CHAPTER 61

CHARLENE'S POVI thought that the idea made me feel less guilty about lying to him in the first place, but that wasn't quite right either. It was just that I felt better knowing that someone understood me so well, and wanted the same thing for me. I guess you could call that love, though it felt too strong for that. He smiled reassuringly at me. "That won't happen this time. Not as long as you stay honest with me. Even if I have to drag out a confession every step of the way, I promise you, you'll tell me what you feel comfortable telling me. If you keep secrets from me for too long, I'm not sure how much more I can take." I nodded reluctantly. Of course, I trusted his word. He wouldn't lie about something like that. But I didn't think it fair to give him false hope now that he was finally opening up to me about something, especially since I still hadn't shared everything about myself yet. "So," he began after another short silence, "should we go meet the other pack?" I shook my h

CHAPTER 62

CHARLENE'S POVI thought back to all of the times Xavier had told me about nightmares and how helpful it had been to know how to wake him up in case I ever woke up screaming in the middle of the night. I was beginning to wonder if he'd lied to me about all of that. The realization scared me. I never imagined that the only thing I'd ever need from Xavier was a reason to stay alive, because I thought that it would probably kill me to get rid of him. And yet... I felt relieved. I didn't think about him anymore, I didn't imagine how my life would be without him, and even the fact that he might eventually leave me hurt less than it should've. Now all I could feel was… relief? Wasn't that what he wanted anyway? Wasn't that why he'd asked me to marry him? Maybe I didn't need to pretend that all that we had was fake. For the first time in forever, the thought of losing him felt almost pleasant. Not as painful and suffocating as it had once did, thankfully, but still unpleasant nonetheless.

CHAPTER 63

CHARLENE'S POVI heard that Alpha Jaxton's wolf kept on bothering him, that his true mate was actually reincarnated, that he shouldn't waste his precious time to someone undeserving of his love. Although he kept on being stubborn–he began to be intimate with Chandler even though there was no heat in between them. While these events happened every night, I received an invitation for the grand celebration of Vicious Shadow Pack's first luna. I teared up, realizing that it might be over for me. Beta Xavier comforted me and said that he'll accompany me to the ceremony. They thought that this was the chance that I was waiting for–I'll give Chandler a taste of her own medicine.I am initially planning to have the Scarlet Edge Pack's rogues take Chandler as a hostage. Though, my mind changed. I let the rogues have a feast on her, which made Chandler pregnant with some stranger. The child had no relation with Alpha Jaxton at all, which is why she wasn't actually chosen as the pack's luna, Ch

CHAPTER 64

CHARLENE'S POVAfter the ceremony, Selena witnessed how I wanted the Vicious Shadow Pack to suffer in great despair, so she sided with me. She formerly belonged to the Vicious Shadow Pack as one of the common wolves. Not until her entire family was casted away by Alpha Jordan, which led to the death of her parents as they had no source for their basic necessities. So we planned to team up, which gradually removed my curse. She also wants to seek vengeance for the death of her parents, which explains why she bestowed a curse upon her former pack. She can manipulate magic as well, other than creating curses and lifting them. But we have never worked together before this point, because I always keep things from her. I’m afraid that if our bond gets any stronger, I might not be able to control myself when she tries to take over my mind. After all, she is just as much as I am. And since we have no choice but to work together to find out more about the prophecy that will soon fall upon u

CHAPTER 65

CHARLENE'S POV"I want to focus on my plan and forget everything she did to us." Mom nods. Her expression was unreadable. She closed the book she was holding and set it aside. Then she moved over to wrap her arms around me. "I'm glad you had an interesting encounter, then. Maybe you two can come back next week." I smile. "Maybe. Or maybe not. We'll see." Mom just hums noncommittally in response and I turn away. "Thanks for letting me talk it out with you tonight, though. And thank you for trying." She doesn't respond, and I sigh. I don't know why I bother, anyway. It's just not worth the fight. Sometimes, I just hope she'll give up on me soon and let me be alone. I leave to go to bed early after dinner. I don't bother telling mom goodbye before I close the door behind me. It's too early for goodbyes. It's almost 11 o'clock when I lay down and try to sleep. The thoughts racing through my head won't let me rest and I toss and turn until 2:45 am. Then there are the dreams–the nightm

CHAPTER 66

CHARLENE'S POVAfter a long pause. I hear Xavier sigh audibly over the phone. "Okay, then where is she?" I freeze. I thought that I've hidden all traces of our interaction from everyone, who doesn't seem like the type to pry. "Who are you talking about?" I ask. "The girl you were hanging around with yesterday. The one you brought home after the ceremony. The one you told me she pretends that she's the moon goddess." "What are you talking about?" I whisper, suddenly extremely paranoid. Xavier lets out a heavy sigh. "Well, I was wondering how long it's gonna take you to figure it out. I saw her yesterday." "W–wait. What?" I squeak out nervously. Xavier lets out another heavy sigh. "I already told you, I didn't like her." I don't know what's worse; the fact that he didn't like her, or the fact that he still likes her. I take a deep breath. "Why are you telling me all of this anyway? It's not like you care about the outcome. Why don't you just forget about this and move on." "Be

CHAPTER 67

CHARLENE'S POVI don't know why it was so hard to let go of the hug we shared earlier. He really does have an effect on me. Maybe he just needs a little more attention. If only people didn't give me such mixed signals all the damn time. I shake my head mentally, not wanting to get distracted right now. I look around the station, wondering where we are going. It's late afternoon now, the sun is starting to set through the huge windows above us, giving off a warm light which mixes with the cool autumn breeze blowing through here and there. The station is pretty empty. It looks like most people went home hours ago or just came from work early. I can't see anyone else here. He notices me staring and gives me an apologetic look. "Sorry. I guess we got caught up talking." I shrug. "No problem. We're always busy talking anyway." "You're right. So, what did you want to talk about?" I ask him. "We've been talking for weeks now. What do you think you can add today?" My curiosity gets the

CHAPTER 68

CHARLENE'S POVBut he won't. If only he'd let me do that for once. "It's not safe," he says. That catches my attention. It makes me stop dead in my tracks. He takes a deep breath before continuing. "Charlene, there's something I have to show you." "You've shown me plenty of things already," I responded coldly. The last time I saw him he was looking like a kicked puppy. The time before that he was making love to me while he looked on. But when did that change? And why doesn't he seem concerned now? What could I possibly do that would make him act like this? "You can't be serious," he says. "We haven't slept together in nearly a month now. Don't you want to take the risk?" He looks so scared and hurt. I feel a little guilty. After all, it's not like we agreed to never sleep together again. "You know what? F*ck it!" I yell angrily as I start to walk away. I hear the door slam shut behind me and sigh. It really wasn't worth it to come back up. What was I thinking? Maybe I should t

CHAPTER 69

CHARLENE'S POVI know that for a fact. Not that I'd ever say those words out loud anyway. But there are just some moments when it feels like he could read all of my thoughts. It gives me a strange, unsettling feeling. And besides, I can hardly trust myself around him anymore either. My hands tremble as I try to keep them under control while they rest on my knees. I feel as if they're still trembling. That's weird, isn't it? Xavier stares at me quietly, not saying anything. For several seconds we just sit in silence. Until he finally turns away. It seems he has accepted the answer I gave. But what did he expect? Did he think that since he couldn't make me open up, would he go away without letting me know? Well he didn't know me very well then. Or maybe he does and knows the way I react when someone tries to touch me in a tender spot. Either way he didn't do any good. I've had enough touching for today. I don't think it's healthy to let everyone get inside your personal space like th

CHAPTER 70

CHARLENE'S POVI need to focus on the present. The present moment I'll get to spend the next three years with him. My stomach flips again, as if it knows how anxious I really am. I sigh, feeling tired all of sudden. My legs start feeling heavy. Maybe a little fresh air would help. I step out of the house and walk through the backyard and down the street where there are no neighbors to witness my nervousness. Just as I was about to turn onto the road, my cell phone rings, making me jump in surprise. A second later my eyes widen as I recognize that voice. "Hello, Charlene…" She greets quietly as she tries to contain her excitement. "I thought you might like to know that I've found our location. We have enough people now." This is the last chance I have to change my mind and say 'yes' or maybe'. "Okay, but first let me know how things go," I responded. My mouth goes dry as I realize I need to tell him something else right now, even if I don't know if he's willing to take my word ov
