Chapter 1: Something Dangerous This Way Comes

"Yes, yes." My breath dropped as my phone nearly fell from between my shoulder blade and ear. "Sorry! Yes, no I can definitely be there tonight." I paused as I listened to the manager on the other end. "You want me there in an hour?" My eyes moved to the wrist of my full hand. "Yes, I can make it.""Great," the coordination staff member said into my ear as I hurried through the threshold of my apartment. "We'll see you for the party at six in an hour then. Please don't be late."I sighed loudly once the cellphone shut off and dumped all my books and bag onto the couch. Today had been another restless one of classes. It seemed it was going to be the same for the night as well. Rubbing my eyes, I hurriedly made my way to the bathroom to freshen up.It wasn't like I had a choice whether to accept the offer or not. My current economic status was less than satisfactory, which was just a nice and fancy way of saying I was flat broke. I laughed at myself in the mirror as I dried my h

Chapter 2: An Irrefutable Offer

Touch was the first one of my senses that came back to me as I woke up. The fabulous, smooth silk material was beneath my fingers before my eyes even registered where I was. I felt the material beneath my cheek and groaned at the feeling. The second thing I realized when I opened my eyes, was that I was in a room, presumably one of the rooms from the hotel from the familiar interior. I had spent many hours in these sorts of rooms cleaning up after guests to not recognize it when I saw it.However, the main object of the room, and the only thing that was not familiar to me, was the handsome man sitting in a black leather chair next to my bed. His legs were spread apart, and his forearms rested against his thighs. His head was slightly bent up as he looked at me from his hunched position. Every caliber of my being screamed at me to flee. He was looking at me like I might do just that too. Green eyes stared down at me with a predatory gaze, and dark black hair fell on his forehead a

Chapter 3: What Is This Feeling?

After I accepted Sol's offer and followed him to his house, the first thing I realized was he introduced his full name as Sol Montgomery. That name was not who I thought he was.He was so much more.My initial guess was that he was just another wealthy pureblood. That thought was shot to high heavens as we pulled up into the mansion's driveway—maybe more of a small castle's driveway. Either or, it was like something out of an epic fantasy novel. I knew purebloods loved to live lavishly but wasn't something like this just a tad excessive for a single bachelor to live alone in? Sol must have noted my awe-struck expression as I stared up at the mansion-castle because I heard him laugh from beside me."The house has been in my family for… Well, as long as I can remember. I grew up in this house, and so did my father." That shocked me. The question of how old Sol was rushed through my mind, but I knew better than to ask a vampire how old they were. Least of all, one you barely knew

Chapter 4: Serin and Sarah

I woke up not three hours later due to noises coming from outside of my bedroom. It sounded like chattering and then shuffling. Just as I sat up, they disappeared. A part of me wondered if it was Sol making noises in the kitchen. I was surprised to see a human woman. She was ransacking the cupboards with a piece of bread in her mouth, and we both froze as we saw each other."Um, hello?" the brown-haired woman greeted me as her equally hazel eyes gave a cautious look. The woman was beautiful, no doubt, and made me fidget slightly in her gaze. Sol had mentioned his family could visit, but this woman in front of me was definitely human. "Hello…" I replied cautiously. "Who… Who are you?" Was she a woman Sol had brought here for the night? Thinking of it, I suddenly felt irritable and restless."Hahaha, I could ask you the same question." The woman laughed as she walked toward the counter in the middle of the kitchen and sat on top with food in her hands. "It isn't like Sol to hav

Chapter 5: Human Stuff

When I was on my way back to the manor, my head was turning because of the high temperature. I felt the food in my hands was heavier than it should have been due to the exhaustion. I had noticed the severe lack of human food in the house last night, so I got some after my classes. As a half-breed, I could survive by having human food, which was one of the things I was delighted about. I couldn't imagine how I would have lived if I couldn't taste human food ever again. It was afternoon when I finally made it into the mansion and the kitchen, passing the regular electronic security checks. I figured Sol was still asleep for the day and didn't bother letting him know I had come back before getting ready to prepare my dinner.I peeled the potatoes. My mind ran with thoughts of the previous night—the couple I had met, and their peculiar situation. I was not sure what the situation of my parents was, but I had never met a pair like them in my life. Sol was indifferent to their blood s

Chapter 6: Grocery Shopping

Grocery shopping with a pure-blooded vampire was a strange and kind of interesting experience. My hands were settled on my hips as I stared at Sol, who was currently scanning each ingredient printed on the packaging of the products. He touched everything I placed into the grocery cart, from vegetables to canned goods, as though it were the first time he had been to the store. "Not that one," he told me as he took a sweet melon from my hands and replaced it with a smaller one. "It doesn't smell fresh. It might as well be categorized as the undead."Although I couldn't begrudge him when selecting the fruits, he had helped me pick out the freshest ones due to his enhanced sense of smell."Fine." I furrowed my eyebrows at him but took his preferred choice anyway. I had protested as we walked on, but he only winked at me and tapped his nose. I rolled my eyes because I didn't understand the meaning of his action but let it go.I admitted pure-blooded vampires' sense of smell was

Chapter 7: Francis Barker

"I'll put this in the car and bring it around," Sol told me as he lifted the heavy bags of groceries in his hands easily. "Wait here. I'll be back quickly."I nodded my head and waved him off before going to stand near the wall. We had managed to hang out in civilized society without much of a scene, besides the meeting with Kaya. I heaved a sigh of relief.I took a deep breath of the cool night air. A rusty smell hit my nose. It was small and barely noticeable. At that moment, I realized that the strange smell in the air was from blood rather than oxygen. My head turned around immediately as I tried to find the source of the smell. Just as I did it, my eyes came into contact with the hard gaze of a human male. His skin was dark, and his eyes even darker as he stared at me. Before I could act, the man came toward me and pulled me into the side of the building. He hid us from everyone else. I felt the cold metal of an object on my skin. When I looked down, I realized he was pre

Chapter 8: The Vampire Hunter Organization

Mia's POVSol and I sat in comfortable silence for a while. Sol tapped away at his laptop, and I had busied myself with preparing my dinner. The silence wasn't broken until I stopped sorting out the minced meat and turned around to face Sol."Do you think there will be more hunters?" I asked him cautiously. I noticed Sol staring at his screen for a moment before looking at me. The look in my eyes must have given him some hints to how I felt because the next thing he did was power down his screen and put down the device."Are you worried?" he asked, and I nodded my head. "It just seemed like..." I shook my head since I tried to wrap my thoughts around the situation. "He just came out of nowhere, you know?"When I turned my head to meet Sol's gaze, I realized he didn't have the same thought as I did."Honestly, I knew his presence before he showed up." I was shocked by his words. He sighed and stood up. "I didn't know that man in particular, but I was aware the local orga

Chapter 9: Secrets

Mia's POVI could hear my own screaming even through my dreams. Inside of my dreams, I was being plunged into freezing water. Outside of them, I felt my body being shaken awake in the real world. When I was released from the grip sleep had on me, I saw green eyes staring down at me. Worry and fear were dancing in them together. Fear? Did purebloods feel fear? What sort of thing did they feel fearful about? I thought they might be the most powerful creature at night. I felt Sol lift me by my arms. His cold hand on my chest made me realize that he wasn't breathing, and neither was II took in a deep, shuddering breath and ran my hand through my hair. It was then that I realized a slight sweat had broken out on my forehead. I moved to wipe it away.Sol was still looking at me as if to assess something. "I thought you were being attacked," he said softly. He gently helped push away the hair on my face.I breathed out a humorless laugh. "In some way, I was being attacked."

Chapter 10: Oh, Brother

Mia's POV"You should leave," I whispered to Sol as I eyed the clock on my nightstand. The two of us were still laying entangled in my bed. It had been about an hour after he had come. "Five more minutes," Sol grumbled as he tightened his grip around my waist. "I remembered you have some business things to deal with. When?" I asked him when he didn't respond to me. He only grunted in response. When I pinched his side, he rolled over slightly and answered."I can move my plan to later or even tomorrow," he told me immediately. I felt his arms tighten around me. I huffed a laugh at his antics. I felt the way he brought his nose to my neck and listened to the pulse beating there. "You have to go," I told him as I pushed his head away. "You can't ignore your responsibilities." "I think it would be irresponsible of me to leave you alone, you know, in your stricken state," Sol said softly. I only rolled my eyes at him."My stricken state?" I mocked his answer by repeating i
