LucyI couldn’t say how long it was before I could stand to talk. I told the officers what I could remember, and they left me in David’s care. He took me to a nearby café, draping his jacket over my shoulders. I watched him from the seat by the window as he ordered our drinks. He came back and set a tall steaming cup in front of me. I didn’t know what it was, but it didn’t matter. I wrapped my hands around it, enjoying the way the heat seemed to seep into my hands. I took deep breaths, shuddering as I tried to calm down. David sat beside me and pulled me close, sharing his body heat, but he didn’t press me to say anything or eat. I looked at the small tray of sweets in front of me and my lips twitched. “You… hate chocolate,” I said. David chuckled and took a sip from his drink. “They’re not for me.”My lips trembled. “Do you… Do you still like lemon?”“I do,” he said. “And you? Peaches?”I nodded slowly. I shuddered and looked up at him. “Thank you… f-for saving me.”He smiled and

MattAfter Tony announced that exile was the other option, the whole room went silent. Our nanny went pale. “Where’s the luna?” Someone asked. “Lucy is off taking classes and getting treatment,” Tony said. “In the meantime, I’m making it a priority to clean up the pack and figure out how the hell she was taken in the first place.”His heart didn’t skip when he lied, but I could see that no one really believed him. There were a few people who seemed a little disgruntled as if they knew he was lying. “Alpha, do you want your report now?” Our beta said. His chin was lifted and his heart was calm. “Yes,” Tony said. “Since we’re on the topic.”“They say that she’s doing well. The poison is mostly out of her system, but they want to keep her a bit longer for observation… They still don’t know what kind of poison it was.”Tony nodded. Our nanny’s shoulders seemed to relax. I felt her relief and the belief begin to build through the whole pack. It seems that it’s still true: if you can g

MattWe walked downstairs and opened the door. There was a group of official-looking people accompanied with a tall, willowy woman who smelled like chamomile and wore a lot of yellow. There were a bunch of flowers in her hair. She looked more like a nymph from human mythology than a witch. She looked around with wide eyes as her two companions looked at us. “We’re here on behalf of the Council and the Inter-Species Liaison.” Each of them extended a thick envelope toward us. “You’re being charged with several criminal charges, including human trafficking and deadly assault, on the human and the supernatural side. We’re here to bolster your human and supernatural representation against the organization pressing charges against you.”I grimaced. “What human organization?” Tony asked. “Liberation Front.”I had never heard of them. I took the envelope offered to me. His eyes narrowed. “And the supernatural charges?”“Several counts of assault and related human trafficking charges.”I

LucyDavid offered me the last pastry as he finished sipping his coffee. Even though I ate it, my stomach grumbled. He chuckled. “Hungry?”My face heated. “I’m okay.”He said nothing for a moment before cupping my face and turning me gently to meet his gaze. His eyes narrowed a bit as he seemed to stare right into me. I felt my heart speeding up as I looked up at him.“You know… it’s okay to say that you need things,” David said gently. His gaze softened. “It’s perfectly okay to ask for them too.”I swallowed. My eyes burned as he smiled gently and tapped my chin. “I was going to get something eat. You’re welcome to join me, if you want, or I can walk you back to the campus. Whichever would make you happy.”My heart trembled and while I was still shaken by the attack. My body still hurt; I didn’t want to head back just yet. David was… familiar in a way that I hadn’t realized that I needed. “Dinner… sounds great.”His eyes brightened. “How do you feel about pizza?”I frowned and til

LucyI had no idea what David meant when he said a bit of everything, but after the fourth pizza was brought to our table, I really wished I had just chosen something to try. “David… isn’t this a bit too much?” I asked. He grinned. “Wait until the drink comes.”I frowned and went still before looking down the way toward where the woman was coming back with a giant glass bowl filled with something that seemed to bubble and spew clouds of mist. She set it on the table with a beaming smile before placing a set of metal straws and a set of spoons that look like broomsticks on the table. “You two enjoy!”“How… are we supposed to eat all of this?” I asked looking at him. “One bite at a time.”I stuck my tongue out at him and he laughed before gabbing one of the serving utensils. “Which one would like to try first? A classic? Something more daring?”“Classic, I guess.” He served me a giant slice of pizza covered in round red disks before serving himself. The slice took up most of the pla

Lucy“But---”He slipped into an alleyway, and I saw a flash of light. Then, I heard nothing else. The car glided past the alleyway, and it was empty. He must have used his portal to leave. I flopped back in my seat and looked down at the bag. I couldn’t stop smiling though. I felt warm. When we reached the building, I headed up to my room. Tina popped out of her door with a sly grin. “I was told you were out with a delicious looking young man! Spill!”My face heated. “It wasn’t like that. He’s a friend of mine from the orphanage…”“You’re awfully late getting back from just meeting with a friend,” she said before slipping back inside. “Though I suppose I’ll let you---Is that from Cursed Slices?”“Yes.”Tina’s eyes twinkled with knowing. “I’ll leave you alone… for now. Tell me how the cake is, hm?”

LucyEveryone else seemed excited, but I still didn’t know what that was. “Is it… going to hurt?”He shook his head. “It’s a place filled with games, fun, and prizes. What do you say?”He looked over my head. “Lucy’s never been to an arcade.”One of the girls squealed. “Then, we definitely have to go!”He smiled and wiggled his eyebrows. “It’s not that far of a bus ride away… Or we could drive if you’re okay with that?”I looked back at everyone else and nodded. “Let’s go, then.”He punched the air as everyone clapped and we headed out. We walked through a barrier to a nearby bus station. Soon, we were on the bus, then transferring onto a train. Listening to everyone talk about their favorite games made me smile. It was hard not to smile with how excited they all looked. I thought back to when I heard about people go

LucyDavid nodded. “One of them is a member of his pack. The other is a rogue.”He shook his head. “Sorry, that it turned into this, but did you at least enjoy the part before the fight?”I smiled at him. “It’s the best… and maybe if we play a few more rounds, we’ll forget all about it.”He grinned back. “Deal.”The weekend passed in a blur. We got back so late on Friday night that I didn’t even have a chance to read anyone’s messages. Tina and Stacey teased me most of the morning on Saturday, but they let me do my homework in peace. By the time Monday came. The drama of the fight seemed like it happened so long ago. I had to focus on my first physical training class, and it was starting to make me think that there was no way I was going to make it as an officer.“Keep going! You’ve still got thirty seconds.”I could barely breat

MattI sat on the couch in my room, staring blankly at my phone. If I saw another legal document or heard another charge, I was going to scream. My wound had closed, but it still ached.  My heart was beating steadily, but my head was a mess. The guilt and desperation I wanted to feel about Lucy wasn’t there. I kept thinking it was because we didn’t have a bond, but it felt like a lie the more I thought about it. I had to face it. We had to face it. Lucy didn’t leave because she didn’t feel safe. She left because she didn’t want to be here because she wasn’t our mate. I got to my feet, pacing back and forth. My thoughts were turning and turning. The weight of knowing that, feeling that, and being unable to tell Tony that felt like it was crushing me. We had been looking for Lucy and lying to the pack for too long, but we didn’t have a clue. The lawyers were here every day to talk about the case, but there still was

TonyMatt turned and stomped out leaving me reeling there alone with his words. The anger in me was still boiling, but I couldn’t block out his words. He was…. He was right. We didn’t know. How could we know that dad would come back even remotely sane? How could we know if we weren’t just a few steps behind him in sanity?I shuddered and sank into my seat. The silence of the study felt so heavy that I couldn’t move. The pain potions faded and the pain returned. The exhaustion of having waited up all night for Matt, flipping through the journals was dragging at me.  A knock sounded on the door. “Come in.”The door opened and our nanny walked in with a tray of hot chocolate and most of breakfast. She entered the room with a gentle smile. There was also a stack of bandages on the tray.I couldn’t help but smile weakly back at her. "Tony, my dear, it's time to change your bandages," she sai
