CHAPTER 31: TRAINING SESSION

Meredith’s POVAlpha Caelen was clearly a man of great strength. Ever since that moment at the cave, I always knew he possessed many unique qualities. They all did. While Saul was cunning, smart, and more skilled in different crafts that didn’t involve brute force, Caelen was the exact opposite. This was his field. Which is why, at this moment, he circled me like a predator would its prey; my heart was pounding wildly against my chest.“You know I can hear your heart beating wildly in your chest, right?” He asks, stopping right in front of me and staring down at me with those honey brown eyes. Well, that wasn’t surprising, was it? His face is dead serious; it isn’t mischievous like Saul’s or void of emotion like Roman's. His was a somewhat combination of both. There is a wild curiosity in his eyes, along with a need for perfection. If not, there will be a blood bath. A shiver runs down my spine when he slides a strand of my hair gently behind my ear. It sends an army of goosebumps

CHAPTER 32: BIRTHDAY BLUES

Meredith’s POV"Wait, let me get this straight; you broke Gwen’s nose?” Sarah asks, and I nod in confirmation. She blinks up at me like she is still trying to process everything I just said. “You mean the Gwen we all know? Like Queen Bee Gwen?”A frustrated sigh leaves my lips. “There is only one Gwen in this palace, Sarah.” She takes a seat beside me by the fountain and places a hand over her head.“I don’t know if I am impressed or scared,” she mutters, and my eyebrows furrow with confusion. “Why would you be scared?” I ask, and she looks at me with her brow raised.“You punched one of the most vicious women in this whole palace and even went as far as breaking her nose. If you aren’t scared, then you are either dumb or suicidal,” she explains, and I roll my eyes. Gwen is the last person I would ever fear. “She wouldn’t dare lay a finger on me,” I say confidently, but Sarah clearly doesn’t believe that. Deep down, neither do I. Gwen is vengeful and would hardly let anyone make a f

CHAPTER 33: A WISH AND THREE PRESENTS

Meredith's POV: I make my way to Sarah’s room, but she isn’t in there. My feet begin to move on their own accord to the library, but she is also nowhere to be found. And it isn’t just Sarah; it is everyone. Where could they all be?The last place I could think of is the swimming pool, so I head right there. The second I push open the door, my jaw touches the floor, and tears instantly sting my eyes.“SURPRISE!” I remained dumbfounded and speechless for the first few seconds. There are balloons and streamers everywhere. Sarah has the widest smile out of everyone here; my eyes fall on the cake in her hands, reading ‘Happy birthday, Mer', and that is when the dam officially broke. The cake wasn’t as big as the one I usually get back home, but it still meant a lot.“Sarah, what is all this?” I asked, wiping away the tears that were streaming down my cheeks. My efforts were futile, considering that more only poured out.“Your birthday party, of course! I told Madam Estrid about today,

CHAPTER 34: GRAND INVITATION

Meredith's POV An annoyed groan leaves my lips as the buzz coming from outside my door infiltrates my ears. How can people be so loud this early in the morning?I attempt to use my pillow to shut my ears, but to no avail. I stay in that position, hoping to get some peace and quiet, but the noise only worsens. What the hell? I thought the party was over. What's with all the buzz and festivity?Sighing in defeat, I come to the realization that I won't be getting any more sleep today. I sit up and straighten my hair. My eyes fall on the three presents by my bedside, and a smile automatically lifts my lips. The memories of yesterday come flooding in, and I can't help but get this tingly sensation in my chest. I didn't know so many people cared about me here. But it still would have been better if my father were present. I wonder how he is doing. Whenever I think of him, my heart aches terribly. The weight in my chest grows heavier by the day, and all I want to do right now is hug him

CHAPTER 35: BETRAYAL

Meredith's POV: The person sitting in the dark, empty room should have been expected, but I don't know why it surprised me.My eyes narrow into a glare as I stare at her sitting on an armchair. She has a blank death stare on her face, and judging by the red skin surrounding her nose and how crooked it looks, I would say she's pretty pissed.“What do you want, Gwen?” I demand, and she plasters a fake yet sadistic grin on her face.“Just to have a friendly conversation with you,” she says, and I snort.“Not interested,” I say, and just when I am about to turn my back on her, she takes out a golden dagger from her pocket and slams the tip into the arm of the chair. Most people would be scared when someone like Gwen pulled out a weapon on them. But I was pissed. That wasn't just any ordinary golden dagger. That was mine. The very one Saul gifted me. How the hell did she get it?“Well then, I suppose the conversation is going to be quite unfriendly then. Whichever way you choose, I am goi

CHAPTER 36: DEATH NOTE

Roman’s POVMy gaze falls over the balcony to my men scurrying about beneath me. The preparations for the ball tomorrow had commenced, and here I was making sure that everything goes according to plan. Nothing can screw this up; I have to catch the mole tonight. A pair of approaching footsteps fills my ears, and I already know who my visitor is without having to look at them. “Is it ready?” I ask him, and I can practically feel him nod. “Yes, your majesty. All the invitations have been sent out. The chefs have begun their preparations for the meals, and the decorators will be here first thing tomorrow morning." "I have also made preparations for one of the best DJs; everything has been sorted out. Now all you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the ball.” Max says it in a jolly tone, and I have to keep myself from rolling my eyes. If only it was that simple. I will be doing a lot more than just enjoying myself tomorrow night. I could not blame him, though; he does not know m

CHAPTER 37: UNWANTED FAVOURS

Meredith’s POVWhat the fuck?A groan leaves my lips as I slowly return to the land of the conscious. My head is pounding, and every fiber in my body feels tingly. I must have been asleep for too long. And not to mention, I had the weirdest dream... My memory is a bit foggy, but I remember bits and pieces of it. I remember watching Sarah stab me with something; I think it was a syringe. Then Gwen walked in, and they took me somewhere. It was weird because I was watching everything outside my body, almost like it was some sort of movie. And then Roman appeared, and... My heart plummets to the pit of my stomach, and I shoot up to a sitting position. My eyes lock with a pair that instantly steal my breath. Roman. He is sitting on a chair directly facing my bed; he has been watching me. why? Before I can part my lips to ask him what is going on here, I feel a sharp sting on my neck. I touch the aching spot to find a little spec of blood on my fingertips. My blood runs col

CHAPTER 38: THE BALL

Meredith's POV Madam Estrid walks in with a large scowl on her face and annoyance swirling within her fading gray eyes. “Are you deaf? Didn’t you hear me knocking?” I stay silent. I couldn’t speak. I was almost too tired. She glares down at me and says, “It will soon be time for the ball. Everyone is getting ready; you should as well.” Once again, I say nothing. If I didn’t know better, I almost believe that there was a flash of worry in her eyes. But there was not a single soul that actually cared about me in this damn place. She sighs, and her hands go up to her nape. “I heard what happened, and it is quite unfortunate; although I could say I expected death to come knocking on Gwen’s door eventually, I never expected it for Sarah. She was a good girl.” I pinch my eyes shut and let another tear slide down my face. Why was she telling me this? Is this her way of condoning me? Madam Estrid continues, “But you have to pull yourself together. One thing you must get used to he

CHAPTER 39: AN OLD FRIEND

Meredith’s POV Idris has changed so much. His once-vibrant brown eyes are now rimmed with a bloody red tint. His fresh, young face has been assaulted with beards and a couple of wrinkles, if I might add. But he is still the same handsome jock I fell in love with all those years ago. After he walked away from me when I announced my marriage to Johnothan to him, I never thought I would see him again. Much less in a kingdom miles away from ours, standing in a black suit and stubble over his once freshly shaven face. His shabby hair has grown a bit longer as well. I notice that he looks so much more tired than the last time I saw him. Almost sad. But right now, as he stands before me, there is a glimmer of hope. There are so many emotions bubbling within me as I gaze into his eyes. Idris has been my best friend since childhood and my boyfriend for over three years. Yet ever since I ran away from home, I never thought about him again. But seeing him here fills me with so m

CHAPTER 40: SAVED BY THE BELL

Meredith's POV Idris and I turn to find Caelen leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets. His attire is similar to Roman’s but a lot less sinister. His hazel eyes shift from Idris to me suspiciously, and my mouth opens and shuts as I try to think of a lie. If they find out who Idris really is, they will kill him, and then they will kill me because then he will know that I lied to him. I have been lying to all of them about who I really am. When neither of us answer, Caelen pushes himself off the doorframe and eyes Idris carefully, "I have never seen you before,” he says, encircling Idris in an intimidating manner. I did my best to calm myself down and try not to give us away, but it is just so hard. If there was one thing I hated about these kings, it was their ability to evoke fear in anyone without even trying. “I am one of the new recruits, your majesty.” Idris lies coolly, and Caelen’s eyelids are narrow. “Is that so? And to what rank?” Caelen inter
