Chapter 41: A Date

Mia's POV"By the way," Sol said as we walked into the mansion and up the stairs to our rooms, "there will be a business party the following night that I'll have to attend."Sol told me as we stopped in front of my bedroom door. I wasn't sure why, but a sudden sadness came over me when I realized he would be gone for the entire night."A business party?" I inquired about it.Sol nodded. "That's what my father wanted to discuss with me. Well, part of it. He decided to hold the party for future investors. It will also attract new clients with the new strategy.""Pure-bloods?" I found myself asking curiously. Sol shook his head as he leaned against my doorframe. "Mostly, but there will be humans and half-bloods as well. The company reaches a large audience. As such, it has to cater toward a larger investment market.""Oh," I said genuinely, "that's interesting. I'd never heard of an organization that integrated all three subcategories of people before. Do they all… You know

Chapter 42: Flora Alverov

Mia's POVThe next night, I felt my stomach hurting again as I tried to contain my laughter. "Sol, what on earth are you wearing?"I watched as the pure-blooded vampire before me rose his hands at either side of him and turned around twice to show off his very human, very ugly outfit. "I wanted to look more human for you," he told me. "It's in fashion." "While I think the gesture is gorgeously sweet, it most certainly is not fashion." I shot him down immediately. Shaking my head, I walked toward him, took the baseball cap from his head, and let his hair hang loose over his forehead. The sight took me back for a moment. I had never seen Sol without his hair combed and slicked back before. The sight in front of me now made him look so much more attractive. I wasn't sure whether that detail was good for my heart or not. I cleared my throat and threw away the cap and scarf he wore around his neck.I took off the brown leather jacket he had put on over a blue hoodie and mad

Chapter 43: An Old Demon

Mia's POVSol sat with me in the living room of his mansion for a long time after we arrived home. I couldn't stop my body from shaking as the realization of who I had seen came crashing down onto me. I had to face reality again. I could not completely escape my past.He had tried to get me to shower, eat, or even drink some water, but I refused everything he offered. Instead, I just sat there with my knees to my chest and clutched his hand. Something was harrowing about seeing someone from a past you had walked away from.It was like seeing a ghost but this ghost was alive, and so were you, and there were no places to run or hide. "Mia," Sol's voice was gentle as he called out to me. I could feel his large hands run through my hair and massage my head. "You have to talk to me. You have to tell me what's wrong so I can help you."I knew he was right. Talking about it was the only thing that would help me in this situation. But at the same time, talking about it and admitting

Chapter 44: The Party

Mia's POV"Woah," I looked up at the grand scenery before me. The hotel where the party was being held was nothing short of magnificent, as most things were in the life of the vampire society. Some people would even say it was a bit extravagant after seeing the glass chandeliers, the golden—not silver, that would be bad—cutlery, deep oaken chairs and tables, and carved-out ice sculptors. But not me. Those things would become common items if you found yourself living to the ages of one hundred, two hundred, three hundred, hell, even six hundred in the cases of some of the purebloods in attendance tonight. The floor was draped in red carpet and pink rose petals, and there were fountains of wine and chocolate strewn about the place. The air smelled sweet and delicious. I felt myself begin to salivate at the thought of rich, creamy food."Feel okay?" Sol asked me with a laugh as he pulled me closer to him. The two of us walked through the large double doors together and were o

Chapter 45: Awkward Conversations

Mia's POVA strange feeling settled in my gut as Kyrin approached the two of us. I hadn't seen Sol's half-blooded half-brother since our chance meeting at the company building and thanked my lucky stars for that.In hindsight, I should have probably prepared myself to see his arrogant, smug face at a party his father was hosting. But those few days without having to deal with his chaotic aura and unhinged nature really softened me."What are you talking about, Kyrin?" I asked the man in front of me as my agitation quickly grew. It seemed like whenever this man was around or wherever he went, chaos always seemed to follow. My anger level rose to an exceeding amount. He shrugged and said, "All I'm saying is that what the old man is saying here seems pretty made up." I watched him with no small amount of growing anger as he popped a berry into his mouth. God, he even made eating look irksome. Suddenly, I had no appetite for the delicious food around me. I put the strawberry cak

Chapter 46: Dance With Me

Mia's POVI smiled at Sol as he walked up to us and rolled my eyes when I noticed Kyrin made himself comfortable at a seat by the bar in the corner, far away from his brother.Sol stared down at his younger brother for a moment before turning to me with a raised brow."What was that about?" Sol asked me once he reached where I stood. He took hold of my arms as he pulled me close to him. A smile played at my lips as I thought about what the old man said and welcomed the embrace.I shook my head. "Just Kyrin complaining about his love life, or lack thereof," I mumbled into his chest and heard a rumble in it as he laughed."Kyrin was complaining about his love life? To you and an old human male he had never met before?" I shrugged my shoulders in his arms and stared up at him."Maybe he had it bottling up deep, deep, deep inside of whatever container he has in his chest instead of a heart." I felt Sol's fingers snake their way to the bottom of my chin. He lifted my head to mee

Chapter 47: Reckless Actions

Mia's POVMy deep breathing was all I could hear for a moment as I looked into Sol's eyes. He was staring straight back at me with a large smile spread across his face. The people around us continued to dance as we stayed in place for a moment. Sol allowed me to catch my breath.I had never danced like that in my life. A small part of me wondered how or why I had never tried or had so much fun when I did dance on occasion. A bigger part of me knew that it was because I wasn't dancing with Sol.I could feel the blush forming on my face as I stared at him, not knowing whether it was from the heat of dancing or because the way he looked at me affected me that much. "I told you that you could dance," Sol whispered to me. I had to stifle the laugh that would have come out of my mouth loudly. I leaned against his chest for a moment and hummed. My feet were beginning to hurt in my shoes. I stepped from one foot to the other to try and relieve the pain before I answered him. "Te

Chapter 48: Don't Panic!

Sol's POVI saw it happen before Mia did. As the smell of the blood moved through the room, I saw almost every vampire react. Even if they didn't all turn to us, I saw them shift almost imperceptibly. They became just a little more alert. It was like Mia had become the true north to each of their compasses. I knew that it could only mean trouble. The few that didn't react at all had probably just eaten, and they had no need to take notice of any fresh blood right now. Even if they didn't react, it didn't mean they weren't aware of what was going on. It just wasn't important to them immediately. But that could change at any given moment. However, those who didn't immediately react to Mia's blood were few and far from. Most of the vampires turned. The humans didn't even seem to figure out what had happened just yet. They didn't have the senses to pick up on fresh blood that wasn't immediately near them. They didn't gain sustenance from it, and it didn't drive them int

Chapter 49: Bloodletting

Sol's POVNo matter how much pressure I applied to the wound, it just would not stop bleeding. The blood kept coming no matter what I did. I knew that I couldn't keep this up for long. If Mia fainted because of loss of blood, though that would take a long time to happen, then I was literally going to have to fight off vampires just to keep her alive.A bleeding prey was one thing for a vampire to ignore. A bleeding and incapacitated prey were just out of the question. It would be difficult to let half-bloods fight back, and that was more than enough temptation for a pureblood to attack. If Mia was unconscious, it would trigger their predator instinct even more than the blood had.I knew that the bleeding had to stop. I had to get it to stop if I wanted any chance of getting her out of there safely.I watched as Serin came over to us. I trusted my cousin absolutely, so I knew not to move. It was a challenge convincing my body to stay still. My instincts were still te

Chapter 50: A Thundering Terror Encases Her

Sol's POVAs soon as that problem was dealt with, and I wasn't stuck in survival mode, I was able to process what had just happened. My brother had wounded Mia, and my father had just stood by and allowed it to happen. He didn't even seem all that perturbed that she was hurt or even bleeding. He had just told me not to take her out of the room right now because we might be attacked, and his human guests would be in danger. There had been no sign of remorse. And where even was Kyrin? He had just hurt Mia and then taken off. He hadn't even checked to see what had happened to her.I felt my anger rise as these thoughts pulled through my mind. Now that Mia was no longer in danger, I knew that I could give reign to my anger. The vervain had essentially poisoned her blood, making it undrinkable to any vampire. It wouldn't hurt her because her human blood protected her. But no vampire would be able to digest that, not to mention how revolting it would smell to all of them now.
