blame me for not keeping my anger in check, thereby messing everything up; he wanted badly to tell me that I was at fault

Mabel's POV Okay, that came out a little harsher than intended, and I regretted it immediately, but I didn't say anything else. Instead, I hastened my footsteps up the stairs. Inside my room, I undressed, took a warm bath, and surprisingly, sleep came. I freely gave myself to it, allowing myself to forget my current situation, even for a moment. When I wake up, I'll deal with reality, but for now, I choose to embrace sleep. ******************************* I woke up a few minutes past noon, the next day. I was even surprised at how long I had slept, it was hard to believe that I could have that much sleep when my entire life was in the abyss. Turning on my phone, the notifications came flooding in, with my phone vibrating intensely as if it was on the brink of crashing. My dad had called 5 times since yesterday, my aunt called 16 times and Dylan called 8 times. I saw other missed calls from unknown callers but I wasn't sure what to do with them. Just as my finger moved to dial my

Mabel's POV Slowing down my pace with my mood suddenly shifting from cheerful to bitter, my fists balled involuntarily, vibrating with harbored hatred. That arrogant jerk was sitting in the living room with a stupid smug on his face; I could feel my blood boiling as my anger threatened to make a massive comeback. There's nothing I wanted more than to throw a dirty slap across his cocky face. My eyes met his and I glared deadly at him. If looks could kill, he would've been long dead. I let out a loud hiss in disgust, loud enough for anyone in the living room to hear, and then I entered the kitchen. It was my first time in the kitchen since my arrival here. It was spacious and well-constructed, but I was too pissed off to admire it. First, I grabbed a glass and tried to pour myself some water, but it slipped and fell to the ground with the broken pieces flying here and there. Just great! Thanks to my quick reflexes, I was able to move my foot before the glass reached the ground.

Landon's POV I trusted AJ to handle the situation and make sure she remained blacklisted, and he didn't disappoint because, in no time, Mr. Fredd of Fact Central Media released an official speech, publicly apologizing and indirectly shifting the blame to Mabel. I made sure her face was on every TV channel. I made sure she was dragged roughly and mercilessly through the streets of T*****r. I made sure she understood just how much influence I had. The next few days that followed, she stayed out of sight. She never left the house and no one came to visit either. I had eyes everywhere monitoring her movement and none of them saw her leave the villa. And when she didn't leave the villa for days, I assumed she was grieving over her dead career or plotting a comeback, or both. I wished I could see her look of helplessness but I was too busy setting up the company since it was opening officially in less than a week. Mabel's POV I walked for a short time before reaching the mansion, as the estate itself could pass for a community. Because they already knew me, I was granted easy access to the building. A maid directed me to Olivia's chambers, and I started moving again. As I walked, I roamed the building with my eyes, it looked like it had just been completed recently, or maybe it was renovated. The interior was nothing I'd seen before; it wasn't just an estate; it was a kingdom. This place reeked of money, you can hear everything screaming ‘money!’ As I made my way through the grand hallway, I couldn't help but admire the ceilings that soared impossibly high, decorated with elegant moldings, while expensive artwork lined the walls. Each piece was probably worth more than my entire life’s earnings.“I told you to leave it to me, I know what I'm doing.” I heard a voice say. It was Olivia's, my pace slowed as I approached the door to her chamber.“You were taking a lot of time. I don't have that m

I read it on a blog, why did you do that to me?” She asked, blinking her long artificial eyelashes as she stared up at me.Looking down at her, I saw every reason why I shouldn't tell her about my moves. She's too clingy. I hate clingy women.“You didn't answer my question.” I reminded her, my patience running thin. Her eyes roamed my face trying to study my mood, sensing that I wasn't joking around, she responded slowly,“I heard you're recruiting employees for your new company and I thought it was the perfect place to start my career.”“You're a lit

Landon's POV I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window inside my office with my hands sealed away in my pockets not staring at anything in particular, just waiting patiently for AJ to get the information I wanted. Mabel crossed the line this time. Our marriage may not be intimate but she had no right to sleep around. She had no right to spend the night outside her matrimonial home!
