Chapter 41

"Apologize to the board," her father had said over breakfast, his voice not allowing for argument. "That's the only way to appease them and salvage this mess."Eva sat on the edge of her bed, brushing her hair in a slow rhythm as her mind was consumed with doubt. Her father's words played in her head in an endless echo: Forget Samantha. Focus on the company. As if she could forget Samantha, who held her life on a thin thread. As if he had some kind of plan, he wasn't sharing. There came a knock on the door. "Eva? Your mother packed you lunch. Come and get it before you leave," her father yelled through the door."Coming!" Eva set the brush down and stood, smoothing her skirt before heading downstairs.**********She didn't walk into the office until her nervous system was crispy. It seemed as though every corner she turned, she half anticipated Samantha to jump out from and proclaim another ultimatum or covert threat. But morning dragged on, and nothing happened. Nothing at all.She

Chapter 42

"Why is his phone switched off?" Eva muttered irritably, since for umpteen times she had tried calling Ryan's number. It played the automated voice message-ice-cold and impersonal. She drew the phone back from her ear and stared hard at the screen as if willing it to change. It didn't. He shut her out.She snatched her purse and keys, turning a blind eye as she did so to her assistant's inquisitive stare. The drive dragged interminably to his apartment while her mind wrestled with feelings of guilt and many questions in dire need of answers. What had she expected after everything that happened? He had all the reasons in this world to walk away. She finally arrived at his building in near deafening silence. She rapped on his door, and it reverberated down the hall."Ryan, it's me! Open up!"Nothing. This time, heavier knocks could be heard, with an elevated voice. "Ryan, please! I just want to talk!"Still nothing. She set her ear to the door, praying at least for the faintest sound of

Chapter 43

Eva steered through the gates, the mansion looming in front of her through the dark. She hadn't told Shawn she was returning tonight, and she wasn't even quite sure what reception she would get. Moonlight glazed the windows with soft luminescence, but all of the lights inside were off.Eva put the car in the park and clutched the wheel as she took a deep breath. "It's all right," she whispered to herself, "he's probably just sleeping. No big deal."She came outside into the cool night, pulling her suitcase along the driveway behind her. Immediately, the stillness enveloped her; night wrapped around her, it seemed, with the heaviness of some unvoiced threat. The sitting room inside was dead quiet; just a dark well of air.She felt her way cautiously, her fingers brushing the wall for the staircase. Her foot had just touched the first step when a sudden sound made her freeze-a ringing phone. Its shrill tone cut through the silence and sent a shiver of alarm. Before she could recover fr

Chapter 44

“Ava," Shawn said, his voice low, keen, like a blade slid between her ribs. "Tell me exactly what took place between you and Norman in Italy."It came as a bolt from blue to striking lightning in the air around them. Eva's fingers tightened on the spoon over her dessert. She willed her breathing to turn even, but her heart did otherwise. It hammered an uncanny rhythm against her chest."What?" she returned softer than she knew.“You heard me,” Shawn replied, his jaw clenched. The cool calculated expression in his eyes made her blood run cold. “Tell me exactly what happened, and don't you dare lie to me.”She swallowed hard as her mind contorted in ways to try and get herself out of this. Norman's name had been the minefield in their conversations. Shawn hated his cousin, and she knew that he did it with full awareness. Whatever game he was playing, Eva just could not allow it to blow up her carefully constructed facade. She could not allow it to destroy her.“Shawn, I…I really don't k

Chapter 45

“Didn’t think you’d have the guts to call me out again after last time,” Norman drawled, spinning the basketball lazily in his hands. The faint squeak of his sneakers against the court echoed in the crisp morning air. His smirk deepened as Shawn approached, his expression as sharp and cold as a winter storm.“Let’s just play,” Shawn replied curtly, already rolling up his sleeves.Norman laughed at that taunting, loud sound that grated upon nerves. "Oh, no, no, it is not just about this game, is it? I know that look on your face, you are deep in thought over something."Shawn's jaw was set, snatching the ball back out of Norman's hands. He commenced dribbling sure while his vision went ahead to the hoop. "Start playing or get out my way."Norman laughed but left Shawn his space. For some minutes, they played in strained silence; the only sound that was heard was that of the bouncing rubber and sometimes that of the swishing net. But Norman could never keep quiet for extended periods.“

Chapter 46

Shawn turned his phone and placed it on the desk, willing himself to ignore Norman's text. ‘He's probably playing games to get my attention, like Ava said. There's nothing else to prove, I met Ava as a virgin, and Norman is just being foolish.’ He stood up and walked towards Ava as she stood in front of the mirror in a short and pretty gown, hastily trying to pack her wavy hair in a messy bun. “Why are you staring at me?” She asked without looking in his direction. “You don't want me to take you?" Shawn leaned casually against the wall, but a lot bubbled just below the calm tone, as Eva rummaged through her purse. Finally, she looked up with a polite smile: "Really, Shawn, I'll be fine; I'm going to the mall, and I won't be there that long. Besides, you know you're exhausted after this afternoon; take some rest.”Shawn scrunched his face up, crossing his arms over his chest. "It's getting dark, and I don't want you to go alone."Eva shook her head, the tone light, yet firm. "Shawn

Chapter 47

Eva strode down the hallway of the museum with confidence; her heels lightly echoed off the vacant space. Shawn followed her, the sound of his footsteps quiet on the dimly lit hallway.Eva stepped into a gallery room; Shawn hung back just beyond the doorway, peering in. His blood ran cold as Norman leaned casually against one of the display cases, smirking firmly in place."Right on time," Norman drawled; there was a sharp thread of humour laced in his tone.Eva crossed her arms over herself, an instinctive and protective stance. "Cut the theatrics, Norman. What the hell do you think you're doing?"Shawn strained to hear, his fists clenched at his sides.Norman chuckled. The tone was light, laced with menace. "Isn't it obvious? I want Shawn to know the truth about us. Since you are trying to pretend that night never happened.” "There is no 'us,” Eva snapped in a low, fierce voice. "Whatever happened in the past is over. I'm happily married now. Get over it.”Norman's smirk spread wi

Chapter 48

"why was the truth so hard to tell?" Shawn muttered, staring at the blinking cursor on his screen. He leaned back into his office chair and ran a hand through his hair. It felt as though there was tangible frustration hanging in the air.He listened to the words that were playing like recording inside his brain in repetition, to the previous night of Ava's cool entrance into the house, placing easy smiles as she unpacked her things and telling that lie with so much confidence and ease. It was too hard to believe and he couldn't help but think about it and feel hurt with every second. "Where were you tonight, Ava?" he asked."I told you, I went to the mall," she said, cool, with nary a crack.Yet, Shawn had known better. He heard everything, saw everything. She was at the museum with Norman, and instead of explaining the truth and making him understand, she lied, again. He slammed his laptop shut and clenched his jaw. "What else did you lie about, Ava?" he whispered out loud. His tru

Chapter 49

Norman paced the length of his father's study, his mind racing with every step. While opposite him, he could hear his father, Victor Darlington, speaking in a deep and measured voice. “You’ve been quiet lately, Norman. Too quiet.” Victor leaned back in his leather chair, his hands steepled in front of him, his gaze sharp and calculating. “I haven’t heard any reports of a fallout between Ava and Shawn. What's going on?” His mouth stretched taut, stretching out a slight smirk, but the tension in his gaze pulsed straight into them, and Norman couldn't hide this; thus, his father caught it. He came to a stop in his pacing, turned around to his father, his tone casual yet laced with a touch of aggression. “Father, I’ve been working on it. You’ll get your fallout soon enough. I’ve played my big card already.” Norman’s voice dropped, his eyes glinting with something darker. “Shawn and Ava’s marriage is teetering on the edge. Trust me.” Victor's eyes hardened, and he leaned forward in

Chapter 50

"Victor."Henry Darlington's suave, modulated voice cut through the hum of conversation at the exclusive cocktail party. Victor Darlington, in mid-reach toward a fresh glass of bourbon, jerked to a halt before he turned around to a grin that was just one layer over too bright."Henry," Victor answered him in return, false and cordial. "What a surprise. Never thought you'd be here."Henry took another step forward, his suit impeccably tailored, eyes intent on his brother. "I could say the same. Though, I am not surprised to find you sniffing out the same opportunity as myself."Victor laughed softly-a laugh that did little to warm his eyes. "Come now, brother. Let's not be quite so cynical. It's a public affair. Surely, we can manage to get along for one evening without our usual. disputes."Henry's teeth set into a grinding position. "We shall see about that."Before either of them could say more, the voice sliced through. "Ah, here you are, gentlemen!"The remarks of Victor and Henr
