“Wow,” I said and it echoed back to me. I was in the foyer of the castle. It was a long hallway and alongside the walls, gold-framed paintings of old men hung lazily. Kent and Max were in front of me, leading the way.

“Max, I am sure you are tired.” Kent snapped his fingers and a giggling young girl ran up to him.

“Ser,” she bowed.

“Clothes for Max.” He simply said. The girl disappeared and another appeared in her place with a set of clothes. “Turn the other way,” Kent said to me.  I did as I was told. So did the other girl.

“Max release,” Kent commanded, I slightly turned my head to see the dog, whose back I was riding a few moments ago, reassembled as a man. He was skinny, short, and looked tired. His eyes were dull, but kind. His hair was dirty red and shaggy but not in a purposeful way like Kent's. He looked quite messy. The rags Kent had ordered—loose brown pants and an even looser white blouse—didn’t help Max any. “Take her to her room. Lock her in there till we can figure something out.”

“What?” I asked. Max just bowed and grabbed me by the arm. His touch was firm but not painful. He led me up the massive O-shaped staircase picking the right side as our path.

I looked back at Kent. What was his purpose in bringing me here? I thought I was here to help prepare Marianna. That seemed to be a lie he told us. Or was it a lie my mother told us?

I was guided up and up as we ran into another set of long winding staircases. We didn’t stop till we hit the end of the staircase, at least 14 stories tall. When we did stop, it was in front of a tiny door. He opened the door.

I expected the room to be small, however, it was a large circular room, with several windows and a maroon canopy bed in the middle. I walked towards one of the windows to find I had a bird’s eye view of the green mountains and the river. It looked beautiful in the view of the sunsets. Pink, orange, and purple colors danced behind the forest green mountains.

“It’s beautiful!” I voiced.

“It’s also inescapable. Get inside.” Max demanded.

“I don’t understand. Why?” I asked. I still didn’t know what my actual reason for being here was.

“I don’t have the answer for you either. Really, you should blame your mother for keeping you so sheltered.” Max said. “Dinner will be brought up shortly by one of the girls.”

“Girls?”

“One of Kent’s girls. I am not sure which one, but she will be your handmaid.”

“He has girls?” I said in an almost whisper.

Max either didn’t hear me or pretended not to, because he just left me. Alone. In this very pretty, very large, room.

It wasn’t freedom but finally, the four walls I usually stared at were different. Finally, there was a beautiful view I could stare at for days without having to do anything else. So I did.

I grabbed a pillow from the bed and rested it on the wall of the windowsill. Thankfully the edge was large enough for me to sit with folded knees. Then I looked out, maybe for hours but it felt like minutes. The pink sky turned into a dark blue, then eventually fully black. The moon was high and bright today, causing the light waves in the river to glisten. It felt like silk and diamonds gliding around the floor. Each wave made the glint dance at a different pace.

I didn't know what time it was when I heard a knock on my door, but it did two things. First, it reminded me that I was at Blackwood Castle. Second, I remembered I wasn't here at my free will.

“Come in,” I said, because what were my other options?

The door slowly swung open.

“Food, my lady.” a pink-faced young girl with dirty blond hair tied up in a slick ponytail, and a flowery apron on her plain white dress, said. She was carrying a tray of food. Chicken legs, a sandwich, soup, a glass of milk, and a plate of pudding—a piece of chocolate cake.

“That’s more food than I’ve had in a week.” I shot back.

“Sorry, my lady. You must eat it all. Alpha Kent’s command.” she determinedly said.

“And what happens if I don't?” I argued back.

“Nothing good ma’am. Nothing good,” she whispered. Her eyes were shining with fear.

I decided that she wasn't worth arguing with. None of this was her fault. In fact, she and I were in the same boat. Under Kent’s ruling. I grabbed the tray from her hands.

“Thank you—umm what's your name?”

“Madeline. I am one of Kent’s girls and your handmaid. Please shake this anytime you need me.” Madeline handed me a blue beaded bracelet. I took it, but stared at it for a while, not because the bracelet was anything curious, my mother had handed me several different ones depending on how she wanted to keep a watch on me, but because I had a question in mind. I just wasn't sure I was allowed to ask it.

“What do you mean by one of his girls?” I slowly asked anyway.

“Every month, when the moon is full, Alpha picks one of the girls to share the night with him.” she giggled as she said this.

“That's disguising.” I cried. “He forces you to–”

“It's not forced. We fought for this honor.” Madeline shot back.

“That's because he brainwashed you.” I scoffed.

“My lady, I may be your handmaid but I am loyal to Alpha Kent and I will not hear you mock his clan. He is the best Alpha we've had, and I will not hear another bad word about him.” Madeline strongly said before stomping out, leaving me and this obscene amount of food alone.

It wasn’t real. Any of it. I was taken for a fool. Kent—he pretended to love me. The realization was sinking in slowly, but then why did it feel so real? Why did he save me? Kept me from leaving his castle? Pretend to love me. Or even ask me to live here. There had to be something I didn’t know. Or was Kent always just this cruel? He picked Marianna now, even after everything we had together. Of course he did. She could be a proper wolf mate for him. Me? I couldn’t give him anything. I wasn’t a werewolf. I may be a daughter to a werewolf, the only female alpha on our cluster of land, Astoria, but I was nothing. I couldn’t transform. Not even when the moonlight was strong. It’s always been like this. I was my mother’s biggest secret. Hidden away. Not accepted as part of her clan. It never bothered me. Even when I felt it made my mother love me less but now as Kent laughed and snickered at my hope for our future, it broke me. Before I had always felt alone and useless. Then Kent came a

Mother was in a tizzy. “Clean the shelves and tables. Get the ceilings and walls too.” She had shouted all week. Not to me. I was hidden away in the cottage attic, as I usually was anytime a potential new mate was coming to see one of my sisters. She was yelling at Marianna, her now only eligible daughter. I was just watching the drama unfold from a little hole I had created on the attic floor that led to the cottage living room. When I put one of my eyes on it, and closed the other one, I could see everything very clearly. “You are not to move. Talk. Or even breathe when Kent is here.” My mother said to me when she found out Kent, a werewolf with the biggest clan, was interested in seeing Marianna. “Mama, I cleaned all the china, and swatted the sofa. You won’t find any of our wolf hairs or real hairs. Can Jezebel and I go out now? She hasn’t been out since the incident.” I heard Marianna, my light, my love, my sister, ask my mother. Only her red hair was visible to me but I coul

Kent, an Alpha, probably tired and under pressure of taking care of his clans. He probably doesn’t get to enjoy the simpler things in life like the sunsets. So this was why my sister Marianna was sauntering around in her room in an orange dress which reflected back golden light when she moved, because Marianna was right, I always knew what these werewolves liked. The dress was perfect. Marianna looked perfect. Kent won’t know what hit him. “Mother,” I lazily called. When she didn’t answer I yelled, “Mother, get your butt up here now!” My mother rushed in. “Wow, Marianna. You look amazing!” My mother said with astonishment in her voice.“Doesn’t she.” I added. “Yes,” my mothers tone changed when she responded to me. “I want you out of the house today. When Kent is here.” “Why! You usually just make me hide in my room. I’ll do the same today. I won’t make a sound like you asked me to.” I pleaded.“No, he is an alpha. It’s too dangerous. Go to the market.” She shot back.“Mother, I

I hopped up and made my way to the window I had just climbed, but I wasn’t fast enough. Kent and his wolf were at my door and I took Kent all in. He was taller from this angle, almost too tall for my door, and his face less innocent. The wolf was also bigger. Fatter. Fluffier. “Out!” He yelled at me. Almost like I was his dog. I moved away from the window and climbed down my bed. “I am the help.” I lied, a lie my mother alway told me to tell.Kent’s handsome face twisted into a smile. I should have hated it because I knew he meant it to be evil, but it made him even more handsome. It seemed playful rather than menacing. At least to me. “Max—“ he snapped his fingers again and the wolf came closer to me. He circled me like he did Marianna and as he did, my mother and Marianna joined the circus.“Jezebel, what are you doing here?” She yelled. “Alpha Kent, she is—““The help?” Kent finished for my mother. Max meanwhile was on his second full circle. “So?” Kent asked the wolf. Max le

Kent’s POV I was honestly expecting a fierce, charming, mysterious woman, and all I saw was a scared—albeit somewhat bratty—girl. No doubt, it was because she had no idea who she was. All the mother’s doing. Though if I spawned one of those things, I’d keep it a secret too. I may not even let it live. Once the noise of the two dimwitted girls left, I snapped at Max, so he could leave too. He followed my instructions as he always did, and once it was just Madam Amelia and I, I let me guard down. “On top of everything, she is half human? You know her kind are not allowed in Astoria.” I informed her. Perhaps she was under the impression that Astoria, which my great-grandfather founded, allowed humans just because we took a vow not to hurt them. Well some of us took that vow. Others, like my dear brother, didn’t care. “She is the safest here.” Madam Amelia shot back. For a werewolf in her old age, she was quite a thing to witness. She had kindness in her eye, but her actions an

“This isn’t fair. You can’t do this.” I cried. My face was buried into my purple bed covers that were getting stained with tears. While Marianna, who’s lap my head was resting on, stroked my hair. The revelation from earlier was still fogging up my brain but the news that came after was worse. After the beaded bracelet on my arms turned green, I rushed home, expecting my mother to explain things further. I was a mess. Confused. Lost about who I was. In disbelief. Mother did no such thing. As soon as I walked in, I was told I had two hours to pack and be ready to leave. Kent was waiting for me in the living room. “You hate me so much that you want to kick me out?” I tried using guilt to get her to stop. “Mother, does she have to go? I know you said she was to go to the castle to learn the ins and outs for me so I am ready to be his mate, but can’t I just go do that?”“It’s improper. Full moon for a wolf is no laughing matter. Especially a male wolf. Kent doesn’t want to lose control

“We are walking there?” I wined. “I travel transformed usually.”“Oh I have an idea, why don’t you transform and run back to your castle, and I just stay here? Win-win.” I sarcastically said. He glared back at me. “How long is the walk?” “Two hours if we cut through the forest.” “I am not allowed in the forest,” I said.“I am allowing it. My permission is the only one you need now.” He barked. “My permission is the only one you need now.” I mocked. “Start moving!” I barked back.He started walking without arguing back. So fast I could barely keep up. “Wait! Wait up.” I yelled. “Wait for me!” He slowed down, giving me a chance to catch up to him. He was right at the entrance of the forest which wasn’t far from our cottage. “Don’t ever, ever, command me like that again.” He said. His black-red eyes are more red than black now. “I wasn’t commanding,” I said, taken aback. “I was just joking.”“I want you to quietly follow behind me. Not another word till we get to the castle.”
