Chapter 21 - The brutal truth, and a broken promise.

AvaOver the coming months, my grandma and my family helped me to prepare the spare bedroom for my little one. I also found out that each pack had their own doctor, and that our pack’s doctor was my uncle Eddie. He was a kind gray old man, who each time asked me what I had done this time, whenever I went for a checkup. He made me feel comfortable, and it saddened me to think back to the first two ultrasound images that I left behind. The baby was growing at an alarming rate, and soon they were rushing me to our own little hospital that basically consisted of uncle Eddie’s exam room.I had gone through my first couple of shifts as a werewolf, and although it was incredibly painful, both baby and I survived. Life at the pack house was surprisingly modern, and they even had a huge baby shower for me. While I was screaming bloody murder, convinced that my son was trying to tear me apart from the inside out, my grandmother and uncle Eddie tried their best to make up for the fact that Danie

Chapter 22 - A new dream.

DanielI somehow convinced Harper to leave, but things were very tense all around the pack grounds. Everywhere I went I could hear people gossiping. Our future was probably somewhere out there, and I was refusing to give them the certainty of a pack Luna, and therefore the certainty of my heir being on the way.I was convinced that Ava had died, and that my son was probably now in her grandmother’s care. Somewhere out there an old woman was going to raise a werewolf. She was probably going to be killed the first time he shifted, if she lived that long.I had contacted everyone I could think of to try and help me find my son, but it seemed that Ava had either given birth under a different name, which I highly doubted, or she had not given birth in a hospital. My mind was going crazy as I imagined her frail grandmother watching her granddaughter give birth and dying. My heart, however, told me that Ava was strong, and that she had survived. The moon goddess would not have matched me wit

Chapter 23 - Bittersweet memories.

AvaI was fooling myself into thinking that the pack would accept another Alpha. Since I was new to this world, I mistakenly believed that it worked the same way as the human world did. I didn’t understand how important it was that the Alpha-born became the Alpha of the pack.I was quickly learning that the saying “the strongest will survive” was very literal when you were a werewolf. Although we spend most of our time in our human form, and although we were partly human, we would still turn into ravenous beasts every time the moon was full.Along with the Alpha title came the responsibility of not only leading the pack, but also protecting them. Because I was the Alpha, I was also the strongest. I was beginning to understand why Daniel had acted the way that he did, and kidnapped me.I could feel the so-called “mate bond” pulling at the back of my mind as memories of a happier time kept pushing their way forward. From the first disastrous not-dinner, to the night we made Kai. Images

Chapter 24 - Our neighbours.

HarperI always had my ear to the ground for any information of any kind. Even the smallest insignificant piece of information could sometimes help you out of a very difficult situation if you just knew how to use it, and I had become an expert of getting myself out of trouble and keeping my secrets. The day I overheard the two Omegas discussing the return of the Alpha female, my instincts told me that piece of information would turn the tides. Now that the Alpha of our biggest rivals had returned, Daniel’s attention would have to be on strengthening and protecting our pack.I could hear him and his father screaming at each other yet again, as I made my way down the passage past Ava’s old bedroom towards Daniel’s office. I was just in time to jump in between the two growling and snarling males, who were ready to tear each other apart.“What the hell are you two doing? Are you trying to kill each other? Maybe I should just leave you to finish the job, and take over the pack myself.” I

Chapter 25 - The meeting.

AvaIn the morning, I informed my elder council that I would accept the title. They gathered the pack, and joyous howls erupted when I informed the pack of my decision, and declared Kai as my heir. Up to that point, the future of the pack was unsure.I appreciated the respect they showed by not choosing a new Alpha while I was away, and the time had come to be the person I was always meant to be. Now that the decision had been made, and accepted by the pack, we could officially agree to a meeting with our neighbours.I quickly found out that it wasn’t as simple as just agreeing to a meeting. In the world of werewolves, having the upper-hand was always the most important. The other Alpha had insisted that we meet in his territory, but my council was telling me that it would be better for us to meet in ours.Since we were at a stalemate, I suggested that we meet in neutral territory where neither party would be able to show their true selves, and we would all be forced to behave, which

Chapter 26 - The raven-haired baby.

AvaI would never admit it out loud, but it was shocking seeing Daniel again. Although I kind of, sort of expected to see him. He finally sat down, and we just sat there staring at each other, while the tension outside the shop grew. I could tell that we would have to find a resolution quickly before the people outside decided for us.“So, what did you want to see me about?” I could see that he was still trying to process the fact that I was the one he met. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the luxury of wasting that time for fear that I would tell him about his son.“That can wait. I want to know how you became the Alpha. More importantly, I want to know about my pup. Is it safe? Is he or she happy? Did he or she survive?” He bombarded me with questions I wasn’t going to answer.“The last time we saw each other I was your prisoner. Do you honestly think that I would tell you anything after the way you treated me? I will, however, if it will make this process quicker, tell you that our s

Chapter 27 - An uncertain future.

DanielEverything in me was screaming for me to go with Ava and Kai, but under the circumstances, it was impossible. We both needed time to process what happened, as well as figuring out what it was that we wanted. I suggested that we take a week and meet up at the ice-cream shop at the same time the following week.To keep Ava and my son safe, I let them leave first. I also wanted to send one of my warriors to follow them, and to find out exactly where their pack was situated. The moment I left the store, my father wanted to know what we had decided, and if the baby he saw was mine.“I wouldn’t trust a word that girl said. It is clear that she hid the truth from you. From the start, it was a very real possibility that her pack had planned all of it. And that the so-called mate bond you felt was all fake. What if that pack found a witch to put a spell on you? You know I wouldn’t put anything past them.” I growled at my father, and he took a step back. I couldn’t believe that he was ac

Chapter 28 - Peace at what price?

AvaDaniel and I had a week to decide not only our own fates, but also that of our packs, and more importantly, Kai’s. It felt very overwhelming to make a decision that could impact my son’s future so dramatically. How was Kai going to rule two packs that had been in a blood feud for generations? My grandmother entered the room as I was getting Kai ready for the evening. I put him down in his crib when she called me over. I could tell from the look in her eyes that whatever she was about to say was going to be something that I wasn’t going to like.“Nobody wants to push you into a corner, but I feel that this has to be said. You and Daniel might have declared a temporary ceasefire between the packs, but our pack has been without its Alpha since the day your parents died. There is no way they are going to accept the Alpha of our biggest enemy as their ruler. I know that all of this is new to you, but you have to think about what will happen to our people and our family, if you allow th

Chapter 29 - Desires and duty.

DanielI could completely understand why Ava didn’t want anything to do with me. I also understood why my pack wasn’t happy about the recent turn of events. That was my problem. I could understand all of their points of view, but nobody was even willing to listen to mine.I had a son. A son, I had only spent a couple of minutes with. I didn’t even know when his birthday was, for goodness’s sake! I also had a son with my destined mate. How could any of them deny me the privilege of having a life with the one person the moon goddess believed was the right person for me?With my mind made up, I called a pack meeting. I informed them of what happened between me and Ava because I didn’t want anyone going rogue. I didn’t want someone from my pack forcing a war. To make sure none of them would be able to do so, I gave an Alpha order to the effect.“You can’t do that son!” My father growled in front of everyone, and it was the last straw. I shifted, not caring how it was going to look, and gl

Chapter 30 - Common ground.

AvaThis was too big of a decision to make on my own. If it was just me and Kai that I had to worry about, the decision would have been simple, but I also had to think about the safety of my people. I had read everything there was to read about the war between the packs, but something told me that the history books were pretty one-sided.I was sure that if I read Daniel’s pack’s history books, I would see an entirely different picture. Then there was also that mate bond thing my grandmother told me about. Suddenly, I knew that I had found the one little loose thread I needed. My only hope was that I could find a way to unravel whatever this tension was between the two packs. I called them all together in our square, and I was again surprised by the sheer number of pack members. From what I saw while I was Daniel’s prisoner, we outnumbered their pack two to one.“I have called all of you together to remind you of something. Daniel isn’t just Kai’s father. He is also my destined mate.”
