Chapter 11

“Hmm? What was that?” Wilson asked, drawing closer to get a better hearing of what seemed like the first word said by Lucia. “I said, apologize” Lucia repeated, this time a little louder, her voice cracking at each interval. “Hm, still finding it hard to hear you clearly. Seems like you have a bad cough young lady. You should get that fixed” Wilson said, making fun of Lucia despite him hearing what she said. “She said apologize Sir” Jim butted in, helping Wilson out in his difficulty to hear well. Wilson, who was not expecting anyone to talk, gave Jim a deadly glare which could kill. Jim tried to avoid eye contact, but it was too late to look away. He understood that he was in trouble for what he said and swallowed hard. “As I was saying before this impudent fool distracted me, I didn't get what you said. Now that he's helped my hearing disability, I would like to ask you a question. Do I in any way look like the person who killed your father?” Wilson puked from his vocals, not m

Chapter 12

As Lucia walked back into the hospital, she felt a sense of relief overwhelming her. Apart from coming to the city, rejecting Wilson's money in the most harsh way seemed to have been one of the best and toughest decisions she had made in a while. “That will teach him to respect me whenever we see each other. How can he try to buy my voice with money?” Lucia thought to herself. She only wanted an apology from him which would make her feel better, but after what just transpired, she made up her mind that it wouldn't end like this. She wasn't bluffing about seeing him in court, and that meant she had to get to work. Even if it meant being in debt, she was willing to take up the case to satisfy her conscience. The doctor in charge of the hospital called for her shortly after to discuss the bills and how long her dad would be staying in the mortuary. Lucia was able to pay for her dad's mortuary fee for three days with the money given to her by her new bosses.“So what now? Where do you

Chapter 13

“How dare she?” An outraged Wilson barked as he left for home, feeling like a wounded peacock. The ride back home wasn't funny for Jim as he took a reasonable amount of insults from Wilson. Jim was blamed for keeping quiet even after a woman physically assaulted him. “I have no idea what you do for me. I pay you a hefty sum of money for my protection, but you allowed a random stranger who I could swear was frustrated to touch me. I'm really angry at you, and before I can forgive you, you must do something for me. Get as much information as you can get about that, that lady…Argh…what impudence” Wilson groaned out after his instructions. “But boss, I don't know where she stays, or where we'll next come in contact with her. Can't we just…wait till she files her case? I mean, she isn't of much importance as long as we can settle her. She doesn't look that rich to me” Jim opted, carefully picking his words to avoid further provocation. He had a look at his boss through the front view m

Chapter 14

“Mom?”Lucia's voice called out when she noticed little movements from her mom. Jada has been unconscious for some couple of hours, and Lucia stood in patrol till she saw that her mom had been revived. “Are you up? Can you see me?” Lucia asked as she dropped her squeezed wet towel into the bowl of water she had used to massage her mom's head. Lucia looked at her mom who seemed lost in emotions. Her eye bags seemed to have deepened over minutes, making her look like someone who hadn't slept for weeks. She wanted to console her mom, but stopped right on her tracks. “Common mom, you need to get up and eat something. I prepared your favorite meal” Lucia voiced from her vocals, faking a happy voice. Her mom had always loved to have rice with chicken and salad, but they were too poor to afford such meals. The money given to Lucia by her new bosses went a long way in her affording to get ingredients. Lucia was left alone to do a double task as she cooked and looked after her mom simultan

Chapter 15

“Ugh…who would be calling me by this time of the night?” Mr Thomas grumbled out of tiredness as he extended his hands, trying to get hold of his phone which was at the top of his room table. When he eventually got a hold of his mobile phone, he turned off the ringing tone which was now getting on his nerves. Mrs Benita who had been asleep by his side woke up from the ringing tone and asked did the same thing as Mr Thomas. “Does that person need to be told that this is past bedtime?” Mrs Thomas nagged. After a while, the call came in again, and this time they got really angry. Mr Thomas fully opened his eyes and took his phone to check the individual who had now become a disturbance. At the sight of Lucia's name, his anger mellowed into a sense of guilt. “It's Lucia,” he announced. His wife who was already half asleep got up with her eyes fully opened. “The poor child? Hurry, pick up the call. I wonder what it could be this time around” Mrs Benita whimpered with worry written all

Chapter 16

The next morning, a very tired Lucia was woken up by the voice of someone crying at the top of her voice. She removed the coat which helped her in the cold night and looked outside the door window. She however couldn't see anything and decided to look outside. When she opened the hospital door, she halted just on time before stepping on the droplets of fresh blood which trailed all the way to the end of the hospital hallway. Lucia found it disturbing as it reminded her of the bloody picture of her late dad. Her thinking about it sent shivers up her spine, and gave her a headache. After a while, she violently shrugged it off and went to her mom's bed. Lucia looked at her mom who lay on the bed, looking so peaceful and without worry. She wished that was reality, but it wasn't. Instead, it was her mom unconscious after fainting twice. “Hope you are enjoying your slumber mom? You've been asleep for a long while. The doctor earlier said you would be awake anytime from now. I wish you co

Chapter 17

Wilson couldn't sleep a wink and tumbled from one side of the bed to another, thinking of Lucia and how to make her pay. When it seemed as if he would go mad, he reached out to his ever faithful and reliable friend, Nathan. “Yo, what's up my nigga” Nathan voice echoed in the most calmest and coolest way ever. “Your nigga is in a mess bro. I can't get any sleep” Wilson confessed. He was always vulnerable whenever he was with Nathan as they both had a lot of sad and joyous history together. On many occasions, Wilson told secrets of himself which he would never tell anyone to Nathan. “Why can't you sleep? Is anyone hunting you in your dreams?” Nathan asked jokingly, letting out a loud laugh. “That's not funny dude, and why is there music in the background? Please get to somewhere less noisy so that we can talk” Wilson said, emptying his cavity. There was no other word from Nathan who disconnected the call. Wilson however wasn't worried or angry as he understood what Nathan wanted to

Chapter 18

“And to what do I owe this distinguished call Mr Wilson. I thought I made it clear to you that I would see you in court” Lucia voiced out, not hiding the fact that she wasn't interested in any conversation of any sort with Wilson. “I just wanted to umm… I wanted to…” Wilson, who placed the call on Lucia without thinking about any suitable topic, was out of words to say. He didn't plan this through, and he felt ashamed of himself. “Looks like the cat's got your tongue. Why are you finding it difficult to say some sentences, or do you want to rain more insults on me?” Lucia asked via the phone. “I wanted us to talk about the court case,” Wilson said, finally coming up with something. In the real context, Wilson only called Lucia so that he could gain some level of respect back from Lucia, especially after she threw his bundle of money at his face. One of the ways to do that was by reminding her of who had the upper hand. “So? What about it?” Lucia asked with no sense of fear or worr

Chapter 19

Lucia ended the call, feeling like a champion who had just won her second belt in the world of wrestling. “That'll teach him not to dare me” Lucia ended as she went inside, mumbling curses to Wilson. She didn't bother about getting any food again due to her loss of appetite she had just gotten. When she got to her mom's room, she met her mom awake and being attended to by some medical staff. Her joy knew no bounds as she ran to her mom, giving her a big hug. “You're okay now mom, I'm here” Lucia mumbled as tears of happiness escaped from her eyes. When she was done crying, she loosened her hug and looked at her mom's face only to see confusion written all over Jada's face. “You seem to have mistaken me for someone else, young lady. Who are you calling mom? Do I know you?” Mrs Jada asked in confusion.“What? Are you okay mom? Is my mom okay doctor?” Lucia asked, shifting her question to the only doctor in the room. “There seems to be a problem Miss Lucia. She seems to be sufferin

Chapter 20

“Really Sir?” Lucia's enthusiastic voice asked as she couldn't hide the tone of excitement in her voice. “Yes child, and I've told you already, it's Thomas” Mr Thomas replied as he tried to stifle a giggle. “Oh, sorry. I forgot. I'll send you the location of the hospital right away S…Mr Thomas” Lucia immediately corrected herself before ending the call. After she had successfully sent the hospital address and room number, she went further to settle the hospital bills and see her late dad. She was led inside the cold room where she was led to the long drawer like object in which her late dad was kept with a tag on his leg. Never in her life did she imagine it would get to this within some couple of days, but then again, life had its way of doing things. She gently shifted the white material which was used to cover her dad from head to toe and uncovered his face which was by now looking pale. “Good morning dad. I just came to see how you were doing. What was that? How am I faring?”
