Chapter 31

I take the train to Kate's apartment, not wanting to be alone at home. I use the spare key and let myself inside. I find her asleep,, sprawled out beneath the blankets in her bed in the back corner of the studio apartment, realizing the time, I remember she had worked third shift last night at the hospital. I feel bad waking her but I don't know what else to do. I drop my belongings on the couch and crawl into bed with her, snuggling up in the blankets. She rolls over and yawns. "Kris?" she mutters without opening her eyes. "What are you doing here?" I sniff, trying to hold back more tears. "I—we—" my voice wavers. Kate opens her eyes and says firmly, "Kristine? what's going on?" "First fight." I groan, covering my face with her blankets. "He was a complete asshole and—Ugh!" Kate sighs and wraps her arms around me. She doesn't say anything, she just holds me while I cry. Time passes slowly as I calm myself down. My gasping breaths are beginning to balance out and the remnants of

Chapter 32

"Anna and Ben are going to meet us there." I slide the shower curtain aside to peek out at Elliot who is shaving his face over the sink. "What time do you think we should leave?" Elliot shrugs and turns off the electric razor, tapping it against the sink. I watch the hair clippings fly onto the counter top. Elliot puts the razor down but fails to clean up the stray hairs. I scrunch my nose. "You're disgusting." Elliot looks at me and grins. "Yeah, but you love it." He brushes the soap off of my forehead and kisses me. He undresses and joins me under the hot water, sliding his hands along the wet curves of my body. "To answer your question, we should leave by five," Elliot says. I turn to face him and reach up, wrapping my hands around his neck. "I'm excited to see Anna, and for her to get to know you better." "I won't be known as the stranger who crashed her wedding anymore." Elliot teases. I shake my head and laugh. Elliot hasn't seen any of my family since Anna's wedding, whi

Chapter 33

I place my hands on my hips and look at the disaster around me. Clothes everywhere, boxes and suitcases stacked upon each other, towering in the living room. Kate drops a box down with a loud thud. She sighs and lays down on the couch. "You own a lot of shit." She groans. "I never knew one person could own so much stuff." I shrug and rub my temples. "What am I doing?" I mutter. "What am I doing?" "Moving in with your boyfriend." Kate retorts, stretching her arms above her head. "That's what you're doing." I narrow my eyes in her direction. "Smart ass," I groan, dropping down onto the couch beside her. "Why would I leave my perfectly good apartment to move in with some guy I met in a bar?" Kate sits up and punches my arm, her face blank as she does so. "Ouch!" I exclaim, rubbing my sore muscle. "What the fuck was that for?" "You're being an idiot. Stop trying to self-sabotage. You know he's not just 'some guy you met in a bar' anymore. He's your boyfriend and you love him." "Me

Chapter 34

"I'll be fine Kate, I just need some sleep. I'll figure this out in the morning." I assure her as she stands at my front door, hesitant to leave. "Call me if you need anything," she says. "Like, if you need me to kick his ass or something." I force a smile. "Of course." I give her a tight squeeze and close the door behind her as she makes her way to the elevator. I drop myself down onto the couch, my eyes scanning the boxes around the room. I have the urge to begin unpacking them. Things have been going so well for us. Fucking James. I would be perfectly content if I never saw that man again, Elliot's best friend or not. I roll onto my side, holding one of the throw pillows to my chest, and hugging it close against me. I turn on the television to distract myself, mindlessly watching reruns of old sitcoms. I hear the click of the door unlocking and it opens and closes quietly. Elliot enters the apartment and slowly approaches me on the couch. I lift my head up from the pillow and

Chapter 35

Rachel... his wife? HIS WIFE?! "Ex-wife!" Elliot's voice is harsh behind me, I flinch at the tone of it. He joins me at the door, dressed in his sweatpants but bare chested. His face is hard, his jaw rigid and clenched as he stares at the woman— at his wife. I feel the blood drain from my face and I'm hit with a wave of disorientation. I clutch the door to keep myself in an upright position, unable to determine if I'm going to vomit or faint. My body goes numb and I feel as if I'm watching everything play out in slow motion. Elliot and Rachel are speaking loudly, their voices growing into angry shouts, but I cannot process their words. They sound muffled, as though I'm listening to them from under water. I release the door and stumble back into the apartment. They follow behind me, Elliot slamming the door forcefully. "I—I..." I stutter. "Wife?" My heart beats uncontrollably, I press my hand against my chest in an attempt to stabilize myself. "Ex-wife," Elliot says again through g

Chapter 36

The sounds of creaking floorboards and loud whispers outside of the door pull me from sleep. I blink a few times, clearing my vision, and squint against the sunlight seeping in through the curtain. My eyes feel enlarged and heavy, sensitive from hours of crying. I look around the room, taking a couple of seconds to remember where I am. I'm home. The whispers stop and my mom opens the bedroom door a small crack. She peeks inside, smiling at me softly when she realizes that I'm awake. My dad hovers in the hallway, not wanting to intrude, but wanting to see me to ensure that I'm okay. "I wasn't sure if you were awake yet," she says. I nod. "I am now," I sigh, rolling over and pulling the blankets up to my chin. Mom enters the room and stands at the foot of the bed. She motions to the empty space beside me. "May I?" she asks. I nod again. She crawls into the bed, laying down beside me. She takes me into her arms, holding me like she did the last time I was in this situation. The la

Chapter 37

"Shit!" I hear Kate mutter, followed by a soft thud. "Dammit.""Are you okay?" I call from the bathroom. "Have I ever told you that you own a lot of shit?" She groans. I stifle a laugh,. "Yeah, once or twice." While I had been with my parents, Kate managed to recollect all of my belongings from Elliot's apartment. He had been there while she was repacking some of the boxes, but wouldn't tell me much more than that. Part of me wanted to know how he was doing, the other part of me wanted him to not exist. "I have another apartment showing scheduled tomorrow, you'll only have to deal with me for a little longer." I've been sleeping on Kate's couch for nearly two weeks now, and today is my first day back in the office after taking some personal time to recollect myself. While I'm not whole, I'm at least functional. "You know you can stay here as long as you want,." Kate tells me, leaning against the bathroom door. "Maybe I'll just move into the storage unit with the rest of my thin

Chapter 38

A recess is called and I'm ushered out of the courtroom, Brian and Elliot escort me back to the conference room where Julia is waiting. Julia rises from her seat as we enter the small room and I quickly put distance between myself and Elliot. "They seem satisfied with what you've said, Kristine. I believe you and Julia can leave,." Brian tells us. "Thank you," I say as I quickly throw my bag over my shoulder. "Good luck, gentlemen," Julia says as she recollects her papers. We hurriedly exit the room, leaving Brian and Elliot behind. "Kristine!" Elliot calls after me in a hushed tone. "Wait a minute!" I stop walking, close my eyes and inhale. I flex my fingers before clenching them together, my nails digs into my palms, the sensation grounding my emotions. "We can keep going, Kris. We're done here." Julia grabs my arm, gently pulling. I shake my head. "I'll meet you at the car in a few minutes," I tell her. "He's going to keep trying. I need to just hear what he has to say." Sh

Chapter 39

"No, please." I try to fight him off. "Mr. Harris—" "Shut up," he hisses in my ear. A slight whimper escapes my lips. He turns around and hits the emergency stop button on the elevator panel. "You've ruined everything for me. I've lost it all. My home, my wife, my kids, my job. It's all gone and it's all because of you," "Doing this... Won't help your case..." I spit. I ball my hand into a fist lift my arm, attempting to hit him. He wraps his meaty hand around my wrist and pins it against the elevator wall. "Probably not, but it sure does make me feel better." He removes his forearm from my throat, replacing it with his hand. I take in a quick breath before I feel his thumb and fingers press against my airway. "I haven't got anything else to lose." I've reached my limit. My sadness, my disappointment, my anger, spills over all at once. I haven't got anything else to lose. "You fucking did this to yourself," I force the words past my lips, I'm finding it harder to breathe. "What

Chapter 40 aftermath

"The surgery was successful. Bleeding is under control, it doesn't look like there will be any long lasting damage. Recovery from wounds like this could take time, but she was very fortunate." "Thank you, thank you very much doctor," my mother says through muffled sobs. I hear footsteps retreating and the click of a door closing. Mom sits down beside me and runs her fingers through my hair. "Did you hear that, baby? You're going to be okay." **** "Elliot, go home and get some rest," Mom says softly. "You need to clean yourself up." "I can't. I can't leave yet." Elliot's voice is strained and hoarse. "Honey..." My mom's voice cracks. "You still have her...her blood all over you. Please. Go home, shower, change, there will still be a place here for you when you get back." "My shirt... I–I didn't even realize..." **** "Three stab wounds to the abdomen. Two broken ribs. Concussion and minor brain bleed as a result of a skull fracture?" Kate lists off. "Her neck and face are cove
