Chapter Thirty

I heard the front door open and close and I smiled as I thought to myself that Link didn’t waste time tonight. I looked up as Megan walked past my office with her head down and I looked at my watch again. It was three am.“Megan?” I called out to her.“I’m fine,” she said and I heard her on the stairs.I sat there for a few minutes frowning before I stood up and followed her upstairs. Something was off, why would she say she was fine. I hurried up the stairs and stopped in front of her bedroom and knocked on the door. I could hear the shower and I could hear her crying.I pushed the door open and saw that she had left the bathroom door open. I sensed too many emotions to make sense of them. I walked into the bathroom not worrying that she might be naked my only worry was why she was crying. I opened the door and found her sitting in the corner hugging herself and she lowered her head quickly when she saw me.“What the fuck,” I whispered as I looked at her.She started crying again as

Chapter Thirty-One

On Monday morning I followed Megan to work to make sure that Alex Redford had indeed left the territory and that the principal at the school was aware of his banishment. Megan didn’t acknowledge my presence and I felt uncomfortable as her colleagues leered at me. Most of them were human and I pretended not to notice them.Back at home in the office Linda went through everything with me that needed to be done and we talked about Brenda and Cameron for a while. I was pleasantly pleased to learn that Linda had gotten Brenda to agree to really try to give Cameron a chance and not to reject him outright.“Your father phoned twice while you were out saying that your cell is off, he wants you to call him back,” Linda said.“Shit yeah it died, did he say what he wanted?” I asked her.“As if I’m going to ask that man what he wants with you,” she said and laughed.“Fair enough,” I said as I picked the landline up and dialed his number.“This is Lucas,” he answered as Linda left the office.“I’m

Chapter Thirty-Two

Dinner with the family was actually very nice. We laughed a lot and between me and Chase we were glaring at each other the whole night. We’ve always been that way with each other, but there was also nothing we wouldn’t do for the other one. We had a twisted sort of relationship and my mother kept telling Megan that she could do better than me. She was more pissed off than Lucas had let on but Megan just laughed and held her own between them all very well.We arrived home and Megan went upstairs as she yelled goodnight to me and I went to the kitchen. I probably would have to grovel too, since I told her I would do whatever it took to convince her. Ten minutes later I knocked on her door.“Come in,” she said loudly and I opened the door.“I brought you tea,” I said and froze for a second as she walked out of the bathroom.“Thank you,” she said with a smile and took the cup from me.“What the hell are you wearing?” I asked her staring at her open mouthed.“Pajamas,” she said as she sat

Chapter Thirty-Three

I had arrived back in Princeton just after midnight but I was too worked up to sleep. I was in the gym working my frustrations out on the boxing bag with my bare fists. I had only pulled my shirt off as I started laying into that bag. I hadn’t even noticed the tears that were running freely down my face as Felix’s image kept intruding on my thoughts.“Fucking bastards,” I said in anger as I kept punching that bag.“Who?” Megan asked behind me. I stopped punching the bag but I didn’t turn around to look at her.“People,” I said softly. She walked right up to me and hugged me from behind, pressing herself against my sweaty back as her arms encircled me. I rested my head against the boxing bag as I tried to clear my mind from all the overwhelming emotions.“Talk to me,” she said as her arms loosened their grip and she came to stand in front of me.“Why aren’t you asleep?” I asked her instead.“Why don’t you go take a shower and I’ll bring you some coffee and then you can tell me all abou

Chapter Thirty-Four

Megan had given me a death stare before leaving for work while I just laughed and Link shook his head as he looked at me. We had a busy day ahead of us and we left not long after Megan did.“What’s going on with you two?” he asked me.“I believe Megan was supposed to be my bonded half, Abeloth agrees so I told her that,” I said to him.“And?” he asked.“And now she’s got me jumping through hoops proving that I can be faithful and shit,” I said as he laughed.“So what’s with the death glare this morning?” he asked me.“I’m just giving her a taste of her own medicine, she’s teasing the shit out of me so I returned the favour this morning,” I said.“The sexual tension between you two is going to lead to you guys banging on the stairs or someplace,” he said as I laughed.“Hopefully sooner rather than later, she’s winning this little game of hers wearing pajamas that covers basically nothing and acting like it’s all normal while I stutter and drool,” I said to him as he laughed again.“You

Chapter Thirty-Five

“Hello,” I answered my phone groggily, still half asleep.“Ryder, I need your help,” he said and I sat up straight in bed.“What’s wrong Wentworth?” I asked him.“How soon can you be in Chicago?” he asked me and I looked at my watch.“I can be there by eight thirty,” I said to him.“I’ll be waiting,” he said and ended the call.It was just past six am and I got up and headed into the bathroom for a quick shower. I got dressed casually but I strapped my weapons on with the hidden knives beneath a long sleeved shirt and I took my gun as well. The house was quiet as I left through the front door twenty minutes later and stepped on the gas as soon as I reached the highway heading towards Chicago and that warehouse that had me both thrilled and gave me nightmares.I bought coffee at a drive through before heading to the warehouse and I had already talked to Link. He had called me the moment he realized that I wasn’t at the house. Megan had taken the day off and I assumed that she was still

Chapter Thirty-Six

The bottle of scotch was half as I stood up and put the drill down on the work bench to my left. Blood was seeping from Joe’s body and I looked at my blood stained hands. Nico had left the room when I started on the second kneecap and Basil had left when I started on his ankles.“What did he say?” Basil asked as he walked back into the room and kept his eyes averted from Joe’s body.“Carlson McIntyre Hall,” I said and he looked at me blankly.“I don’t know that name,” he said to me.“I was the target Basil, Felix was an accident,” I said as I sat down on the floor leaning my back against the wall.“I don’t care who the target was, my brother died and even if it was you that had died, Felix would be standing here instead of you,” Basil said angrily.“This is an old family feud, I know the name McIntyre but we thought the family line had ended,” I said to him as I poured water over my hands and washed the blood off.“So now we find this guy and kill him,” Basil said as he looked at Joe’

It was two am and I still couldn’t sleep. I had been rolling around for some time now, the images of Joe’s torture still haunting me. I’d never liked doing it but this time I had to. The betrayal I had felt when he said that name out loud filled me with so much anger that I wanted him to hurt, in that moment I hadn’t felt sorry for using the drill on him, but now, I could hear his screams again and smell his blood.I got up and walked slowly to Megan’s room. Link was still out and Elio was on the floor below us in the guest room. The house was quiet as I opened her bedroom door, the moonlight filtered through her open curtains and I could see her peacefully asleep on her side.I closed the door behind me and climbed in slowly behind her. I moved closer and put my arm around her as I closed my eyes and felt more at peace as I inhaled her scent. Her peaceful heartbeat was calming me.“You’re breaking the rules,” she whispered to me and I smiled with my eyes still closed.“I can’t sleep,

Chapter Thirty-Eight

My office wasn’t big enough for all of us to work simultaneously so we switched to the dining room and spread paperwork everywhere. We were all either on the phone, on a laptop or busy reading through old articles.Tank was a good tracker, hacker, whatever you wanted to call him. He found people for a living when he wasn’t active in our little team. Marlo could find an exact location if she had an idea of where to look. So far we hadn’t found much, not even a picture of this supposed Carlson Hall.Elios was talking to people from all over asking questions about the missing children, since I had also agreed to take that assignment on. We were working double time and when Megan came home from work she’d sit and help us sort through stuff. We’d been at it for three days when Lucas’s frame loomed in the doorway of the dining room and everyone just stared at him as he folded his arms across his chest and gave me a look that I knew all too well. It was his ‘what the fuck are you up to’ look

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Lucas had left that day with a grim expression on his face, he was never one to shy away from a fight but the threat of one of us dying was enough to keep him in his place, to make him promise me that he would stay put and watch Chase’s back. I wasn’t worried about me, I had my team with me and I had Abeloth. Chase wasn’t weak and he was a great fighter but I would never forgive myself if something happened to him because of me.We were sitting in the dining room and we had learnt some things about the missing children. We had established the points of kidnapping and some sightings that were reported. Tank had tried to follow all those leads and street traffic cameras closest to the kidnapping points. So far we were pretty sure that we had one base of operations. We didn’t want to move too soon but we also didn’t want to wait too long.“We should inform the Elders of your bond acceptance so they can do the ceremony,” Link said as we all took a well deserved break for the night.“The t
