31 Vulture’s Nest

Present day, Moscow…It was a snowy night in Moscow. No cars dared to occupy the roads. Every single thing in the range of vision was stark white. The winds blew relentlessly, causing a whistling sound to echo across the deserted roads. Only a few shops remained open and the faces of the employees sitting within the glass walls clearly indicated that they didn't want to be there either. A bunch of homeless people gathered around a metal trash can with a fire raging inside it. Far from all the despair and chaos, Ivan Volkov rested on his ornate sofa in front of his fireplace in a dimly lit room. He was in his late fifties and had a head full of white hair in a typical soldier haircut and a similar white beard. He had a large scar across his right cheek and wore a patch where his right eye used to be. His attire always wandered around the military uniforms and that night was no different. Ivan stared into the randomly dancing flames in front of him. The crackling sound of the wood givin

32 Don't Scare Her to Death! (Flashback)

The morning at the farm was warm and bright. All night, Camila had been drowned in blissful dreams involving the fearsome yet soft hearted cartel lord who had fallen for her. If she could, she would stay in the land of dreams forever. The relentless shouting of the birds shook Camila awake. For a moment or two, she loathed the innocent birds. The dirty gauze lying on the table reminded her of her injured father. She quickly got up and prepared breakfast for her injured father. Ell and Sofia were fast asleep. She was cooking eggs in the kitchen while occasionally glancing outside the kitchen window, out at the fields. It was a lovely scene. Every now and then, she zoned out and imagined her future with Hugo. Her life at the farm with her family had been modest to say the least. The little girls were oblivious to the financial hardships faced by the family but Camila was well aware. Camila had to drop out of school to help her father at home but she was exceptional in English so she had

33 False Hope (Flashback)

Camila shivered like a puppy. She couldn't even manage to find her voice. She was certain that there was no way out of it. They were way too deep into the field even if she shouted at the peak of her strength, her voice would never reach her house. Even if it did, her father was too wounded to overpower the three men. She would endanger her father and her little sisters. All she could do was to plead. “I beg you, senor! I’ve never harmed anyone in my life. Please let me go!” Camila pleaded with a shaky voice as tears flowed from her eyes. The man still scanned her like he was deaf. Her words didn't seem to make any difference to him. He extended his hand to her chest. Before he could touch her, she instinctively jerked away from him while she was still on the ground. It only turned him on. He moved forward and grabbed her leg. She instinctively tried to shake him off and her other foot landed on his nose. He put his hands on his nose and yelled in pain. All his friends laughed at him

34 Needs (Flashback)

Michelle kept up her attempts at seduction. They were indeed powerful. Any other man would have been easily swayed by her and danced like a puppet according to her wishes. Hugo on the other hand had known this woman for way too long to be deluded by her charades. He could see right through her facade. He could see from a mile away what her true intentions were. Hugo had thought that their fight the previous night would keep Michelle at bay for a while. The argument had indeed taken a turn for the worst and to an extent, Hugo even regretted some of it. But seeing Michelle’s attitude just twenty four hours later made him change his mind. It only disappointed him. He contemplated how to get rid of her. “Working late honey?” Michelle softly said, in an alluring manner. For a moment, Hugo actually wondered if she gave a crap about his business. But the illusion faded just as quickly as it had conjured up. “Yeah. But I’ve just finished,” he responded indifferently. He gathered up his stuf

35 Thin Air (Flashback)

The old man’s revelation ran a shiver through Hugo. The young woman who had made him feel the happiest he had ever felt was missing. Gabriel had a good reason to be nervous after all. The matter directly involved his master and he didn't dare to interfere in it without Hugo’s direct orders. Hugo still needed specifics. “What happened?”“I woke up in the morning to the smell of burning omelets. I checked around and Camila was nowhere to be found. I thought she was out shopping. I waited and waited. She doesn't have many friends either,” the father pleaded. Hugo had the gears turning in his head. It was almost midnight. The kind of a woman Camila was, she wouldn't wander about for too long without letting her family know. It made Hugo anxious. He was pacing across the room. “Did she say anything? Anything at all?” Hugo asked the father, trying to get a clue. A part of him feared if she had second thoughts about his proposal but couldn't gather the courage to say anything and ran away

36 Three Skulls (Flashback)

The morning sun could do little to brighten up the day. The Santa Maria Hospital was crawling with commando gear clad guards. The place looked like a fortress. No one could get inside unchecked. It had been the longest night of Hugo’s entire life. He was pacing back and forth across the hospital floor, cursing himself under his breath repeatedly. He knew at the back of his mind that it was his fault. Camila had become his responsibility the moment he slipped that ring on her finger. Hugo felt like he had failed her and the guilt was eating him from the inside out. The best doctors in the country were trying their best to save Camila but they didn't make any promises. Her condition was far from favorable and she needed all the prayers she could get. The external wounds weren't very severe but her insides were destroyed beyond recognition. There was little doubt that Camila was caught in the crossfire. Whoever did that to her, simply hurt her to get to him. The thing that he couldn't

37 The Inevitable Confrontation

The present day…Hugo sat in the hotel room, staring out of the window. Gabriel’s words echoed in his ears. It had been a while since Hugo had killed the Bratva leader’s son. There had been no retaliation from Ivan. When Camila disappeared from his mansion with the American architect, he had doubted that there was a Russian hand behind it but his doubts faded when he found his Camila reemerge as Jessica in a remote town in Nebraska. He had ordered his men to secure her house so he could meet her in person. He awaited the confirmation and stared at nothingness outside the window. Everything was dark. Only a handful of neon lights and screens were visible. His phone buzzed. It was a call from an unknown number. There were rarely any people who dared to call him on his phone directly. He stared at the flashing number for a while before answering it. There was silence on the other side. Then he heard a familiar voice. “Hugo Ortiz?” Jessica’s voice emerged. Hugo sprang up to his feet in s

38 Volkov’s Army

In the middle of the night, the hardware store owned by the Bratva was deserted. Everything was dark except the room upstairs. Vladimir sat at his table in his makeshift office and awaited the call from his men. His eyes were fixated on the phone. Every passing minute added to his anxiety. The plan was fool proof. It had taken them a week and a lot of resources to come up with it. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to get on his boss’s good side. Hugo Ortiz was wide open and all Vladimir had to do was to score. Hugo was going to meet his woman at her house tonight. This piece of information was enough for Vladimir to arrange an ambush. Drops of sweat formed on his pale forehead. His focus was disturbed by a pained groan emerging meters away from him. The source was Gabriel who was tied to a chair, barely holding on to his life. The old man was bleeding from head to toe. Vladimir didn't like the distraction. “Can you please shut the fuck up?” Vladimir yelled and threw a paper wei

39 Retreat

The driver pulled out of the neighborhood and looked around for a hospital. A few bullets had collided with the back of the car while most of them missed the target. Hugo had a mixture of emotions on his face. At one moment, it was rage then it was puzzlement but the pain was there all the same. He had been shot at multiple times in the past but had always somehow avoided taking a bullet. This was the first time that a bullet had found its way to him. It was probably because he had been too blinded by the excitement of meeting his lover that he forgot to take care of his security. There were little to no enemies of his that were left breathing but he was in a foreign territory and there were just too many moving parts to take care of. Thinking about his security reminded him of Gabriel and what he was going through. The driver realized that going to a hospital may be dangerous and decided to ask. “Should we go to a hospital?” He asked Hugo. “No. To Varga’s place,” Hugo replied after

40 It’s Not Your Fault

When Hugo finally woke up, he had to squint his eyes to bear the sunlight in the room. His head was spinning like a top. It took him a while to recognize the room he was in. As he tried to sit up, he received a painful reminder of the events of the previous night. His arm was killing him. He jolted with pain and lied back down. His groan was audible enough to attract Juan’s attention outside the room. He dashed inside to see if everything was alright. He found Hugo trying his best to endure the pain without causing much drama. Juan had hired a nurse to take care of Hugo as long as he needed. The nurse followed him inside and checked the IV. It was still half full. She injected a painkiller into the IV and started checking the monitors. Juan had prepared well. The room that looked like a military operated armory just hours ago, could now be mistaken for a hospital room with all the medical equipment lying around. Hugo was trying his best to find the least painful angle. “The vitals
