Lucy“Are you Lucy Graves?” I looked up at the official looking woman. David grew stiff beside me. “Who are you?” David asked. I looked between the two. She lifted her chin. “I work for the Council.”“Then you should know that you have to formally introduce yourself: name, badge number, and position.”She scowled at him. Her eyes flashed, and I drew back. I realized that she had to be a werewolf.“She won’t be talking to you until you do,” David said, glaring at her. “I suggest you follow protocol.”She huffed. “Petty Officer Helen Korte, ID L-25809-90. I’m here to deliver an official summons. Now, are you, Lucy Graves?”I glanced at David who seemed to be eyeing her suspiciously, but he met my gaze and nodded. “Yes.”She threw the paper at me and walked off grumbling. “I’m reporting you for mis

LucyAfter the test was over, things kind of went back to normal. A few days passed and I could focus on my studies again. One day, while I was heading home from the college campus, I ran into David. He was dressed in a three-piece suit. His hair was slicked back and he looked a little angry while he was on the phone. The moment he saw me, the anger vanished and his entire expression brightened. My heart fluttered as he finished his call and walked towards me. “You look… official,” I said. “Is everything okay?”He nodded. “Pack stuff. It’s done now. Done with classes?”I nodded. “They let us out early today.”“Care for lunch?” He asked. “You have afternoon classes, right? We don’t have to go far.”My stomach grumbled and I wrinkled my nose. I nodded. “Sounds great… We don’t have to get on a bus, do we? I’d hate for your

LucyI turned around to look at the woman who was trying to yank away from David. The people passing by had stopped to watch. They murmured between themselves as the woman kept screaming for David to let her go.“David, what’s going on?”“She was about to grab you by your hair,” David explained. “Who are you, and what do you want?”She shoved at him and snarled. “This is none of your business! Stay out of it if you know what’s good for you.”“I’m not going to just let you attack someone. Who are you and what do you want?”“It wasn’t enough that you stole Tony, now you’ve picked up someone else, huh?” She sneered. “You’re worse than a homewrecker, you worthless, desperate little nobody!”My eyes widened, and I cringed. How many exes did Tony and Matt have?David threw her hand down. “Don’t talk about her like

LucyAs I walked across the campus, the warm afternoon sun cast a golden glow on the surroundings. I couldn't help but smile, swinging the bag carrying the shoes that David had bought me. The spiciness of the taco was still tingling on my tongue, but I couldn’t be happier. I sat in my usual seat, looking at the bag. My thoughts drifted to a time long ago when David and I were just children at the orphanage. We didn't have much, but we made the best of what we had.I remembered there were days we would play outside, running barefoot on the grass to make sure that our shoes lasted a little longer. When there were new shoes to pass out, David always gave me the better shoes, even if it meant he had to go without.I smiled at the thought and how far we’d come. In my mind, I could still see him as a little boy gluing the soles of his shoes back together or tying them together with shoelaces from old shoes. The day that I had been adopted, I&rs

LucyI didn’t understand. “Hey,” Duke whispered in my ear. “It’s alright. It’s still just the first assignment. And it can’t be that bad, right?”I turned the page to him and he frowned. “That… can’t be right.” He pointed at one of the questions. “I had the same answer for that question and mine was marked right.”My jaw trembled as a bit of hope filled me. I looked at Duke’s page and saw it coded ‘B’. Mine was coded ‘A’.“Would you mind checking your answers against mine, Amy?” I asked. “You got the one labeled Exam A, right?”Amy nodded and took my paper. We went question by question, but it made no sense. The answers matched up almost perfectly. I couldn't help but feel relieved. I hadn’t done as bad as I thought. Amy frowned. “The T.A. just used the wrong answer key. That’s th

DavidAs I drove down the familiar streets towards my home, my mind was still preoccupied with thoughts of Lucy. Her infectious laughter echoed in my ears, and I couldn't help but smile. It was just like it had been when we were kids but better. I didn’t have to tape or glue shoes together to give her something better to walk on. I could just provide for her. My wolf growled with a deep sense of satisfaction at the thought. I was an alpha and I was providing for someone I cared about. Someone I loved. When I thought about how her eyes sparkled when she laughed, a wide grin stretched across my face. Things were going well between us. I still didn't have her phone number or any way to directly contact her outside of the school system. I couldn't help but wonder when she would finally share it with me, but I pushed that thought aside. Lucy had been through a lot. She deserved the space to get her bearings before taking on any more stress.P

DavidWhen I entered the room, the two representatives from the Council looked up with hard expressions. They looked like the wanted to say something. Then, I noticed that they didn’t even have glasses of salt water in front of them. Blue, my house manager and the wife of my beta, looked pissed off.  I smiled at her. “Thank you, Blue,” I said. “I’ll be fine.”She glanced at the Council and pushed the cart full of refreshments towards the seat left for me. Trent was grinning and drinking Blue’s lemonade. She left with a scowl in their direction. “I don’t appreciate you irritating my pack members,” I said taking a seat and pouring myself a glass of lemonade. “Makes my job a bit harder, and Blue is our saving grace around meal times.”“She’s rude and disrespectful,” one of them said. “It’s a wonder she hasn’t been put in her place.”

LucyAfter Duke, Amy, and Michelle dropped me off back at the dorms, I tried to get my mind off everything. It was just too much to think about, and if I kept dwelling on it, I’d never get anything done, so I got into my room, locked my door, and pulled out all of my textbooks and notes. The GED test would be at the end of the month. I would figure out how to get my grades corrected so that I could sit for the test, but I had to be sure that I would pass it first, or I really would have to take the class all over again. I started with my math homework, going back over my notes and hoping that O As much as I tried to focus on the math problems, the numbers and letters started to blend together. My mind felt hazy. I tried to fight the sleepiness and focus, but the lines grew blurry, and soon, everything wen t dark. When I opened my eyes again, I found myself running through a dense forest. It wasn’t the same forest from my visions, but so

LucyThe air went still. It seemed that I had shocked her as the storm cut out and we were dropped back into the clearing. The light in her necklace dimmed as she stared at me. She looked down then met my gaze again. “It is what your mother wanted for you,” she said. I flinched at that. Something in the back of my mind screamed. “It is what you were born to do, Lucy. That may seem hard now, but if you accept it, you will be much happier.”I thought about the day Matt and Tony had bought me. How I had told myself that I could accept whatever they were going to do to me. How I accepted everything, they’d done to me: the sex, the changes to my hair, the fear that I had tried to ignore, the role that I had tried to make myself be able to do, and the anger in me turned cold. I narrowed my eyes at her. “Happy?” I asked. “Did I look happy in that vision?”“How could you not be hap

LucyI entered the campus coffee shop; a woman twirled her finger in the air, making a line of coffee pots rotate in the air before she greeted me. Then, I saw Duke. He lifted his hand, looking as tired as I felt. I crossed the room to him and looked up at the menu. “My treat. You like chocolate, right?” “You don’t have to.”He waved his hand. “Go find us a booth away from windows.”I hesitated as he stepped up to order, but I did as he asked, finding a small booth at the back of the café away from the windows and the baristas. Soon, he joined me at the table. He set one of the tall cups in front of me and set his own cup in front of his seat as he sunk into the booth across from me. With a flick of his wrist, Duke whispered a few i
