Chapter 61

Early morning light filtered in softly through the blinds into the sterile hospital room. Eva slowly opened her eyes, and her sight finally cleared up, focusing on the brightness that had enveloped her. At last, her blurred vision clears and presents Shawn, seated at her bedside, staring with eyes heavy with sleep and burdened by an exhaustion inside him: deep concern lines were deeply trenched in his face."Good morning, sleepyhead," Shawn whispered softly, his voice almost too gentle, as he brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead.Eva shifted a little, trying to sit up. Her body felt heavier than usual. "What happened? Why am I here?" she tried to utter through her hoarse throat."You fainted, sweetheart," Diane's voice came from beside him, laced with concern. She stood at the foot of the bed, her arms across her chest, tight with worry. "The doctor said you've been overworking yourself. He instructed you to rest for a week."Eva furrowed her brow and tried to make sense of

Chapter 62

“Seriously, Ava.” Shawn laughed. “Do you think I'll be this calm and still be in my right mind, if you were dying ? Shawn asked, flashing a quick grin as he leaned back into the chair. It came out light, and teasing, but there was a flicker of unease in his eyes.Eva frowned. "You don't sound so calm to me," she crossed her arms, surveying him closely. "You've been hovering over me just like I'd break at any moment.“That's because you scared the hell out of me," Shawn repeated this time a little firmer. "You fainted, Ava. You rolled down an entire flight of stairs. Forgive me for being a little protective."Eva exhaled deeply, sinking into the couch. "I'm not made of glass, Shawn. You're all acting like I can't do anything on my own anymore. It's suffocating me.”Shawn puffed hard from pursed lips, his jaw working. "We're just trying to make sure you're alright.""I am all right," Eva said, on a puff of air, pushing herself off from the couch. "And I'm going to prove it to you."Sh

Chapter 63

Shawn's fingers firmed over his phone as his father's firm voice resounded through it."Shawn, the partnership presentation with Edward Langston is all that matters now," Henry Darlington said with no single streak of leniency. "You should nail the details and get the team ready. This deal isn't big for you; it's gigantic for the company.""I know, Dad," Shawn replied, pacing up and down in his room. "I have already prepared a draft presentation. I'll discuss it with the team first thing in the morning.""Good," Henry said, "Remember, Victor will stop at nothing to steal this deal from us. You can't afford even the slightest slip-ups."His expression changed; the moment his uncle's name cropped up, his face hardened. Victor Darlington had always seemed to him that one thorn in his way of success, somebody always staying one step ahead by pushing other people down and by guile. "Don't worry, I can handle it.""You better," Henry snapped. "I'm counting on you, Shawn."The screen was bla

Chapter 64

Shawn leaned against his desk, running a hand through his hair, frustration etched on his face. "This doesn’t make any sense," he muttered under his breath.Dean stepped into the office, carrying a stack of reports. "Are you okay, boss? You look like you’ve seen a ghost" Dean said, placing the files on the desk.Shawn’s eyes snapped up. "Dean, has anyone been in my office since yesterday? Think carefully."Dean frowned, his arms across his chest. "Nobody. The cleaning crew doesn't go into locked offices and I was here late tonight finishing reports. Your office was locked tight when I left.""Then can you explain how the plan presentation got missing," Shawn snapped, slamming a drawer closed.Dean's eyes opened wide. "Missing? You don't think it might be just hidden inside another file.”"I didn't lose it," Shawn growled. "I locked it in my desk drawer. It's gone, Dean. Somebody's taken it."Dean furrowed his brow at the thought of such a possibility. "Perhaps it was taken by one of t

Chapter 65

"Madam Tess, I am not an invalid!" Eva fumed, standing in the door of the kitchen with her arms crossed. "I don't need a sitter."Madam Tess looked up from where she carefully arranged slices of freshly baked cake on a plate. "And I am not a babysitter, Miss Eva," she returned as she smiled warmly. "I'm here to help. Now sit down. You'll hurt yourself trying to do everything alone."Eva groaned but sat reluctantly at the dining table. "I can make my own snacks, you know.""But can you do them as good as this?" Madam Tess teased, setting the plate before Eva.Her eyes suspicious, Eva eyed the cake before taking a mouthful. The strong chocolate flavor dissolving inside her mouth had her eyes going wide, "Ok, you win this round," she mumbled over the mouthful.Madam Tess giggled, tugging the chair up and plopping her bottom down opposite Eva. "You really are the sweetest young woman to attend to. You really make things easier."Eva swallowed, raising an eyebrow. "You know, I wasn't exact

Chapter 66

“Madam Tess, you’re a genius,” Eva said, taking another bite of the scrambled eggs. She set her fork down momentarily and looked at Shawn. “Seriously, these eggs are like… the best I’ve ever had.”Shawn smiled, leaning back in his chair as he took a sip of his coffee. "Glad you're enjoying her cooking," he said, the sound of relief lacing his tone. "Not sure how I would've handled this if you didn't have anyone here looking after you."Eva rolled her eyes at him, playfully. "I can look after myself, Shawn. But… I admit it's kind of nice not having to do everything myself for a change." She took another forkful; her eyes were twinkling with delight. "Madam Tess should franchise a restaurant.”"Maybe she should," Shawn replied, smiling, an edge in his voice only a person in tune with the minutest aspects of his being might notice, as the fact that all of life was slipping down between his fingers still bothered him. Eva, fully unaware of the storm brewing inside his head, continued, "S

Chapter 67

Eva sat in her study room, fingers at the keyboard of her laptop, but miles away inside. All that kept occurring in her mind was the glimpse she had earlier seen of Madam Tess, who poured her pills from one bottle to another, and was adamant not to leave that easily. The creaking of the door as it swung opened dispelled her concentration. In a flash, she looked up and saw that Madam Tess was already standing at her door with the tray on her hand.Miss Ava, here's your pills, it just arrived from the hospital," Madam Tess said with an even calm tone though Eva sensed an undertone in her voice which she could hardly place. She gingerly placed the tray on the desk-the bottle of pills and the glass of water set carefully before her.Eva stared and stared at the bottle, as if it was forever, her heart thudding against her chest. Her eyes darted between Madam Tess and the pill bottle, failing to mask the suspicion in them. Her mind was a flurry of questions."What's wrong, Miss Ava?" the so

Chapter 68

"Shawn, focus!" Henry's sharp voice sliced through the silence, his hand slapping hard on the table.Shawn flinched, his cup of coffee almost toppling over. His father's glare was scalding, replete with frustration. "I am focused," Shawn muttered, hurrying to rearrange the papers before him.Henry crossed his arms over his chest, his looming figure overshadowing the desk. "Then stop fumbling like a rookie. We have been at this all night, and I need you at your best. We are not walking into that meeting with half-baked confidence.”"I know, Dad," Shawn replied. But his voice didn't sound very convincing at all. Guiltier with each passing second, he hadn't told his father that it was the original presentation which had been stolen from his office.Henry’s pacing resumed, his voice steady but firm. “This presentation will not only secure the deal but solidify our reputation. Victor might think he has the upper hand, but we’ll show him that we don’t back down.”Shawn nodded, forcing hims

Chapter 69

"Why do you look so pale, cousin," Norman taunted, casually leaning against the wall.Shawn froze midway in his step, hands clenching. There was no need for him even to turn around; the smugness of Norman's voice told him all it had to.Henry's jaw clenched as he turned to face Victor and Norman. "If you're here to gloat, save your breath. We're not interested."Victor laughed, far down the corridor. "Come on, Henry. Must I wish my dear brother and nephew luck for good luck? You both need it, after all,”Shawn spun on his heels, his eyes ablaze. "You thief! You stole our work, you" Shawn yelled wildly as if shaking with great wrath.Norman smirked, utterly unconcerned. "Steal? I don't know what you are on about, Shawn. Possibly just careless with your…ah…precious, precious documents.” Before Norman could get the words out, Shawn had already clutched him by the collar, pinning him against the wall. "You think this is a joke?!" Shawn snarled. "You broke into my office! You—""Shawn!" H

Chapter 70

"Let's talk about integrity," Richard said, the mere sound of his voice slashing the charged air like a razor. A cold shiver ran up Shawn's spine as the weight of those words made his palms grow damp. He turned to Henry, who sat ramrod-straight in his chair, his jaw clenched like granite. Victor's smirk faltered for a split second before he straightened in his seat, his expression morphing in a flash into one of feigned confidence. "What exactly are you talking about, Richard?" he demanded, his tone sharp. Richard's eyes, cold and unforgiving, settled on Victor. "You know precisely what I am talking about, Victor. The fact that your presentation wasn't originally yours but was stolen." The murmurs started to rise, low at first-like the rumble of thunder in a distance before the storm breaks. Edward Langston leaned back in his chair; his fingers steepled as he watched the chaos brew. "This is inappropriate, Mr. Wadsley," Edward interrupted him. "If you have accusations, I hope
