CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

"Kh...l...oe" Mum weakly called out, her voice barely audible, as she stretched her hands forward to rest on mine. She smiled faintly, and I forced a smile back, trying to hide my tears. Mum looked so frail, her eyes sunken, and her face etched with pain. I bit back a sob, knowing she wouldn't want to see me cry. I needed to be strong for her.

"Mum," I whispered, "How are you feeling?" My question was pointless, as her condition was obvious, but I had to ask.

"I am better," she replied, her voice laced with a hint of determination. I know she wasn't getting any better, but what was I expecting her to say to me? I turned my face away, struggling to conceal the anguish in my eyes. Aunt Kim stood frozen in the doorway, her grip on the mug tightening, like she drew strength from it.
