They continued to stare at each other without moving, but a squawk from the bird behind them startled them both. They instinctively jumped back in opposite directions, only to bounce against the barrier Aurora had created. Once again, they found themselves colliding into each other’s arms, using the other for support.Quickly, they straightened up, neither of them looking at the other. Aurora shakily removed the barrier, and they both moved away from the bird, which remained rooted to the spot, staring at them. When it attempted to fly closer, they took another step back.The bird seemed to study them, unmoving for a moment, as though in disbelief. Then, with a sound that resembled a scoff, it dropped something on the ground. Aurora and Maverick both glanced down to see a piece of paper lying on the forest floor. Maverick walked around, holding the tiny crystals that Layla had given him in his left hand. She had told him to use them to fight against witches in case they were the ones who had held Aurora captive.It was for his own protection before he got one from Aurora. Apparently, it was over Layla’s dead body that she would let him go fight a bunch of witches without something to protect him.He stopped when he was right in front of the pole that she was tied to. There was noise outside, and when he turned, he was able to make out the presence of some men on the other side of the shed.He listened attentively and was able to make out the presence of four men with his heightened sense of hearing. They were walking close or around the shed, but there must have been others around too, given that there was some talking in the far distance, probably toward the main entrance of wherever this place was.He turned to face Aurora and flinched when she suddenly peeled her eyes open. She stared at him
