Chapter 21

I blinked and there I was, a forest with trees so thick and high that I could only see the sky inky night sky above me illuminated by the full white moon. I stood in the middle of a circle surrounded by trees and the moonlight sprinkled onto me like a shower. It was beautiful.I reached a hand out to grasp at the light that would slip through my fingers, but when I lifted what I thought was my hand, a white paw came into my vision, soft and new. With a yelp that I intended to be a cry, I looked down at myself and saw that it wasn’t those stupid, vulnerable human legs that I stood on, but instead, I was supported by four powerful legs that had a strong and steady grip on the earth beneath me so that not even an earthquake could topple me. My tail wagged so fiercely that I thought I would take off like a helicopter and with a brief howl of joy I chased it, wanting to see how long it was, how fluffy it was, how perfect it was. I stumbled a little bit, not used to the new speed and weigh

Chapter 22

Alpha Jackson had returned to the infirmary for all of five seconds to give a quick overview of my leg and to place the silver anklet on my other foot before giving thanks to the doctor and heading off again. No word to me or to ask about me, though I could hardly be surprised. The doctor didn’t make any mention of my condition either or begin to discuss my dream with the alpha. When I asked him about it, he said something about ‘doctor-patient confidentiality’, which I didn’t understand. Why wouldn't he talk to the alpha about the conditions of his pack members? Everything that happened in the New Moon pack would be reported to Fredrick from when a pup was born to when a wolf died.“I’m not surprised you’re having nightmares,” Doctor Heath said, pulling me out of my thoughts as he checked on my burns one last time before he was satisfied, “you’ve been through a lot of trauma, it’s your subconscious’s way of processing that. It isn't particularly pleasant.”I only spoke briefly about

Chapter 23

"Yeah," I mumbled, pulling myself away from her before showing off my bandaged leg, "I didn’t manage to get very far."Annabelle looked at my ankle, her gaze quickly moving to my other one with the silver anklet. Her face contorted in a sympathetic expression like she could only imagine the pain I had gone through. I doubt she had ever witnessed a silver burn before and found myself glad for it because I wouldn't wish that upon anyone."I’m sorry you felt you had to leave.""It wasn’t your fault," I reassured her hoping it would be some kind of comfort because it was true.Annabelle had been nothing but kind and gracious towards me. She was one of two people in the pack who had tried to make me feel welcome and supported me despite the circumstances that brought me to them. She had tried to defend me against Poppy and her alpha even though I was just a rogue from a dangerous pack. She had done more for me in the few hours I had known her than anyone outside of my family had even thoug

Chapter 24

Annabelle and I carried on walking until we got to the training grounds and by Goddess was it a sight to behold. I had seen it from a distance earlier but being face to face with it made it all the more amazing. The schooling house was just around the corner and the changing rooms were just in front of the field so people were able to change just before beginning their training. The field itself was a lush green that looked like it could run on for miles stretching into the forest, a pond somewhere close by and different pieces of equipment littered against the grass such as dumbbells and hurdles. "Why are there so many things?""Oh, some people have their own private routines, others like to work in groups but combat training and regular P.T. is done as a pack.""We didn’t have mandatory pack training," I replied, watching people begin to put away their equipment. "But we did have groups get together and not everyone was exactly willing."Annabelle gave me a sad and knowing smile b

Chapter 25

I stumbled into Alpha Jackson before I could stop myself, landing face-first on his chest. I shoved him away after I regained my balance and glowered at the alpha. I took back everything I said about him not being an asshole. He was a prick."And why not?" I asked defensively, "Why let me come here only to tell me to fuck off?"He had the gall to look amused as he crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow at me, "Did the words ‘fuck off’ come out of my mouth?" He retorted and I hated the way he seemed to be laughing at me for it. "Isn’t that what you’re doing? I can’t shift and your entire pack is here so what are you so afraid of?"There was no way that he could hate rogues this much to do this. This felt personal, for all the times I’d spoken out against him, for making him question Annabelle’s loyalty and my god damned snarky comments. He was pathetic if this was supposed to be an attempt at humiliation and punishment. I wanted to go and run with the pack anyway just to see what he w

Chapter 26

I’d only managed to get a few more punches in before the last few members of the pack finished up their laps and returned to the middle of the field. Some were lolling their tongues still in their wolf form in exhaustion, others seemed like they still had a lot of energy as they jogged on the spot. After the final pack member came they all shifted back into their human form waiting for further instructions. Alpha Jackson smirked as he pulled off his first pad with his mouth, the velcro ripping as he dropped them to the floor. I held out my gloved hands for him to help me but he just turned around, leaving my face burning red as I mimicked what he had just done and let my gloves fall to the floor. I wished I’d missed one of my punches and landed it in his face instead. "Are we all warmed up?" He asked the pack, looking for any signs of exhaustion or injury in case anyone had ignored his warnings. They all yelled out a ‘yes, Alpha,’ in response."Alright, get into pairs," He announce

Chapter 27

"You did such a good job for your first session!" Annabelle squealed as she joined me for a little bit in my house. She showed me how to work the TV properly and we put some music on for background sound to relax after the long day. I’d managed to get the stance pretty spot on to the point Alpha Jackson stopped correcting me about it. We switched after a little while so that he was the one punching and I was defending. His punches were powerful and precise. I ended up stumbling back slightly every so often from his pure strength even as I tried to stand my ground."You need to ground yourself," He had told me, shoving my legs with his feet to correct my stance, "Your centre of gravity needs to stay still and firm, I can’t knock you over if you don’t let me.""Yeah, but I’m sure you’d find it hilarious.""Maybe just a little bit.""Asshole." Annabelle and I sat on the sofa, cups of tea in our hands as a reward for the training and the rest of the day. After we’d finished training we

Chapter 28

Annabelle left sometime around one a.m. We hadn’t realised the time, and she had to rush off to head home. The room that was filled with light and laughter and friendship suddenly became cold and lonely. Even with the lights and heating on, the cold still seeped through my bones as if to remind me of what I didn’t have when Annabelle left. From all the emotions and adrenaline the past couple of days, being alone and rested made me realise just how lonely I was. I couldn’t accept this place as my home because my family weren’t there. My mother wasn’t singing songs at random, my father wasn’t reading a book in his chair and my brother wasn’t annoying the hell out of me. They were dead, maybe not even buried, and they weren’t coming back. The walls felt like they were closing in, trying to bury me in the cold and grief as I thought of my family. As I thought of Fredrick torturing my father and making me watch and my mother and brother’s body a bloodied mess. How was that only three days

Chapter 28.5

JacksonI hadn’t expected to see her like that. In all honesty, I thought she’d attempted to escape again despite the consequences of the night before and was more than ready to have her carted off to a cell. A second escape attempt would increase my suspicions that she had ulterior motives for getting away from my pack. What I saw couldn’t have been farther from the truth. Clarissa alerted me that the anklet had set off the signal that Elise was moving away from the pack, albeit slower than before. I assumed this was because of her injured leg and thought she must’ve been an utter idiot to try it again so soon. I didn’t see the need to shift as I leisurely walked to where she was located. I’d offer her no sympathy this time. In fact, I’d rip her leg off myself so that she’d be free of that anklet and I’d be free of her and wouldn’t be responsible for a rogue anymore. But then I heard it, a low, mournful, broken howl that scattered through someone’s throat like a desperate prayer. A

Chapter 29

I was changed after that night. Before it felt like I was drowning with an anchor attached to my leg, like no matter how hard I fought the current, nothing would work and I was slowly running out of air. Now, it was like the anchor had been broken off and I was left trying to swim on my own. So no, everything wasn’t suddenly okay, but it was more manageable and I finally felt like I had some semblance of control. After a couple of weeks, I felt a lot more comfortable in the pack, I still had plans to leave once the stupid anklet was off my leg, but at least I wasn’t running to get it burned off... Again. "Are you still having nightmares?" Doctor Heath asked, looking at my leg for the last time to make sure it was fully healed so I could take part in the full training. No more standing by and watching the others run or being a punching bag."No," I lied. When I visited Doctor Heath last week, I told him my nightmares were still there but I wasn’t struggling to sleep. To be honest I w
