CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

I was jolted awake by the unremitting ringing of my office phone, piercing through the silence like a siren. My heart sank as I saw Daniel's name flashing on the screen, my boss's name synonymous with trouble. I knew I was just better dead than alive! and was torn between answering the call and ignoring it, hoping Daniel and whatever the problem is would magically disappear. But the ringing persisted, shattering the peaceful atmosphere. My gaze fell on my mom's serene face, her chest rising and falling with each gentle breath. The thought of her looking like that in a coffin flashed through my mind, and I instantly regretted it, scolding myself for the ghoulish idea. The phone rang again, snapping me back to reality.

"How dare you, you low-wreck!!!" He bellowed. Daniel's anger was easily perceived even through the phone, his voice thundering as soon as I answered. The tone of his voice, leaving me speechless and wondering what I had done wrong this time.
