THE AMBUSH

I could literally feel the awkwardness.Somehow I had gotten stuck sitting in between Joshua and Bea in the SUV.We were using two pack vehicles, the first one - which was ahead of us - was being driven by Peterwith Allison, Joshua, Andre and Courtney riding with him.The rest of us were with May.Bea sat with her arms crossed against her chest and Joshua just stared out the window.May didn't speak either and I wondered if she too understood the gravity of the situation. She wasTristan's apprentice, which meant by default she had to know his brothers. How personal theirrelationship was the question. Like how well did she understand Bea and Joshua's relationship? We were driving past the town centre, I caught a glimpse of one of Chris' mother's employeesopening up the bakery. I sighed thinking about how she was probably starting a fresh batch of incrossbuns.I had worked for Mrs Gonzalez for two summers in the past with Kat just to make a little pocketmoney. It was a really fun e

THE SCENT

"Mummy, mummy." I remember being only seven years old, wearing my favourite Bubbles night dress. Bubbles was my favourite power puff girl and because of that, my father had also adopted that as a nickname for me. "Crystal." My mother sighed, looking down at me from where she was standing by the sink doing the dishes. "You're supposed to be asleep." I didn't say anything. I just placed my thumb in my mouth. A habit that I was yet to curb. "Nightmares?" My mother guessed. I nodded. My mother looked a lot like an older version of me. Or at least that's what people told me. I always thought she was much prettier with her big and long hair which she always found new ways of styling. Her dark beautiful skin, her round hazel eyes and the beauty spot right above her top lip. For me, at that age, there were two sure marks of gorgeousness, dimples and beauty marks, two things I didn't have. "Well daddy is sleeping." She spoke as she walked over to the pantry and took out a box of

I wasn't going to. At least not in front of her.Bridget's eyes flashed blue. She looked back at me. "Tristan is here." She muttered. She turned to start walking away.I followed quietly, still just trying to hold myself up.I honestly didn't want to see Tristan after what Bridget had just told me. But I knew refusing wouldjust cause more problems. So I just let my feet guide me.HQ was impressive for a building that was mostly hidden in the middle of the forest. They had somehow managed to make it look more spacious than it seemed. But with the mood I was in, I didn't even pay as much attention as I was supposed to.The minute we got to the bottom of the stairs, I sensed Tristan's presence.I saw his back first. There were soldiers surrounding him, listening and nodding along to whatever hewas saying. "Okay, you're dismissed." He told them and they dispersed. All except two, who continued talking tohim. I rrealised that it was Peter and Instructor Raphael. Tristan suddenly turne

THE PRICE OF PROTECTION

TrIstan "You do realise that you're in serious trouble, right?" Bridget spoke as she walked behind me."Is the luna secure?" I asked, ignoring her statement."Tristan, forget Crystal for a second and let's talk about you. You ordered Captain Park not tointerrogate her. What do you think the rest of the council is going to think when they hear aboutthat? She's one of the most respected individuals of the pack, your mother chose herherself, she mentored you and has always treated you like a son. And now it looks like you'rechoosing Crystal over her."I stopped and spun around. "That's because I am." I told Bridget. She rolled her eyes. "Right. You're choosing the Van Cliffe wolf, who is also the girlfriend of our current number one most wanted over the woman who was there when you were born.""Watch it, Bridge." I growled. She took a step forward, not at all intimidated. "You chose me to be your beta because I give it toyou straight. Because I've been your best friend since diaper

HISTORY LESSON

"You are not failing werewolf history, not if I have anything to do with it." Roman spoke as he settled down on the grass beside me. What I thought was going to be a romantic picnic in the park with no mountain climbing whatsoever turned out to be a surprise study session. I had to say, even if this wasn’t my idea of a date, I was impressed by the effort. He had made flashcards and his old notes and books and all my favourite snacks were here, chocolate covered strawberries, tortilla chips, salted pistachios... the works. "How did you even know I was failing history?" I groaned as I picked up a chip and bit into it. Kat always hated the fact that I liked eating tortilla chips without dip. "Kat." Roman shrugged as he leaned against the tree we had chosen for shade. I rolled my eyes. I usually wasn't embarrassed by my grades. I worked really hard for them after all. But then there was werewolf history, something I hadn't even known existed until recently. So of course I was

"Um, so you're just gonna be here?" I asked Rick.Rick was part of the security detail Tristan had allocated to me.And to be honest, I wasn't exactly thrilled.Rick seemed nice, don't get me wrong, I mean so far he hadn't spat the word 'halfling' in my face orgiven me an accusatory look like pretty much everyone had been doing so far.Hey, it's not like I had summoned the Van Cliffe wolves. To be honest, I was as curious about why they had come after me as well ."Yes, Luna." He responded. "But don't worry, it will be like we're not even here."I looked behind him at the minivan we had come back in, at the six other soldiers who were alreadyscouting the area.I nodded, "um, okay, thanks. I'll be heading in now." I told him."Okay, Luna." He spoke with a bow.I sighed. I didn't even have the energy to argue with that title right now. I turned around and headed up to the houseTristan had wanted to escort me home but he had emergency meetings to chair and not to mention, wolves to

SOMEONE'S WATCHING

"You look like a princess!" Hazel gasped. I ran my hand down the fabric of my dress, smoothing it over before taking in a deep breath. "You think so?" I asked. She nodded as she came around the dress, lifting the skirt. "It's so flowy." I smiled. Aunt Sarah was a miracle workerKat and I had gone from store to store for days looking for the perfect dress. But nothing we found was good enough. And if they were, they were way above my budget. Roman had offered to pay but I had firmly refused him. I knew that he usually saved the money he got from working for Uncle Victor because his foster parents hardly gave him a penny. And he was still a few weeks away from getting his AAP allowance. I wasn't at all comfortable with taking money from Roman. Kat and I had pretty much given up on finding a dress for the ball until Aunt Sarah came to the rescue. She had a seamstress friend, Miss Rachel, who had been making bridesmaid dresses. One of the dresses had been left behind because

REALISATION

"Two words! Therapy sucks!" Kat yelled as she stormed into the room, slamming the door open. She threw her backpack on the floor."I mean, I like Dr Vega, I really do. She seems like a nice lady and she always wears the coolest pantssuits but all that talk about my 'unspoken' feelings and my ‘stored up anger’ and finding 'healthy'outlets and - what's wrong with you?" Kate stopped ranting when she saw me on the floor, sittingwith my legs pulled up to my chest.I gulped when I looked up at her."Close the door." I whispered. She closed the door behind her and looked at me in confusion"You're not having some weird PTSD reaction to your attack, are you?" She asked bluntly.I looked at her.Wasn't therapy supposed to be making her more empathetic?"Because that's ridiculous. You do know they're like six ripped soldiers out there standing guard foryou, right?"She didn't even stop to listen to me before she continued speaking. "You will not believe how everyone at school was talking

MOVING OUT

"I don't need to hear you say it back, Crystal. I honestly don't. But I love you. And I know I don't deserve your love because you were right, I'm broken." Ha!"... I just wanted to give you something that special as well. Something you would take with you everywhere you go. Almost like you have a piece of me with you... Do you like it?" Oh why yes, Ro, I simply adore being spied on."The Silvercrest pack is all I've ever really known as home." Then why did you betray them?"Crystal... I'm still here." No, you're not Ro."We can have anything we want, Crystal. I can give us anything we want. Even Woodfell." I never wanted Woodfell, Roman, I wanted you!“My Lady is right here, where else would I rather be?” Liar!I remember the day Roman left like it was yesterday.
