Chapter 1

Lenore's POV“We need to talk, Dad. I faced my dad in our big, old house, filled with the smell of books and wood. I took a deep breath and said, “Dad, I want to make my way. I don’t want people to think I’m just a rich kid.”My dad looked at me, surprised. “Lenore, you have everything here. Why go out into the tough world?”“Because I need to show that I’m more than just a heiress. I want to work for my success,” I replied, feeling strong. We argued back and forth, our voices echoing in the room. But in the end, my dad’s eyes softened. “Okay, Lenore. If you want to learn, go ahead.” He gave me a card. “Start with this company. Show them what you’re made of.”I looked at the card—Knight Industries. It belonged to Dad's friend, so I heard. “But Dad, I can't work at a friend's company; this isn't what I want to do.“The only way I can let you have your way is if you apply there. More objections, and I'd have you grounded," my dad said without looking at me.I felt like my dad knew somet

Chapter 2

Dilemma at WorkMy heart pounded as I clutched the application tag. The woman’s words echoed in my ears, “You can’t leave with that.” Mr. Donovan’s eyes were still on me, his gaze sharp and suspicious. I had to act fast. With a quick smile, I handed the tag back. “Silly me,” I laughed, trying to sound casual. “Thanks for catching that.” As soon as the tag was off, I darted through the crowd. I could feel Mr. Donovan’s eyes bored into my back, but I didn’t dare look.Once outside, I raced to my car, tucked away in a corner where it wouldn’t draw attention. I slipped inside, my breaths coming in quick gasps. I was safe, for now. But that was too close. I couldn’t risk being recognized again.Pulling out my phone, I called Layla. “You won’t believe what just happened,” I said, my voice a mix of fear and excitement.Layla’s concern was immediate. “Are you okay? What’s going on?”I spilled the story; my words tumbled out. I told Layla about the interview, about the mysterious Trent Knight,

Chapter 3

A Sabotaged Plan“Who is she, Trent, and what is she doing here? She walked towards me and looked at me like she wanted to devour me.“Yvonne, what are you doing here? Trent turned back and walked towards her.I stood aside and looked at her. Who was she? Could she be the person Trent was engaged to?“Did you recruit a female secretary baby? I told you I wanted a male one; you know how much I hate you being around other girls apart from me, she said aloud like she wanted me to hear.‘“You have to fire her," she added. Trent just sat and said nothing to her whinings. He looked exhausted, and I left them to talk.“What does she mean he has to fire me? I thought about what his so-called fiance said. What was that about? What does she mean he has to fire me?I scoffed and packed my bags ready to leave for the day. I thought about going back to Trent's office and having him inform him that I was leaving for the day, but I decided against it.The night was long as I was tired and hurried to

Chapter 4

A big misunderstandingThe conference room was silent immediately. I shouted.“Trent, you can't have that; it could be poisoned,” I said and ran towards him, slapping the cup away from his hands.“What is she doing? Everyone whispered to themselves.“Lena, what is this you're doing? Trent got up from his seat and looked at me with a flustered face.“I'm sorry, but you can't have the wine, sir. It's poisoned,” I said.“What are you saying? How can it be poisoned? He replied to me, this time with a glare in his eyes.I was panting softly and looked around to search for Mr. Donovan. He was nowhere to be found.“Lena, I'm talking to you. Trent's strong voice brought me back, and I faced him.“ It's Mr. Donovan; I saw him this morning. He was talking to a strange man, and they exchanged something. I'm sure he—“What the heck are you talking about, Lena? Trent blurted out, frustration evident in his voice. How can a drink I served myself be poisoned? Are you being delusional?I just stood th

Chapter 5

Trent's POVI drove into my father's mansion with Yvonne and Mr. Donovan, her father. It was Friday, and I always spent the night at my father's. It was like a tradition that I got used to. We always had dinner and chatted about little things. But today, Yvonne insisted she wanted to come along with her father. The night was long and cold, and we all sat around the big dining table in my father's mansion. It was just dinner, and it looked like he had prepared a feast. Yvonne and Mr. Donovan were around, and they made jokes with my father.“Trent, I heard about what happened in the conference room today. Yvonne told me you employed a new secretary who has been in a dilemma since she started work,” my father, Dave, said as he chewed on his food.I glanced over at Yvonne, and she just smiled at me. I couldn't believe she told my father about company-related matters.“It's taken care of, Father; you have nothing to worry about. I replied.“Father, you needed to see what happened today; it

Chapter 6

My heart suddenly halted for some seconds as the blood in his vein became obvious, making the vein stand separately. I stared at the sight before me; I couldn't believe that it was my father, lying down in the pool of his own blood. I couldn't feel any movement in his chest, except a shallow breathing escaped through him, and the metallic scent of the blood filled the air. My entire body instantly got paralyzed for a moment; however, I forced my feet forward, and each of my steps was heavy as I moved. “Father!” I screamed, and immediately my knees dropped beside him. I could hear the ringing of my own heartbeat echoing deeply right in my ears. I was instantly caged in the ocean of fears. My father's eyes were weak as he tried to utter some words; however, he couldn't say a word; he couldn't even mumble a thing. His hands were shaken as he reached to hold mine; his face was pale under the dim light. I held his hands firmly, and I could feel the cold crawling through his skin.“Stay w

Chapter 7

Trent's POVThe hospital room became colder than when I first brought my father in; I didn't know maybe it was just me. My fingers kept hitting slightly the armrest of the stiff chair; a drum-like noise echoed gently from it. My leg bounced and moved sweetly as if the movement could speed up time. My eyes were heavy, but I couldn't sleep as my heart was filled with pain. The sterile scent of the antiseptic filled the air, mixing with the low hum of machines and soft murmurs from the hospital staff on night-shift. Every minute stretched was filled with uncertainty. My father was right there in the hospital emergency room, fighting for his life. The door explained that he was stable; however, stable didn't mean safe, not after what had happened. It's been hours that I have been here; the night has turned morning, and I am still waiting to see if my father could get up from his seat and be able to speak with me. His last words about Lenore echoed deeply in my ears. I didn't want to thin

Chapter 8

I walked angrily to the room and searched to see if there was any sign of life, and I found none. It wasn't right! Not after everything that just happened. There has to be more security and more vigilance. If there were enough security, the attack wouldn't have been successful. “I had to fix this. Now!” I didn't know when I screamed aloud. I picked up my phone and started making calls. Firstly to the head of the security guards. “I need security guards at Knight Villa! Like 6 of them, and they are to commence work immediately,” I commanded. “My personal assistant will follow up with you on it!” I said and dropped the call. Then I made a decision: I had to return back to Knight Villa today, and I would bring my own team—a team that wouldn't slip up and wouldn't allow anyone near my father anymore. I then called over the one remaining security guard and placed a call to the police. “There was an attempted murder. Someone tried to kill my father! We need to review the CCTV footage

Chapter 9

Leneora POVMy hands trembled slightly as I stared at the piles of papers Mr. Trent had given me to work on. And I wasn't certain if I could finish it within the few days he mentioned he would be away. As I placed it right on my table and took a deep sigh, my heart was filled with his thoughts; I couldn't even focus or do anything. I lean back on my chair and realize something was off about him; it wasn't about his scream; he looked different and very stressed. Like he had so much he had been battling with. I wish I could help; however, my presence disgusted him; he wouldn't even inform me of anything. I tried to remove his thoughts from my heart momentarily because I didn't understand why my heart wouldn't stop thinking about him. I inhaled deeply and started flipping through the papers. I needed to start as soon as possible to give him some certain assurance that I was capable. As I checked through the papers, I realized that they were mostly routine, things I was already familiar

Chapter 10

Leneora POVAnd before I could speak, my eyes walked through Trent; his face was stressed up; however, his eyes shifted when his phone rang; he grabbed it without hesitation, and I could hear the faint sound of the voice at the other end of the phone. It was as if he had forgotten the phone was on speaker; the call was loud enough that I could hear all the pieces of the conversation. “We found some evidence, sir, about who might be the culprit.” The voice was bold and husky.I stood and observed every hint of Trent's reaction. His posture suddenly changed, and he sat up right, like it was the moment he had been waiting for. “Tell me! Who is it?” He asked, fully anxious; his voice was sharp and filled with eagerness. “I'm sorry! The culprit's face was covered with an apron! The face wasn't shown! There is no clear identity, Mr. Trent." The voice said, and Trent's reaction depicted immediately that it wasn't what he hoped for. The disappointment became obvious immediately on his face
