Chapter 71: Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)

Her lips trembled and then she whispered, "Evan Elijah Sterling." I nodded with my heart constricting, mighty glad she hadn’t thought to erase me from their lives. Taking a few strides forward, I went to stand about a foot away from her."I know now—I know now why you left…”“What?! You didn’t know why I left?! Your mum—” she exclaimed then paused her beautiful eyes shone with shock, and then her lovely trimmed eyebrows furrowed as she held my gaze. I shook my head.“I swear it to you, baby, I didn’t know when we met at Jacob’s party. And I am so sorry, beautiful," I said. “I am so sorry, I wasn’t there to protect you. I am so sorry for trusting the wrong person to look out for you… Estera. I am so sorry that you felt you had to run from me and have our children alone—”She rushed at me and I wrapped my arms around her, pressing a kiss on the crown of her head. I held her tightly to my body. "I am so sorry for what they did to you. I am so so sorry, my love," I repeatedly whisper as I

Chapter 72: Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)

“Doctor Ashley Benjamin and Doctor Ameera Rasheed, ladies, meet my… husband; Rolland, and Adrian’s dad, Evan Sterling,” Estera said, sounding bewildered. "So, it is true!" Ashley exclaimed."He married you!" Ameera interjected. "I knew it!" "Ladies!" Estera said, gesturing to me with her chin. The two doctors directed their gazes at me, flashing an overly bright smile, and they waved comically. “G - good evening—” Ashley stuttered."It is — um nice, meeting you--" Ameera croaked."--Again, you mean, Dr. Rasheed and Dr. Benjamin," I said interrupting her. "Again," they both chorused, nodding their heads. The guilt in their eyes was palpable. "I hate to run, but I need to get in there before they send Antony’s thug to come get me. Please, keep the twins away from them," I said to the three, settling my gaze on Estera, holding her eyes for about a minute. She looked so beautiful and I missed her dreadfully. Before I could change my mind, I closed the distance between us, framed her

Chapter 73: Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)

The entire room went very quiet and then my mother dropped a kiss on Mary Antoinette's forehead and said, "We will wait outside, darling, and join you as soon as the doctor calls us back in, okay?”"Okay," Mary Antoinette replied. My mum left her side, walked up to Antony Dallas, and said, "Come now, it would just be for a few minutes. We have come a long way for this. Let's give the doctors the space they need."Reaching for Anastasia's hand she pulled the other woman and ushered her towards the door, Antony followed, albeit reluctantly. I was about to follow when Mary Antoinette said, "Can my husband stay, please?""We will call everyone back inside in a few minutes. We just need to speak with you alone--" the doctor said. I flashed Mary Antoinette a smile, ignored the fucker, and walked outside. A nurse came to usher us to a private waiting room just across Mary Antoinette's room and something told me this was done on purpose.About fifteen minutes later, a nurse came to call us ba

Chapter 74: Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)

When a nurse came in to usher Antony and Anastasia Dallas out of the room, Estera flashed a smile in Mary Antoinette's direction and said, "Excuse me, the nurses will come in now to take your vitals and take you for some test. It might take a while so I suggest you consider spending the night.""I'm ready for whatever you need, Dr. Roberts. Thank you!'"Good," she said, nodded and turned to leave."Doctor, may I have a minute, please--" my mom said and I jerked a gaze in her direction. "Oh, okay," Estera said and left, my mom followed her and I immediately moved to go after them, trying to brush off Mary Antoinette's plea for me to stay awhile. But in order not to seem too obvious, I went to drop a kiss on her forehead and told her I would only be gone for a minute. "Thank you for sticking around. I know you don't see eye-to-eye with my father--""It's okay, we just do that to keep things interesting." I grinned. She laughed. "Liar. Thank you anyway. I mean it," she said. I nod

Chapter 75: Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)

"Remember my mum was a doctor?" "Yes," I replied, nodding."She operated a private free clinic for homeless and abused teenage girls who can not afford hospital bills. For some of those teenagers, she helped with aborting unwanted pregnancies—""Yes?""Mary Antoinette and Anastasia Dallas were one of her patients but that wasn't the name they used—”"What?!" I exclaimed in disbelief. A gentle knock sounded from the door and Estera winced. I frowned. Foster went to the door, opened it, and stepped outside. I heard him speaking with someone who had come to let him know the Dallas’ were done signing the authorization papers. I framed Estera’s face, peering into her eyes. She searched mine and I could feel her quivering. Foster came back inside, shut the door, and cleared his throat. I sighed. "They are done with the signing. I have to go and meet with them—" he said. "Thank you, Cole, this is not the right place to have this kind of discussion anyway. I think I better get the twins

Chapter 76: Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)

"Don't worry. We are almost home," she said in a shaky voice. I reached for the hand she placed on the gear, interlaced my fingers with hers and lifted it to my lips, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand, I heard her release a shaky breath. I leaned closer to her and pressed a kiss to her temple and felt her shoulder shake as she continued to cry quietly. Soon enough we got to an estate with buildings of similar structures like a suburbia layout, but I knew we were still in New York. Her house was the second to the last by the right, and she drove through an automated gate and parked inside a wide garage. I could see two other cars parked and covered in the expansive space. From the corner of my eye, I saw the garage door lowering locking us in. I pushed the door open and helped to carry the boys inside the house through an adjoining door to the side wall. The house was dimly lit and she put on more light fixtures, leading me up a flight of stairs.I followed her down a wide cor

Chapter 77: Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)

"When I left Charlestown, I went back home to Castle Ridge. My aunt left the property vacant for me. And all of my parents' things, although sorted, were still there. I … I was very um ... sad and needed the connection I could find with my parents for strength. I started to go through my dad's and then my mum's things. I found a video and audio she recorded of some of her patients and I later discovered a pattern. She kept audio recordings of teenagers who ran away from home because their abusers were a parent or guardians. That was where I saw Mary Antoinette's video—" She paused, looking at me. I nodded, understanding the silent message. Mary Antoinette, although not poor or homeless used Estera’s mom’s clinic for anonymity to get rid of an unwanted pregnancy. A pregnancy if I was asked to bet must be for her father. Damn it! I should have seen it! The sighs were there. I have always thought she was too docile with him! "Antony… Was it him?" I said aloud. Estera nodded. "Shit!" Co

Chapter 78: Estera Roberts' POV (Present Time: A few weeks before)

Cole held my gaze after I finished telling my story. He had left the bed to pace back and forth by the bedside, leaving me with my legs drawn up to my chest and my knees serving as props to my chin. I wrapped my arms around my legs, returning his silent scrutiny.“Did you confirm it? The marriage thing?”I shook my head and replied, “I am still in doubt. It’s crazy. I think he would have told me—”“No. He wouldn’t, especially if he was trying to protect you and himself from the marriage or should I say business allegiance his father mentioned.”“You think so?”“Yes. He sounds pretty possessive—like a man who wants what he wants. I doubt he was a pushover. I suppose what he didn’t count on was his father’s trump card—”“Which was sending me away. And making sure I stay away…”“Yes. I am sorry for what you had to go through, Roberts—” Cole said, coming to perch on the edge of the bed, still holding my gaze. He raised a hand to cup my chin and his thumb gently stroked my skin. “It is cle

Chapter 79: Estera Roberts' POV (Present Time)

I still couldn’t believe he was here — right here in my house with my children, or should I say our children? My eyes followed him as he paced back and forth speaking to someone on the phone. And by the sound of it, it appeared the person on the other end was a lawyer. I am still in shock at the possibility of Antony Dallas finding out my mother knew about him and his daughter and had gone ahead to get rid of both her and my father. Who knew if he had intended to wipe out the entire family? That would have been the case if I was also in that car. Perhaps he had figured I was too young to know anything, and that my mother didn’t keep proof. I doubted my mother mentioned the recordings. Maybe those were her own insurance against lawsuits or something equally threatening or perhaps it had been for the girls in case they ever decided to report their abusers and she was called to testify. Whatever her reason or reasons were, I doubt she informed Mary Antoinette. Otherwise, I would defini

Chapter 80: Estera Roberts' POV (Present Time)

"Would you like to eat something?" I asked with my face pressed to his chest. We were both still standing in the middle of the living room, holding onto each other."I will … I just need to calm down a bit," Evan replied against my hair, tightening his hold around me. I took a deep sigh, knowing exactly what he meant."I love the way you smell … " I whispered."I know … you always love the way I smell. My little witch," he rasped. I giggled. "Don't ever run from me again, Estie. I don’t want to live a day again without you … " he said and I felt my body tremble.Tightening my hold on him, I whispered, "I'm sorry. I was scared. It will not happen again.""I love you so much, Estera," he whispered almost to himself. I drew back from him and he ran his fingers through the hair at the back of my head, cupping my skull. He peered deeply into my eyes. "I can't believe we have kids. It's like waking up from a nightmare to the life I want with you." Tears welled in my eyes and I grabbed a fis
