CHAPTER 11: BACK HOME

Around 3am the next day, Kristie was standing by the window in their room and looking out. She was awake and restless. Her husband was not the type to keep late nights. She could feel that something was wrong. But there was no way to figure out what it was. She had tried to call Ryan many times. The calls were never answered. It was freaking her out. After a while, she decided to place a different call. She scrolled through her contacts and found the number of her father-in-law, Mr Blake, and dialed it. One ring…two rings…three rings… the call connected. “Hello, Kristie,” the elderly man said as he took the call. “Why do you call me at this time of the night?”Kristie cocked her hair. “I'm sorry, dad. It's just…it's just that—” Mr Blake cut in. “What is going on? Did you have a fight with my son?” “No,” she replied. “That's not it.”“What is it, Kristie? Tell me why you've called me at three in the morning. I have to get back to sleep.” She cleared her throat. “I think…I think h

CHAPTER 12: A LIE

Ryan's head began to do maths. He had told a lie to wriggle his way out. He needed to tell another lie to cover up his tracks. Kristie folded her arms. “You look surprised,” she said. “Or should I say… shocked? You even spilled your coffee.” Ryan said nothing for a while. He simply got out of the bed and placed the cup of coffee on the side table. While Kristie watched him, he walked to the bathroom and washed his face. Then, he returned to her. “Are you going to keep mute like this?” Kristie queried. “You are saying absolutely nothing in your defence.”Ryan looked at her. “What has Erik said to you that you suddenly doubt the words of your husband?” Kristie cocked her hair. “Does it really matter at this point? Fine. If you must know, Erik said this client is a guy. What did you say to me last night? You said it was a freaking woman. A freaking woman, Ryan! He was even surprised when I asked about the client. The innocent man was covering the tracks of his friend.” Ryan still ke

CHAPTER 13: HAZY MORNING

Ava was up and dressed for work. She wore a perfectly ironed pair of black pants. Her blue shirt tucked into it properly. On one hand of the couch she was sitting on was her black jacket. A laptop was on her lap and she punched commands into it. She grabbed the cup of coffee on a nearby stool and sipped it before placing it back. Arnold walked into the living room. He was dressed to face the activities of the day. A white shirt and black pants. “Good morning, sunshine,” he greeted Ava. Ava stopped what she was doing and looked at him. “Good morning, Arnold,” she said with a partial smirk on her face. “I already made this clear enough to you, haven't I?” Arnold stroked his jaw. “What, exactly?” Ava forced a smile. She knew Arnold was trying to get to her emotions. But that was never going to work. He was there because of business. And that was it. “You have one job, Arnold.” “And that is what I am doing, Ava,” Arnold replied. “Can't you see it?” Ava placed the laptop by her si

CHAPTER 14: NO SECOND CHANCE

Ava didn't flinch. She just watched him as he walked up to her. “Ava,” he called her and stood in front of her. “Good morning, Mister,” she said with a smile. It pained Ryan that she addressed him that way. It was clear she was trying to be formal with him. “Come on, Ava,” he said. “You know my name. You should call me that. I'm not a stranger to you.” She smiled. “I believe you were headed somewhere. You have no business with me. I advise you to keep moving.” Ryan cocked his hair with a little bit of frustration on his face. Before seeing her, all he could think of was the possible reason for which his father sounded the way he did earlier on. But at the moment, it no longer mattered. Ava was all that mattered to him. “Ava, please. Just give me the opportunity to talk to you properly. We need to talk. It's very important that we do.” She crossed her legs and locked her fingers over her knee cap. “What makes you think so, Ryan?” She asked. “What exactly do we have to talk abo

CHAPTER 15: A HELPING HAND

Ava stood up and walked to him. Then, she hugged him. Had it not been for him, she would have still been the miserable girl everyone knew years ago. Aaron was more of a big uncle to her. “How have you been, Miss Woods?” He asked her. She grinned broadly. “Well, as you can see, I'm doing great. Please, come with me.” She gestured that he should follow her. They walked to a set of sofas at the extreme of the office and sat down opposite each other. “What would you like to drink?” She asked in a friendly tone. Aaron smiled. “I haven't come here for a drink. I'm fine.” Ava adjusted her position. “Is everything okay? You are supposed to be with my father.” Aaron smiled. “Well, not anymore.” She winced. “What do you mean to say? Have you resigned?” “Maybe,” he replied. Ava smiled. Aaron was of age and according to reports, he already served her father for over twenty years of his life. It was only thoughtful of him to want to give himself a big break. Ava crossed her legs and cla

CHAPTER 16: ANGRY FATHER

When Ryan finally got to his family home, he knew he had wasted time on the road. Running into Ava was totally unexpected. It shattered him for a while. He had to sit on one of those benches to gather his thoughts in one piece. He drove to the garage and parked his car. Then, he got out and headed straight into the house. His sister, Molly, was idling with her phone on the couch when he walked. Seeing her made his thoughts click. It was Molly that invited Ava to the event that night. She made the whole thing worse for him. “Ryan,” she called him with a broad smile on her face. “Good morning.” She got up and hugged him. Hesitantly, he reciprocated the embrace. After all, there was nothing he could do about the situation. “You look flushed, Ryan,” Molly said as she pulled away. “Is everything okay?” Ryan managed a smile. “Yes, dear. Just work.” “You should take a break,” she opined. “I will consider that. Where's dad?”“Right here,” Mr Blake replied from the stairs. Ryan looked

CHAPTER 17: A WAY OUT

Ryan got to the office with a great deal of frustration. His head was spinning. He thought he had it all under control. But unfortunately, he didn't. Ava was really out to get him. Not long after he settled down, he called his secretary in. The lady walked in and greeted him. “What exactly have you been doing?” He queried her. “How could we not know that the mega deal has been awarded to another company?” The lady looked away. “My sincere apologies, sir. It happened so fast. I think they did it this morning.” Ryan cocked his hair and exhaled heavily. He knew he was not supposed to query the lady for something he should have known about. “Just go, please,” he said to her. The lady was hesitant. It looked like there was something she still wanted to tell him. “I just asked you to go,” Ryan said in a displeased tone. The lady cleared her throat. “Sorry, sir. I don't know if this is the right time to let you know about this.” Ryan stood up and pressed his hands against the table.

CHAPTER 18: A TALK AT THE OFFICE

Ava finished signing a few documents and called in Sharon. Soon, Sharon was with her. “You called me, ma'am,” Sharon said. Ava inclined her posture. “How's the turn up? Are you done yet?” Sharon nodded her head. “Yes, ma'am. I've secretly leaked the information to some top people. Ryan's family and his in-laws will not be able to figure it out.” Ava smiled and nodded her head in satisfaction. Ryan was still battling with the fact that a small company like Exon got the deal ahead of them. However, he didn't know Ava had more plans. Ryan's plans of launching the new company will be in shambles. On that same day, she would be having her welcome party. Ryan would end up being alone on that day. “That's okay,” Ava said. “You may go.” Sharon was about to take her leave when Ava had a thought. “Uhm.. Sharon,” she called her secretary. “Yes, ma'am,” Sharon responded and turned. “Is there…a problem?”“Exon is a small company,” Ava said. “Ryan Blake that I know isn't the type to back do

CHAPTER 19: PARADISE RESORTS AND SUITES

Hours later, when night had come, Ava was done playing with her children and took them to bed. She pecked them on their foreheads. “Goodnight, pumpkins,” she said with a cute smile on her face. “We want to sleep with you tonight, mom,” Adrian said. “Yes, mom,” Adrianna added. Ava grinned at them. She would want to do that. No matter how demanding her work was, she always did well to be the best mom to them. “Sweethearts, mom has to attend to work now. But she will make it up to you guys, okay?” Somehow, the kids agreed and she left the room. She wasted no time in taking her bath and getting dressed for tonight. It was only a matter of time before she was done getting ready. When she walked into the living room, Arnold was there. On seeing her, he got up from the couch with a dazed look. “Oh my goodness, Ava. You look damn hot.” Ava smiled. She was wearing a short gown. Not skimpy, though. But it was well fitted and showed how beautiful she was. “Thank you, Arnold,” she repli

CHAPTER 20: A CHANCE TO EXPLAIN

Ava saw him and kept her cool. But Ryan? He lost it. He stood up from his seat. “You.. you came here with her,” he stuttered. “Yes, I did,” Edward replied. “I just had to.” Edward stood up and walked to Ava. Then, he bowed his head to her. They spoke in whispers before he left the place. Ryan could not believe his eyes. It was clear enough that Ava was out to get him. Not even in his wildest imaginations could he have imagined that she would be there with them.He walked to her. “May I?” He asked if he could sit in the couch facing her. Ava smiled. “You may.” Ryan sat down and couldn't say a word. Staring at her like that, his heart got filled up with regrets again. All he could think about was a life with her. He ruined the happy relationship they had. Ava dropped the glass of wine in her hand and clasped both hands together. Then, she cleared her throat. “Mr Ryan Blake, it has gotten to my attention that you have your interest in the Exon company. Oh no. The deal, right? Tha
