CHAPTER ONE: THE DREAM THAT BECAME A NIGHTMARE

Alisa's stomach growled and her hands gripped her stomach, her mouth turned up at the corners. She had been at college all day, and was now walking home alone so she would get ready for her evening shift at the grocery store she worked. It was already evening, and the setting sun was pouring its orange glow on everything, the autumn leaves falling from maple trees on either side of the lonely path Alisa trod on. The path cut through the woods and was the only place that lacked green in Palm Springs City, carrying more brown in it than anywhere else. Her mind was on a secret apple tree she had found years back, and she wondered if she would find apples to eat there, and maybe even pick some for her younger brother, John and her friend, Stacy, the two most important people in her life since her parents death in a tragic accident some years before. She cut from the path and went deeper into the woods, a compass in her head guiding her towards the apple tree, the woods getting thicker and

CHAPTER TWO: LIVING THE NIGHTMARE

Alisa jumped off her bed to see John face down on the floor, a pool of blood quickly forming around his head. Her hands covered her mouth in horror as she tried to scream, but no sound came out. Her head spun and her vision went blank for a while before she moved to take action. She rushed to him and painstakingly turned him around, putting his head on her lap and trying to wake him up or even check if he was still alive. People slumped and died, didn’t they? She was scared and her hands shook as she unbuttoned his shirt and felt for his heartbeat, but her hands shook so much that she couldn’t steady herself enough to feel it. She put her finger under his nose to feel for his breath, but she felt nothing, and then she managed to scream. She put him down on the floor again and searched for her phone to call the only person in the world she knew to meet for help, her friend Stacy who thankfully, was a nurse. Alisa screamed some more as the phone rang and tears ran down her cheeks, eve

CHAPTER THREE: WOLF

The bright sun shone that Friday morning as the private jet’s wheels touched down slowly on the runway and then came to a stop. Almost immediately, a black Lamborghini Sian Roadster pulled up next to it and waited. The door of the jet opened, and a young man came out of it, an impassive look on his face and his eyes shielded from the glare of the hot sun by a pair of sunglasses. His jet black hair shone in the sunlight, shiny strands of it falling across his face and confidence radiating from every part of him. He had a plain white dress shirt on with the sleeves rolled up lazily, exposing his gold Rolex watch. The first three buttons were undone, leaving his ripped chest exposed to beat the heat. His shirt was tucked in his black pants, which hung from his trim waist and matched the Italian shoes that covered his feet. The long fingers of his right hand held up a phone to his ear, while his left hand stayed hidden away in his pocket. A man in his fifties whom the young man easily

CHAPTER FOUR: I WANT HER

Doctor King’s next entry to Jayden’s office was not empty this time. He followed behind Anita, carrying a file with him, and Jayden ordered that they should not be disturbed as Anita walked out.His grey eyes regarded Doctor King as the latter pushed the file across and observed that Jayden had changed the swivel chair to a bigger and more comfortable leather brown seat. He smiled at the lad, admiring his taste. Jayden, however, was not looking at Doctor King, but through the file. There were a bunch of forms, each of them carrying information about the women who had applied for the surrogacy with profiles of them stapled to the top left corner. A smile lit Jayden’s face, one of his broadest smiles in years. “You have seen a woman you like?” Doctor King asked, noticing the smile. “No,” Jayden answered, his smile vanishing like magic. “I only like how well I can predict humans. Look at all of them, ready to carry a baby they will never see again for money. A she-wolf would never do t

CHAPTER FIVE: MEETING JAYDEN WELLS

When Stacy had suggested the idea of being a surrogate, or a baby’s mother to Alisa, she had expected Alisa to reject it.And that had almost happened. But Alisa seemed to think it was her only hope. Carry a baby and make a family, or an individual happy while making enough money to save her brother through it— At least thinking of it that way made it feel honourable and good enough for Alisa to want to do.They got a form from Doctor Felix King, and Alisa applied. Part of her was pessimistic about it because for all she knew there were several other women with more desirable qualities going for the same thing. It was a legal thing in Palm Springs City, and it got women rich overnight, but elder members of the society frowned upon it and respectable people refused to partake in it, deeming it a thing for harlots.Alisa did it anyway. Her brother’s life was her stake. She had tried her best to remain calm during the period she spent waiting for a reply, in case she was chosen, and when

CHAPTER SIX: AT THE FOUNTAIN

She felt sad to leave the woman and scared to be alone. Her joke had brought a kind of rapport between them, but she had to get this over and done with. She went inside and saw a room that looked so endless it was the size of her entire house. A polished wooden table sat in the middle, large cream-coloured sofas were around them, each with smaller tables beside them, and in one of those sofas sat a man. He was so damn gorgeous. He had a white dress shirt on, the first three buttons were undone, and a gold chain peeked out right above his chest. His sleeves were rolled up, a gold watch hanging on his hands, and part of his hair fell across his face. His eyes, grey, dark and cold, were fixed on hers. He didn’t even look like a businessman, not to talk of owning one of the biggest construction companies around. “Miss Alisa Grant?” he smiled, so thinly she could barely even call it a smile. “I have been waiting for you. Make yourself comfortable. I am Jayden Wells.” Jayden motioned he

CHAPTER SEVEN: ELLIOTT

Elliott Hansen. The same Elliott that had spoken to her at the parking lot in the afternoon. The one that was in love with her. He had pulled her to him and held her tightly to himself, and it made her feel very uncomfortable. “What the hell—” Alisa started. “I want to say the same too, but you should be thanking me for saving your life, Alisa.” “Saved me?” “You were about to drown.” “The girl is a fine swimmer, Elliott. You just wasted your time.” The duo turned in surprise and saw Jayden watching them, one of his slight smiles adorning his face, his arms folded across his chest, and the woman who had brought Alisa to the pool standing behind him. Alisa suddenly remembered that Elliott had her in his arms, which could seem compromising to anyone watching, and she pushed herself from him. Elliott let her go, but more because his attention was on Jayden. “She looked like she was going to drown.” He defended himself. “Well she isn’t drowning now, is she?” Jayden asked, lookin

CHAPTER EIGHT: TERMS

He could see a flash of white fur in the woods. Running through the grass in the light of the full moon. He knew it was his mate, and so he followed as fast as he could. His paws hit the ground aggressively as he followed, his heart beating hard in his chest. At first, he could find her no more, but then he saw her standing on top of the rocks where the wolves' meetings were held while he stood on the ground opposite the spring-fed pond. His Luna. Her fur was pure white, as white as snow, and her grey eyes glowed like polished rock. The wind blew through her fur as she stared at him and wagged her tail, and he wagged his too. She howled, the sound echoing and sounding like music to his ears. He howled in harmony with her, and then she looked at him again. But this time, her tail was wrapped in between her legs. He howled, calling out to her, but she turned and jumped headlong into the spring-fed pond. Jayden clambered up the stones and looked down, howling for his mate, but he f

CHAPTER NINE: DECISIONS

“Hello?” “Oh, God. Alisa. Where the hell were you? I’ve been trying to call you since.” “I’m sorry, Stacy. I kind of—” Alisa stopped. “What?” “I’m on the verge of signing the contract.” “Oh my God, Alisa. You didn’t even tell me that you had gotten it.” “I’m sorry, but it all happened so fast. I was called and offered a ride from the college’s park and then—” Alisa stopped, thinking of what to say. “Then what?” Stacy asked. Alisa could detect excitement in her voice. “A lot happened, but I’m almost through. We have agreed on terms.” “How much will you get paid?” Stacy asked. It was as though she was getting more excited with each passing second. “I asked him for $500,000.” “You are joking, right?” Stacy asked, her excitement level going down by half. “There will be nothing left if we do John’s damn transplant.” “I will come to see you and we will talk about it, okay?” Alisa promised. “Get your ass to the hospital first. Johnny’s condition went a bit high yesterday, but he’

CHAPTER TEN: DESPERATION

“How will the artificial insemination happen if I am a virgin?” “Are you a virgin?” The doctor asked. There was a kind of caution in his voice that scared her. But whether she lied or not, he was bound to find out anyway. She decided to come clean. “Yes, I am one, Doctor King.” “Then all of this is a really bad idea for you, Miss Grant. First, we are not sure if you can carry a baby successfully if you have never had one. And as a virgin, I will have to break through your hymen if I have to inseminate you.” Alisa went blank. Between her, and her brother’s kidney transplant and $500,000 stood her virginity. “So right now, if I choose natural insemination, I will have to have sex with Mr Wells, and if I choose artificial insemination, you will break through my hymen?” she asked. “Yes, Miss Grant. That’s right.” “I am sorry I can’t go through with this, Sir. I quit.” “You what?” The doctor asked, his tone a tad higher. “I said I quit.” “It is done, then. We will find somebody e
