Chapter Eighty-One

Lauren's POV Damien was extremely quick to stand up and walk out of the hospital room that I was in after telling me to remain in there and not make a move to leave. “Even if I wanted to, I can’t,” I replied, showing him the IV connected to my hand. “I’m too tired to stand up anyway.” As he slammed the door shut and went out, I turned to Darla who had a worried expression on her face. It got me curious enough to want to know the intensity of the differences between Damien and his brother and how much of a mess they would make out there. “How big of a scene is Jameson making?” I inquired, pulling her out of her mind. “Not nearly as big enough as what will happen when Damien goes out there,” she answered. “He kept asking to see his brother’s wife from the receptionist, and he forbade her from calling the room. He almost forced himself into the elevator.” My brows rose to the sky as I imagined what Damien would be saying to him in that moment.

Chapter Eighty-Two

Lauren's POV “You seem to have heard enough about me,” Jameson said, laughing as I avoided eye contact with him. “What have you heard? Pray tell.” “Get the fuck out of my house right before I do something that we’re both going to regret,” Damien said, taking me towards a couch and placing me down on it. “He’s not going to do anything to you.” “You’re falling in the same trap that father fell into,” Jameson said to Damien. “It’s surprising that you don’t see it. Even if you don’t, it’s distressing that nobody else told you about it. Why didn’t you tell him that the same thing that happened to father—” “Talk about him one more time,” Damien threatened, “and I will not hesitate to kill you.” Jameson tilted his head to the side, chuckling. “I was not there to watch you grow up. Not that any of that is my fault since you didn’t hesitate to throw me in prison when you had the chance. The one thing I’m glad about is that you grew up to be a proper man.

Chapter Eighty-Three

Lauren's POV “I did no such thing,” I denied as I shifted against the armrest of the couch. “Not on purpose, at least.” “From what I heard, just days after your wedding, you were kidnapped and taken away. That put enough stress on him, and as if that was not enough, your death was faked. After that, you came back into his life with a child that you ended up losing after getting shot. “All that happened right after my brother was shot. He was shot because he wanted to step away from the family business, which wanted to do for you.” “I don’t—” “If there’s any part of the story that I got wrong, do let me know.” He smirked at me, knowing that I could not dispute it as untrue. It left me wondering just how much he knew and who had given him that information all so soon. I knew that asking him about it would yield no results because he was already waiting for my answer and was not going to back down. “None of it was my fault,” I defended.

Chapter Eighty-Four

Lauren's POV The sound of Damien’s gun cocking had Jameson looking in his direction with his hands mockingly raised in surrender. “I’m done with her, brother. You can come down and give me back my gun,” he said to Damien, who walked down the stairs and glared at his brother with murderous intent. “Step away from her,” he commanded Jameson, who still stood by me without moving, almost as if he was silently daring his brother to do something about it. “Are you going to get your special doctor to treat me as well, or is Darla the only member of your family that you care about?” Jameson asked him. “And why do you need my help all of a sudden?” Damien asked him, tilting his head. “Last I checked, you never appreciated any form of help from you. You refused any visits while you were in prison, and you came here to terrorize everyone that I care about. Why should I offer you help?” Jameson stared at his brother for a moment as he placed a hand over the

Chapter Eighty-Five

Lauren's POV There was a high chance that I would die at Jameson’s dinner party the more I put my thought into it. For one, I had gone there with his brother, who shared bad blood with him but he still loved enough to warn me about. And now… Now, he was holding my hand and staring at me, waiting for me to give him an explanation on what I had with his son before I got married to his brother. “Jameson, what do you think you’re doing?!” Damien yelled at him as a group of men held Damien down on a couch after the rest of the family went out through the back door, probably to where the main party was being held. I turned to see that even Darla was being held down against another couch with a knife being held against her neck. “Relax, little brother. You already had a fair share of fun when you shot me at your house and told me to leave. Let’s not forget that you’re in my house now, which means that you have to go by my rules,” Jameson reminded him before turning

Chapter Eighty-Six

Lauren's POV Darla had a bullet between her brows, and Jameson was right behind the gun that had killed her, his eyes filled with confusion and realization of what he had just done to his sister. There was so much silence that I was afraid of looking in Damien’s direction. I could feel the anger reeling off of him and rubbing off on me in waves that the only thing I wanted to do was stand up and bolt for the door. “What… What have you done?” I asked, but my voice was stuck in my throat, leaving the words in the air like a whisper in the wind. Jameson, as if suddenly realizing what he had done and the gravity of it, moved away from his sister’s silent body on the couch with the hand that held the gun falling to his side. “Let go of me,” Damien said to the goons who had been holding him down against the couch, and there was something in his tone that made them let go of him with immediate effect. Damien stood on the couch for a moment as his brothe

Chapter Eighty-Seven

Lauren's POV I had neither seen nor talked to Damien since he had announced that he would burn everything to the ground with his brother and he locked himself up in the private office in his house. I had fallen asleep in the bedroom while waiting for him to figure out if he was okay, and I found myself still alone in the bedroom when I opened my eyes. “Damien?” I called, rubbing my eyes as I weakly got off the bed and stumbled towards the office to finally knock on the door after putting it off the whole time. “Damien, are you in there? It’s morning,” I announced. It didn’t take much time before he opened the door and stood in front of me with hazy eyes that made me frown in suspicion at the familiar smell of alcohol coming off of him. “You drank,” I stated, still waiting for him to confirm it even when I knew the truth. “I drank.” He nodded. “Are you okay? Hungover? Do you need anything?” I asked as he stepped aside for me to walk in.

Chapter Eighty-Eight

Lauren's POV “You killed them,” I said as soon as I saw Damien making his way up the stairs of the basement. I knew he was not the kindest man in the world, but I didn’t think that he would go down there and kill them without a thought even though they had it coming. “Don’t worry about it, Lauren. You’ve had a long day. I think you need to get some rest. They’ll be taken out of here and disposed of when you’re asleep,” he assured me, completely missing the point of my worry. “No, Damien.” I shook my head. “I’m not worried about Katarina or Santino. I’m not worried about whether they’re dead or alive. I’m worried about you. What if this whole event turns you into something you’re not?” “Something I’m not?” he chuckled. “And what’s that supposed to mean?” I knew that he didn’t mean it as a dare for me to tell him something that he would challenge me for, but that didn’t make it any easier for me to talk to him about. What if he shut down and closed

Chapter Eighty-Nine

Lauren's POV It was well into the evening when Damien walked into the living room, rubbing the bridge of his nose and shaking his head. He only stopped when he saw me, but it was only a moment as he continued his walk to the stairs. “You’re not even going to talk to me about it?” I asked, causing him to freeze in his steps and sigh. “How do you feel? I’m sorry I left you all the way at home without telling you about it, but I called before I found you asleep. I needed to get things off my mind, and I didn’t want to have to take another bottle of alcohol—” “That doesn’t matter right now, Damien.” I shook my head, refusing to make any attempt at walking towards him because I knew that he was not ready for that. “I called you earlier, right after I saw all the missed calls.” “I didn’t know that. My phone was not with me throughout the day,” he admitted. I stayed there in silence for a brief while, wondering if he was going to at least admit that he

Chapter Ninety

Lauren's POV “Are you seriously going to accept help from the man whose brother you killed? I mean, don’t you think it’s suspicious enough that he wants nothing from you in return but whatever thrill he claims he will have?” I asked Damien after Logan was escorted out of the house. “I don’t trust him,” Damien admitted, “but it is better to keep my enemies close, especially when they’re the ones who offered it.” I remained quiet because I knew he was right, but I still had a bad feeling about it. When we were done with dinner, he asked me to stay with him and have a short conversation. “I don’t want to go to bed just yet,” he said. “Do you have anything you want to talk to me about?” “I should be asking you that question, Damien. You haven’t spoken to me about how you feel ever since you watched what happened with Darla in front of your eyes. You haven’t bothered to confide in me—” “That would be nothing but a burden to you. It’s why I went to see
