CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

When I walked into Carl's room, I found him standing over his desk, his brow furrowed as he rummaged through a pile of documents and typed furiously on his computer, obviously searching for something. Darkness clouded his eyes, and they looked tired. His mouth was set in a hard line. I knew he was under a lot of stress. This was obviously the point he needed no distraction, and I should probably back off, but for a very strange reason, I was not scared of him. I wanted to hug him so tight, and tell him to let it all out my shoulder. The thoughts quickly escaped my mind, when I heard his voice. "Khloe, I don't have time for this. What did you say you wanted to talk about?" I'd totally forgotten I had already told him there was something important I needed to talk to him about."I'm sorry, is this a bad time?" I asked, feeling a little sheepish. "I could come back later if you need to finish what you're doing." He suddenly turned towards my direction."It is the wrong time, but you are

CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

"Where have you been, Carl?" Mr. Williams frowned at his son, who had just walked into the meeting room several minutes late. "You're never late for these kinds of meetings." Daniel, Carl's younger brother, sat across from their father with a mischievous smile on his face. He crossed his legs and made faces at Carl, clearly enjoying the situation."I'm sorry sir." Carl apologized, as he took the seat next to his brother. He had been in his room, searching through all his documents, and scanning through the files in his system, but couldn't find the document. The only person that had the spare keys to his room, is Nate, and she wouldn't dare betray him, so there was absolutely no need suspecting her. Khloe had visited his room while he was working, but the document was incomplete then, and didn't go missing after she left. So, who could have possibly taken the document, and cleared his system of any existing file. His suspicions were on his brother, who sat next to him looki

CHAPTER FORTY-THREE

Carl returned to his room, his mind racing as he paced back and forth, trying to make sense of the events that had unfolded just hours before. "How could the document he had painstakingly worked on for hours vanish without a trace?" he pondered. His suspicions were turned towards Nate, the only person who could have possibly made it disappear. He quickly grabbed his phone and called Nate, who arrived 15 minutes late, something she wouldn't have done, except if something important came up, which held her.Why are you only showing up now?" Carl asked, his piercing gaze boring into her eyes as if seeking a hidden truth. Nate's apologetic words tumbled out hastily, "I'm so sorry." Her head remained bowed, her eyes darting away from Carl's intense stare, fearful he might uncover the secrets she concealed. "Look at me, Nate," Carl's commanding tone sent a shiver down her spine, his voice echoing through her mind. Her knees wobbled, threatening to buckle, but she mustered the strength to ste

CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR

"I didn't take it, Mr. Carl," I blurted out as soon as I entered his room, after hesitating for what felt like an eternity outside his door. I had debated whether to turn the handle, ring the bell, or simply stand there until my phone rings again, summoning me to his room one more time. Finally, I mustered the courage to twist the knob to the right and push the door open. It was totally wrong of me because I should have knocked. What if he was naked? The thought of him being naked made my heart race and my veins tingle, a sudden shiver running down my spine. The room felt eerily cold, but maybe it was just my own nervousness that made it feel that way. Carl sat at the edge of the bed, his feet tapping gently on the marble tiles. My gaze traveled up from his feet to his chiseled face, which seemed perfect even in its imperfections. But then, our eyes met, and I was frozen by the icy intensity of his stare. It was as if he was ready to pounce on me like a predator, if I took an

CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE

I honestly didn't want to be part of what ever is going on presently in the Bradfords' house. It's definitely their problem, and not mine. I had mine waiting for me outside this mansion, and I needed to get to mum and aunt Kim before Mr. Daniel returns. As I approached the front entrance of the Bradford's mansion, Nate suddenly emerged from nowhere, her slender figure blocking my path like a barricade. Her piercing gaze seemed to bore into my soul, making my heart race with frustration. I felt like screaming, 'What is the meaning of this?!' but my voice remained trapped in my throat, silenced by the oppressive tension that filled the air. "I didn't do anything,' I protested, my words barely audible over the pounding of my pulse. She hasn't said anything yet, but I knew why she stood in my way. Nate's expression remained impassive, her arms crossed over her chest like a shield, her stance unyielding as a stone statue. "Where to?" she asked finally, her voice dripping with a cas

CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

"Kh...l...oe" Mum weakly called out, her voice barely audible, as she stretched her hands forward to rest on mine. She smiled faintly, and I forced a smile back, trying to hide my tears. Mum looked so frail, her eyes sunken, and her face etched with pain. I bit back a sob, knowing she wouldn't want to see me cry. I needed to be strong for her. "Mum," I whispered, "How are you feeling?" My question was pointless, as her condition was obvious, but I had to ask. "I am better," she replied, her voice laced with a hint of determination. I know she wasn't getting any better, but what was I expecting her to say to me? I turned my face away, struggling to conceal the anguish in my eyes. Aunt Kim stood frozen in the doorway, her grip on the mug tightening, like she drew strength from it. Her gaze was vacant, lost in thought. I turned back to my mom, my voice barely above a whisper. "How do you really feel?" I pleaded, knowing she was hiding her true suffering from me. I wanted her to be hone

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

I was jolted awake by the unremitting ringing of my office phone, piercing through the silence like a siren. My heart sank as I saw Daniel's name flashing on the screen, my boss's name synonymous with trouble. I knew I was just better dead than alive! and was torn between answering the call and ignoring it, hoping Daniel and whatever the problem is would magically disappear. But the ringing persisted, shattering the peaceful atmosphere. My gaze fell on my mom's serene face, her chest rising and falling with each gentle breath. The thought of her looking like that in a coffin flashed through my mind, and I instantly regretted it, scolding myself for the ghoulish idea. The phone rang again, snapping me back to reality. "How dare you, you low-wreck!!!" He bellowed. Daniel's anger was easily perceived even through the phone, his voice thundering as soon as I answered. The tone of his voice, leaving me speechless and wondering what I had done wrong this time."Get yourself back here in th

CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT

I found myself pacing in Carl's room, my teeth, nervously chewing on my nails. How did I even get here? One moment I was facing Daniel's wrath, the next I was stepping into the elevator, heading to Carl's floor. He emerged from the bathroom, wearing a robe, and my eyes instinctively darted away, my cheeks flushing. "We need to talk," I blurted out, trying to compose myself. "What is it, Khloe?" he asked, his tone hinting at amusement. I sensed a tease in his voice and felt a surge of annoyance. He's my boyfriend, albeit pretend, but still... my mind raced with thoughts, my hands aching to touch his perfect body. "I apologize," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "For?" he asked, his eyes narrowing slightly, his gaze piercing through me."You do want to know how it feels, don't you?" Normally, his directness would leave me flustered, but this time, it had a strange, thrilling effect on me. "What do you mean?" I stuttered, my voice barely audible. I could sense his proximity,

CHAPTER FORTY-NINE

My heart stopped. What does Aunt Kim mean by an emergency? Another emergency like the one that freaked her out earlier, thinking mum was going to die? Or worse emergency? More Panic set in as I repeatedly dialed her number, only to be met with silence - her phone was off. Helplessness washed over me, trapped at work with no way to escape. Daniel wouldn't let me leave. Even if I could leave work, there was no way I would be able to locate the hospital. My mind raced with unanswered questions: How dire was mom's condition? When did things take a turn for the worse? Could I sneak away unnoticed? The uncertainty was suffocating. "I'm so sorry, mom," I whispered under my breath, my desperation palpable. I redialed Aunt Kim's number, my persistence finally rewarded when she answered, her voice a lifeline in my moment of despair. "Khloe baby" No one could possibly understand the relieve that washed through my body the moment I heard Aunt's voice."With the doctor's help, I was able to cove

CHAPTER FIFTY

"Good morning, Sir," I greeted, as I placed the steaming mug of coffee on Daniel's side table. I stood tall, my skirt falling just below my knees, my white blouse crisp and my blazer tailored to perfection. My name tag gleamed on my lapel. Despite how professional I looked, my eyes told a different story - heavy, swollen, and red from a sleepless night, haunted by the ominous words of Aunt Kim and the weight of my mother's illness.Daniel, lost in his own thoughts, didn't notice my distress at first, too focused on preparing for his meeting with his father. "Khloe, I have a meeting with my dad this morning. By 6:30pm, the both of us will be heading to my usual club," he said, his sleeves rolled up in preparation. But then, his gaze met mine. "What's wrong?" he asked, his concern unexpected.I hesitated, taken aback by his sudden concern, "My mom is really sick," I revealed, my voice barely above a whisper. "I need to be with her." The words felt like a dam breaking, releasing a torre
