71. Annoying questions

Although it’s cold outside as it’s the middle of winter and we’re nearing Christmas already, my palms are covered in sweat, cold sweat. My heart thuds violently in my chest, and my breathing is coming shallow. “Just breathe. It’s going to be fine. You can do this,” I tell myself, trying to boost the confidence I had only hours ago. For three days I have known for sure that I would be coming here. But actually standing here right now does make me feel a little nauseous.“He’s going to kill us. We’re so dead. You’re all insane! Do you really want him to chop our heads off? Maybe not yours, Amelia. As you’re his mate, but for sure our four heads will be chopped off and rolls the streets or will be put on a stake or something, just like Geoffrey did with his enemies in Game of Thrones. I’d rather keep my head. I’m very fond of it staying right where it is. You can’t do this shit. Why on earth would you want to do this? And why on earth do you so obviously want me dead? I mean, I get it,

72. Mirror

Walking through these pack grounds feels so right and familiar and yet so wrong. I can’t even put my finger on what it is. The further we reach into the grounds, the more the buildings change around us. This isn’t anything like the buildings in the city, but it’s far different from the Black-moon grounds, too. By the buildings you can see there’s a lot of history but also money here. Some of the buildings look as if they have jumped out of a totally different era. Huge old brick buildings looking extremely pompous. The people who lived here must have had a lot of money and power.Nearing the pointed out main house, our eyes widen in awe and fascination. It’s a huge mansion surrounded by heavy gates, a lot of green, the garden trimmed and sculptured to perfection. Who on earth lives here? After passing the gates and having walked up a light grey gravelled path, we’re standing at the stairs of the main entrance, with winding brick bannisters on both sides. “Scan the area, with your abi

73. Tests

A deep satisfied grin appears on the Alpha’s face. I have no idea what I had expected in this situation, but for sure, not this sort of reaction. Still leaning leisurely against his desk, he takes in my entire reaction and laughs at the warriors on the ground scrambling frightened away from me on all fours as fast as possible, without leaving me once out of their sight. Their eyes torn wide open in terror.“You can go,” he tells them. “And close the door again. With my mouth gaping at him, I can’t believe how calm he’s staying.“Amelia! Amelia, are you ok?” I hear Tonya worried over the mind link. “I’m fine for the moment,” I reply as calmly as possible while still trying to make some sort of sense out of this Alpha’s behaviour.“Are you sure? We felt your distress and a surge of power.” She tells me, and then as if someone could listen in, her voice quietens down. “And something is going on here too, just before we felt you.”“What do you mean?” I ask worriedly.“Things got more ten

True Queen? This guy has to be insane. My mouth opens to speak, but I can’t think about anything sensible to reply. Tristan’s hands cup my face, and I feel the urge to slap them away, but supress it, not wanting to cause more trouble for the others outside. As if Jax could feel my discomfort, he tries to get through to me."Amelia, please just let me know how you are." "I'm okay, Jax. Don't worry. I just need more time." I quickly send him over mind link before shutting down again, knowing he’s going to protest about it.Tristan noticed my short absence but doesn’t say anything about it. Instead, he goes back to studying my face. “It’s remarkable. We have many paintings of our Queen Ann, this one here is the biggest one. You look like you just jumped out of one of the portraits. But I don’t understand as the connection to your pack, the rest of her late bloodline, died out about eighteen years ago. Every single one was eradicated. My father searched everywhere for anyone who could

75. Trespassing

My eyes linger on Tristan, and I can see he is fully in his element speaking fully engaged about our apparent hereditary. Again, I have to think about how enthusiastic Tonya would be listening to all of this.“The entire first family was extremely gifted with their power and abilities. Shifting came as second nature right from the start. The power they radiated was above anything following them. They were a family of six, the parents and four children. Each of them had their own nature and characteristics. Some wanted more, wanted to rule, and wanted to make use of their power. Others were generally very calm and caring.”He smiles over his entire face as he leans back and keeps up talking. “Our true Luna, the mother of all, our Queen, she was the most talented of all. Her abilities were beyond anything we know today. She truly cared for every being. Sadly, unlike the others, she didn’t have the ability to heal herself, but instead, she was able to heal others, which would take a toll

76. Pressure

“Tiffany, don’t you dare touch me, I told you this before,” Jax warns with a deep, menacing voice, causing cold shivers to even run down my spine. “And now explain, what the fuck he’s talking about?” Even I don’t want to be on the receiving end of this anger building right now.She scowls at him. “You used me,” she looks upset and starts to pout. “He……he used me and my father. Told us to put pressure on the others so he would become stronger than Drake. He wanted all of the other packs to be at his mercy. I’m engaged to him and his mate. He wanted me to do this. How could I disobey my own mate and Alpha? It’s impossible as you all know,” she declares towards everyone around us, giving off an upset and innocent look. “I did no such thing,” Jax growls angrily at her. “And we’re not engaged anymore, nor are you my mate.”Tiffany gasps at his words. “How can you even say that? All the invitations to our wedding are out. Everyone around here knows we’re engaged.” A tear escapes her eyes,

77. Envelope

Before Jax is able to reply or do anything stupid, I quickly speak up. “Tristan, I’m not going to stay here. And I'm sure not just going to exchange my mate,” I tell him clearly, making sure Jax isn’t going to cause a war right here and now. Jax seems very happy with my response and calms down, but this isn’t what he thinks it is.Of course there’s a lot for me to learn right here, and I’m sure there’s way more history and things about my family, I could find out if I decided to stay here. But what I really need right now is to sort things out for myself and get my mind wrapped around everything I learned today. What I need most of all is distance.Distance to Jax, distance to Tristan, distance to the entire situation. Turning to Jax, I clarify; “I’m coming back to your grounds if you let me under the circumstances. Because I want you to know, even if I come back, I’m not coming back to you right now. If I come along, I want you to respect the distance I need and for you to stay away

78. Numbers

My eyes are glued to the envelope in my hand. Today has been a day with many surprises and revealments. I’m not sure I’m able to take any more for today, I already feel like my head is spinning, and I’m totally nauseous. Jax’s presence right next to me is adding up to this state. My entire body is longing to be close to him, feel him, and be together with him. But in my mind I’m in a total state of mess. I don’t want the mate bond to rule above my deep hurt I’m still feeling. There’s so much more I need to know from him, too. But at the moment I’m not ready to talk to him about any of it.“Aren’t you going to finally look into that letter,” Tonya questions impatiently.“You already know what’s in it anyway. So why don’t you just spit it out already. I think you’re more interested in this than I am anyway. Who truly wants to know if they have a genetic disorder?” I roll my eyes, but I know I agreed to this test. After what I heard today, this shouldn’t really make a huge difference an

79. Fear

“Amelia, can we please talk?” Jax’s question echoes again and again in my head, torturing me. Everything inside of me wants to lose any rational thought and simply give into him. My heart thuds hard in my chest, and my throat feels like it’s a desert as I rasp out the words I need to say. “No Jax. I’m not ready to talk to you.”In front of me, I see the strongest Alpha I have come across, but with those words falling from my lips it looks as if he’s just a shadow of the strong Alpha, broken, and totally defeated. My broken heart shatters a little more at this sight.“I need time. I need time to comprehend everything that has happened. So much has happened in such a short time, whether between us or the things that happened today. Before I can listen to what you have to say, I need time to sort myself out first.” Taking all the strength I can bring up, I look him in the eye, reading myself for the one thing that has been on my mind the entire time. The one thing I do need to know, bef

80. Small price

I try to brace myself for the inevitable impact that’s about to happen. The two guys are so blind in their rage that they don’t even catch on to me jumping in between. It’s only when both bodies crash into mine that they realise and try to back off worriedly as soon as possible. One of my ribs cracks audible from the force of the impact, causing me to wince involuntarily. Both of them shift back immediately and crouch down beside me, with shock and guilt on their faces. This isn’t their fault, I decided to go in between and knew exactly what risk I was taking. If I hadn’t done it, who knows how this fight would have ended? Even if it was only a decision within a brief second, I know if I had time to think about it, as stupid as it may sound, I would have done it anyway. “Oh my god, Amelia,” Jax calls out, horrified. “This is all your fault,” he looks up at Ben in pure rage again, accusing him repeatedly.“My fault?” Ben starts to argue back.“Stop it!” I scream from the top of my lu
