CHAPTER 71

CHARLENE'S POVWhen Selena witnessed the Vicious Shadow Pack to suffer, she thought that everything was over. Selena manipulated all of the academy's vampires, golems, sorcerers, and even the elves. She ordered them to wreak havoc to all of the three standing packs. Of course, a single pack would stand no chance against those creatures. Hence, the three have made up their mind to fight as one until they defeat Selena's army. The Moon Goddess, Selene, blessed the wolves with extra powers during the night of the full moon."Hey, Charlene, are you ready? Are you one of us?" Selena asked. Her tone was cold and her eyes were burning, filled with rage. "It is finally time for your revenge." I looked away from Selena and at the wolf pack gathered at our location, ready for battle. The Moon Goddess blessed the wolves with enhanced abilities after they were bitten by Selena's army. We had to fight together for the sake of others. But I am not one for such battles, nor do I want one. It was a

CHAPTER 72

CHARLENE'S POVShe stroked them gently over my arms like she's done so many times before. The gesture made me feel warm, relaxed, and loved. But the feeling didn't last. She said those words with an uncharacteristic coldness. And it felt so wrong that even with all my senses hyper focused on her scent, I could not tell if it was actually true. She could have been trying to comfort me, or just saying something to calm me down. Or maybe she really meant everything will be alright. That was a lie. I knew it the second she pulled away. The moment the air left her lungs, my ears perked up, catching every single sound around me. Even her breathing became amplified, and I knew she hadn't expected such sharp hearing abilities to suddenly pop up after being absent for so long. That didn't make me any less afraid though. What if one of them had followed us? They're bound to find us soon. This must have happened because we were in the forest. We had no place else to go, right? So it was only l

CHAPTER 73

CHARLENE'S POVI began to explain, only for her to shake her head frantically at me. "I don't care how good of a hunter you are. You still have no idea who we are or what we're doing out here. The wolf pack might just attack us right here right now." I sighed, frustrated, "I thought hunters didn't worry about other people's lives." "Well, I do," she shot back defensively. She took a deep breath and tried again, calmer this time, "Look, I'm sorry. If I overstep my boundaries, it'll happen again. But please, at least wait a day before we go to find you a new mate. It's too risky to try and get them alone. Especially one who looks like you. They'll be more aggressive when they think they won't get prey." I nodded, feeling guiltier than I should've, but not able to argue with her anymore. "Fine. I guess I'll give you that. But we are going soon, correct?" I asked. She nodded her head once and smiled at me reassuringly. "We should go back to camp. They should be done cleaning everythin

CHAPTER 74

CHARLENE'S POVInstantly alert, I froze where I stood. What was that noise? I looked around warily, wondering which direction it had come from. It sounded awfully familiar, but I couldn't quite pinpoint where it could be coming from. There were many bushes covering the area and it took an immense amount of concentration just to pick out each leaf and branch. So how could I know when I had heard that particular cry? The only answer I could think of was that I had imagined it. Still, there was something strange about that little noise. Something that wasn't right with my ears. I decided to investigate. I slowly approached the source of the noise. I crouched, trying to see through the dense brush. Nothing but leaves. I growled impatiently. Why wouldn't someone just come out and talk to me already? Why was it taking so long? I grumbled angrily in my throat, hoping it would be louder enough for the person to hear. I needed answers. Finally, something moved. A shadow detached itself from

CHAPTER 75

CHARLENE'S POVI felt insulted that she'd call me a trespasser. And a trespasser I might be, but I wasn't some sort of criminal! I wanted to tell her this, but before I had even opened my mouth again, the other girl had grabbed hold of my hand, pulling me away. Before I could protest, I was being pushed forward, along the hallway, until we reached a large room that contained several cages lined up against the walls. They were filled with wolves, some bigger than others and all sleeping peacefully. My breath hitched. How did they all fit into these cages? What were their owners keeping them for? I looked around for some sort of sign, a note, or something. But there was none. Everything was just plain. And dark, too. Darker than anywhere I've ever seen. Even the cages that held the wolves seemed almost featureless. It reminded me of nothing so much as a giant box of cement blocks. But I knew better than to look at them for more than two seconds. I couldn't risk breaking the concentrat

CHAPTER 76

CHARLENE'S POVMy cheeks reddened slightly. "Are… are you okay?" I hadn't been sure if the girl meant to hurt anyone or not. After all, we were supposed to be asleep. Maybe she'd been too angry to realize what she was doing. But now that she seemed calm, I didn't want to scare him off again. Plus, I liked talking to him. If anything, I figured he could use someone to talk to. He let out a soft chuckle, "Sure am, kid. And thanks. Sorry for waking you up." "It's no big deal," I assured him quickly. It wasn't any fun being scared in the middle of the night, especially when you're tired, but hey, you never knew if the person in front of you might be dangerous or not. "Did you happen to hear the noise, or see anything suspicious happening? It sounded like glass breaking." It was a good thing I stayed home tonight. Being in my house alone would've given me quite a fright. Pete shook his head. "No, I thought I heard it, but nothing really happened," he replied. "I did notice a guy st

CHAPTER 77

CHARLENE'S POVBut there were some things she didn't know about our new neighbors. And I wanted to keep her ignorant. The thought of a stranger coming around asking too many questions about us made me feel ill at ease. As the conversation died down, my stomach growled loudly. That made me even more uncomfortable. It had been weeks since I last ate something. I needed to find food. And fast. So I reluctantly got out of bed and made my way downstairs. My parents must have noticed how upset I looked because they came outside. The next hour consisted of me telling my mom and dad everything that had happened in my dream; including the strange noises I heard last night. "We should go visit our neighbors today," Mom suggested. "It's been so long since anyone's shown up, maybe they'll be friendly." "They wouldn't want us to intrude on their privacy. Besides, if they are vampires, they could eat us or something," my father said with a laugh. He pulled his hair back, and then tied it up in

CHAPTER 78

CHARLENE'S POVThe door opened. A boy with spiky black hair walked in. He wore jeans with rips in them. He looked like he'd just escaped from some sort of punk rock band. As soon as he saw my face, he froze. A look of horror flashed across his face. He quickly closed the door behind him. I tried to move and cried out in pain as the movement jolted my head. "Whoa there. Easy to do." His voice seemed much louder than he should've been capable of. He moved forward slowly. When he reached my bedside, he sat on the edge. "Are you alright?" He sounded so scared. The look on his face said, 'you don't have any reason to be afraid of me.' I thought he was an angel. But angels aren't supposed to sound scared, are they? And he wasn't acting like one. In fact, the only thing resembling fear I could sense in him were the taut muscles in his arms as he kept moving forward toward me. He was too tense. Too anxious. So tense, he might snap any moment. That's when I finally understood that he wasn

CHAPTER 79

CHARLENE'S POVWhen Alpha Jaxton and I reunited again, our wolves were in so much pleasure. We were excited to see each other again after years of separation. I was happy that they would have the opportunity to meet again, but also terrified because it had been a long time since we'd last seen each other when he betrayed me and my only pup. I hadn't even realized how badly my wolf had changed until he started his transformation. I had missed him. So many things changed that it felt surreal. I could barely keep up with the changes he had gone through. My body still remembers him like it did when he betrayed me. My mind can only handle being in touch with him, even if for just a couple of minutes. There are days I just don't want to talk at all. It seems strange that we'd both have to change. It's hard enough to be separate, let alone together. Alpha wasn't interested in meeting anyone new and seemed more concerned with figuring out where to sleep than any of that. His curiosity abou

CHAPTER 80

CHARLENE'S POVHe thinks we're incompatible. I had thought he wanted me! But the way he said it, it sounded as though he didn't want anything more than friendship and maybe s*x. I felt disappointed, hurt even, and humiliated. "It just occurred to me that your bloodline isn't completely pure," he explained, "or at least, not entirely. There's a chance, if we're compatible enough..." I couldn't help feeling hopeful. "Yes. If we are compatible, then when our souls touch." He trailed off. His eyes were sparkling. I could feel how badly he wanted me. How much he really liked me. I could see how much he was enjoying our time together. So much so that he would willingly change himself for better. I felt tears welling up inside me. I hadn't expected anything more than being friends. Not that I wouldn't be grateful and happy, of course. But still, this was so unexpected for both of us. I nodded in response to his question, not trusting my voice. "That's perfect, Charlene," he grinned. "We
