Prologue

It wasn’t real. Any of it. I was taken for a fool. Kent—he pretended to love me. The realization was sinking in slowly, but then why did it feel so real? Why did he save me? Kept me from leaving his castle? Pretend to love me. Or even ask me to live here. There had to be something I didn’t know. Or was Kent always just this cruel? He picked Marianna now, even after everything we had together. Of course he did. She could be a proper wolf mate for him. Me? I couldn’t give him anything. I wasn’t a werewolf. I may be a daughter to a werewolf, the only female alpha on our cluster of land, Astoria, but I was nothing. I couldn’t transform. Not even when the moonlight was strong. It’s always been like this. I was my mother’s biggest secret. Hidden away. Not accepted as part of her clan. It never bothered me. Even when I felt it made my mother love me less but now as Kent laughed and snickered at my hope for our future, it broke me. Before I had always felt alone and useless. Then Kent came a

Chapter 1

Mother was in a tizzy. “Clean the shelves and tables. Get the ceilings and walls too.” She had shouted all week. Not to me. I was hidden away in the cottage attic, as I usually was anytime a potential new mate was coming to see one of my sisters. She was yelling at Marianna, her now only eligible daughter. I was just watching the drama unfold from a little hole I had created on the attic floor that led to the cottage living room. When I put one of my eyes on it, and closed the other one, I could see everything very clearly. “You are not to move. Talk. Or even breathe when Kent is here.” My mother said to me when she found out Kent, a werewolf with the biggest clan, was interested in seeing Marianna. “Mama, I cleaned all the china, and swatted the sofa. You won’t find any of our wolf hairs or real hairs. Can Jezebel and I go out now? She hasn’t been out since the incident.” I heard Marianna, my light, my love, my sister, ask my mother. Only her red hair was visible to me but I coul

Chapter 2

Kent, an Alpha, probably tired and under pressure of taking care of his clans. He probably doesn’t get to enjoy the simpler things in life like the sunsets. So this was why my sister Marianna was sauntering around in her room in an orange dress which reflected back golden light when she moved, because Marianna was right, I always knew what these werewolves liked. The dress was perfect. Marianna looked perfect. Kent won’t know what hit him. “Mother,” I lazily called. When she didn’t answer I yelled, “Mother, get your butt up here now!” My mother rushed in. “Wow, Marianna. You look amazing!” My mother said with astonishment in her voice.“Doesn’t she.” I added. “Yes,” my mothers tone changed when she responded to me. “I want you out of the house today. When Kent is here.” “Why! You usually just make me hide in my room. I’ll do the same today. I won’t make a sound like you asked me to.” I pleaded.“No, he is an alpha. It’s too dangerous. Go to the market.” She shot back.“Mother, I

Chapter 3

I hopped up and made my way to the window I had just climbed, but I wasn’t fast enough. Kent and his wolf were at my door and I took Kent all in. He was taller from this angle, almost too tall for my door, and his face less innocent. The wolf was also bigger. Fatter. Fluffier. “Out!” He yelled at me. Almost like I was his dog. I moved away from the window and climbed down my bed. “I am the help.” I lied, a lie my mother alway told me to tell.Kent’s handsome face twisted into a smile. I should have hated it because I knew he meant it to be evil, but it made him even more handsome. It seemed playful rather than menacing. At least to me. “Max—“ he snapped his fingers again and the wolf came closer to me. He circled me like he did Marianna and as he did, my mother and Marianna joined the circus.“Jezebel, what are you doing here?” She yelled. “Alpha Kent, she is—““The help?” Kent finished for my mother. Max meanwhile was on his second full circle. “So?” Kent asked the wolf. Max le

Chapter 4

Kent’s POV I was honestly expecting a fierce, charming, mysterious woman, and all I saw was a scared—albeit somewhat bratty—girl. No doubt, it was because she had no idea who she was. All the mother’s doing. Though if I spawned one of those things, I’d keep it a secret too. I may not even let it live. Once the noise of the two dimwitted girls left, I snapped at Max, so he could leave too. He followed my instructions as he always did, and once it was just Madam Amelia and I, I let me guard down. “On top of everything, she is half human? You know her kind are not allowed in Astoria.” I informed her. Perhaps she was under the impression that Astoria, which my great-grandfather founded, allowed humans just because we took a vow not to hurt them. Well some of us took that vow. Others, like my dear brother, didn’t care. “She is the safest here.” Madam Amelia shot back. For a werewolf in her old age, she was quite a thing to witness. She had kindness in her eye, but her actions an

Chapter 5

“This isn’t fair. You can’t do this.” I cried. My face was buried into my purple bed covers that were getting stained with tears. While Marianna, who’s lap my head was resting on, stroked my hair. The revelation from earlier was still fogging up my brain but the news that came after was worse. After the beaded bracelet on my arms turned green, I rushed home, expecting my mother to explain things further. I was a mess. Confused. Lost about who I was. In disbelief. Mother did no such thing. As soon as I walked in, I was told I had two hours to pack and be ready to leave. Kent was waiting for me in the living room. “You hate me so much that you want to kick me out?” I tried using guilt to get her to stop. “Mother, does she have to go? I know you said she was to go to the castle to learn the ins and outs for me so I am ready to be his mate, but can’t I just go do that?”“It’s improper. Full moon for a wolf is no laughing matter. Especially a male wolf. Kent doesn’t want to lose control
