Kent, an Alpha, probably tired and under pressure of taking care of his clans. He probably doesn’t get to enjoy the simpler things in life like the sunsets. So this was why my sister Marianna was sauntering around in her room in an orange dress which reflected back golden light when she moved, because Marianna was right, I always knew what these werewolves liked. The dress was perfect. Marianna looked perfect. Kent won’t know what hit him.

“Mother,” I lazily called. When she didn’t answer I yelled, “Mother, get your butt up here now!”

My mother rushed in.

“Wow, Marianna. You look amazing!” My mother said with astonishment in her voice.

“Doesn’t she.” I added.

“Yes,” my mothers tone changed when she responded to me. “I want you out of the house today. When Kent is here.”

“Why! You usually just make me hide in my room. I’ll do the same today. I won’t make a sound like you asked me to.” I pleaded.

“No, he is an alpha. It’s too dangerous. Go to the market.” She shot back.

“Mother, I was getting yelled at for attending yesterday. You know he is here to find a mate, not to hunt humans. I am sure as an alpha he follows the rule of not hurting a human.” I tried to reason with her.

“You are not a human.”

“Well I am not a werewolf either.” I matter-in-fact my said.

“Here, take this. When the colors change to green, come home.” My mother handed me a black beaded bracelet.

I sighed but my mother’s face told me, no matter what I said, I was not going to win, so I decided to grab the bracelet, a shawl from the hook by the door, and walked out.

Most werewolves—women werewolves—who in Astoria wore gowns, would find it a deterrent to climb up piles but I have no shame. We have acres of land to ourselves. All ladies. So I hiked my skirt up to my thigh and began my climb up.

When I reached the circular and small attic window, I lunged myself up and clutched my hands onto their wooden edge. I hung there for a bit till I used all the strength I had in my hands to dive into my room, luckily I landed on my bed. Though it did make a loud creek. Hoping my mother didn’t hear, I softly got off the bed and tiptoed to my peephole.

I couldn’t see Kent’s face but I saw his shaggy—but somehow all in the right places—jet black hair. I could also see he was wearing a white fur coat.

“Thank you for having us Madam Amelia.” Kent said with a bow.

“Of course.” I couldn’t see my mother but I heard her voice and it was quivering. “Does he have to stay like this?”

I roamed my eyes around and gasped as I spotted a black dog—no,not a dog, a wolf. I had never seen a wolf in broad daylight. My gasp may have been loud because Kent’s head turned up to locate the sound. This enabled me to see his face. It was more innocent than I expected. His face was paper white with flushed pink cheeks. His nose was almost as buttoned as Marianna, but his jaw was where you could see the alpha. It moved as he looked around. It was sharp enough to cut someone’s neck on.

“Max was my fathers beta. He is mine now. He tried to over take my father as an alpha and was punished to stay in wolf form unless given permission. And I don’t give him permission in front of strangers.” Informed Kent.

“Oh—well please come in. Take a seat.” My mother almost broke her back as she bowed and led them to our couches, “‘Marianna, sweetheart, come out here.”

I saw Marianna orange fabric before I saw her nervous face. She bowed as well and took a seat across from Kent.

“Hello Alpha Kent.” She stuttered.

“Beautiful. Everything I heard about your daughter is proven true. She is a vision.” Kent said. Then he snapped his fingers. The wolf under him left his side and circled Marianna, he whimpered, then came back to Kent. Kent nodded at him.

“Would you like supper, Alpha Kent? I’ve made turkey legs. Freshly caught.” Marianna excitedly said.

“Who caught it?” Kent asked.

“J—“ Marianna started but my mother gave her a warning look. “I did.” She finished.

“You don’t look the type.” Kent said, his voice cold. He snapped his fingers again, the wolf began roaming all over again.

“What—what is he doing?” My mother asked.

“Patrolling. Pay no attention to him.” Kent responded back. “Now, I want to see when I can take Marianna back to Blackwood Castle. I’d like to get started right away on making our cubs.” Kent said, and I could see Marianna’s face turning pink. Though she wasn’t embarrassed, she was excited. I, however , had a funny feeling. I usually got this feeling while around male wolves—grant I was not around them much. All I knew was, he was lying. I could prove it. I wasn’t sure if I was right, but all I knew was, I didn’t want my sister to go with him. He didn’t want my sister to go with him.

“You can take her as soon as you’d like Alpha Kent.” My mother’s voice went three octaves higher, and it almost sounded like she was giggling with every word she spoke.

Meanwhile, Kent’s wolf was roaming back and forward in our living room. I could barely keep up with his movement.

The feeling of deceit grows harder. I wanted to go down and inspect this man myself. Find out his intentions. I had half a mind to do so if it wasn’t for my mothers warning. I was already hiding out where I wasn’t supposed to be.

“Fantastic.” I heard Kent shout. “I’ll agree as soon as Max has checked your cottage out. You see, to start a relationship, I have to make sure you aren’t lying to me Madam Amelia., and I have a feeling you are.” Kent’s voice sounded like honey. Like he was elated that he had caught my mother in a lie.

“I assure you. This is no such lie.” My mother nervously said.

“Max, up!” Kent yelled, he looked up and his dark eyes met my blue ones, and then I heard scratching at my door.

He was taller from this angle, almost too tall for my door, and his face less innocent. The wolf was also bigger. Fatter. Fluffier. “Out!” He yelled at me. Almost like I was his dog. I moved away from the window and climbed down my bed. “I am the help.” I lied, a lie my mother alway told me to tell.Kent’s handsome face twisted into a smile. I should have hated it because I knew he meant it to be evil, but it made him even more handsome. It seemed playful rather than menacing. At least to me. “Max—“ he snapped his fingers again and the wolf came closer to me. He circled me like he did Marianna and as he did, my mother and Marianna joined the circus.“Jezebel, what are you doing here?” She yelled. “Alpha Kent, she is—““The help?” Kent finished for my mother. Max meanwhile was on his second full circle. “So?” Kent asked the wolf. Max le

Kent’s POV I was honestly expecting a fierce, charming, mysterious woman, and all I saw was a scared—albeit somewhat bratty—girl. No doubt, it was because she had no idea who she was. Once the noise of the two dimwitted girls left, I snapped at Max, so he could leave too. You know her kind are not allowed in Astoria.” I informed her. Perhaps she was under the impression that Astoria, which my great-grandfather founded, allowed humans just because we took a vow not to hurt them. Well some of us took that vow. Others, like my dear brother, didn’t care. “She is the safest here.” Madam Amelia shot back. For a werewolf in her old age, she was quite a thing to witness. She had kindness in her eye, but her actions an
