Chapter Forty

Another week went by and Lucas called me every day to find out what progress we’d made. I knew that he was secretly having Timothy do everything that Tank was doing so I had Tank keep an eye on Timothy too.“Little Ryder!” Tank yelled from the dining room and I jumped from my seat behind my desk and literally ran to the dining room.“What did you find?” I asked him as his eyes glistened with happiness.“The house in Broadview has a lot of activity, I think I’ve found the person named Carlson Hall and then also the points of interest that Wentworth supplied have paid off, I’ve been tracking these four men and their vehicles and three more children have been abducted in the last twenty-four hours and we have them on a satellite view, we know where they are keeping the children!” he said excitedly.“Okay keep tabs on Carlson in Broadview, the children are our first priority,” I said and they all nodded.“We should make our preparations and plan to attack the stronghold just before dawn,”

Chapter Forty-One

I parked the car at the edge of the scrap yard and relished the quiet of the dark night. I had kissed Megan’s forehead before leaving and she hadn’t even stirred. I could feel the tension flow between all of us as Marlo linked our minds to be able to communicate telepathically with each other.“Move out,” I said after we had checked our weapons for the final time and started towards the highway. We moved single file through the fields surrounding the scrap yard and we crouched down next to the highway as a truck passed by us. We crossed the highway quickly and made it into the cover of the trees as a second truck passed by us.From the edge of the trees there were about four hundred feet of tree foliage that surrounded the building we had marked on the photos. We moved stealthily surrounding the house and moved forward slowly. There were a few lights burning and I had crept up behind a guard that was relieving himself against a tree.I slit his throat quietly and he sagged to the grou

Chapter Forty-Two

I parked the truck in the street and walked up to the front door and rang the doorbell. I could hear footsteps and then the door opened and Megan’s father, Kurt, stood there looking at me. He was part of my father’s lair, a professor at the university and her mother was a nurse.“Good evening Mr. Greer,” I said and extended my hand.“Evening,” he said without shaking my hand and turned around and left the front door open.“I guess he doesn’t like you for some reason,” Abeloth mused and I grinned.“You think?” I asked as he chuckled.I closed the door behind me and followed him through to the dining room where Megan’s mother, Mary, her sister, Sharice and her father now sat. I kissed the top of Megan’s head as Kurt’s eyes followed me.“Good evening Mrs. Greer, Sharice,” I said and sat down opposite Megan.“I’m so glad you could join us Ryder, please call me Mary,” she said with a genuine smile“Thank you for having me,” I said and returned her smile.Megan was looking intensely at her

Chapter Forty-Three

At six am I hit the road to Springfield and turned the music up loudly to block out Abeloth’s mutterings about killing Kurt Greer. I drove past the motel where Megan had checked in last night and her car was still in the parking lot. I wanted to pull into the parking lot and talk some sense into her but I had shit to do first.Marlo had given me an amulet like object that I had to leave in Albert’s office for her spell to take effect and Tank had given me a bug to place there as well so we could listen in on any conversations he had after I left.I didn’t take all my weapons just the knives on my arms and one gun in a shoulder holster. This wasn’t an attack, merely a fishing expedition to see how deep this thing ran. We wanted to make sure there was a connection before we hit the house in Broadview.“Hello,” I answered the phone as the radio went silent and the phone connected to the Bluetooth of the truck.“Hey,” Megan said.“How are you?” I asked her for lack of anything better to s

Chapter Forty-Four

I woke up to the murmuring of voices that I couldn’t quite make out and I let my eyes adjust to the dimness of the room I was being held in. I was chained to a wall and my limbs had pins and needles all over, a sign that the poison was working its way out of my body.“Abeloth?” I asked in my mind.“I’m here halfling, they got us bad this time,” he said sounding groggy.“Can you separate?” I asked him.“It feels like I’m trapped inside you, I’m being blocked somehow,” he said as he tried to push through.“At least we found his hideout,” I said and Abeloth chuckled.“Yeah at least we got this far,” he said and lay down again.I recognized the vampire that took me from the side of the road as he placed a chair a few feet in front of me. Even if I could kick out now I wouldn’t reach the chair, they were still being careful around me and that actually made me smile.“He’s awake Sir,” the vampire said as he lifted my head and met my eyes.“Bring him some water,” the other man said. The vamp

There were too many mingling scents for me to know what I was dealing with, my head was throbbing and I could feel Abeloth’s absence. I needed to get somewhere safe so he could heal as well. I needed water and a car to get the hell out of this maze.I peered through the glass partition of the door in the hallway and saw another hallway with more cell doors similar to the one I just escaped from. ‘How many people are they keeping here?’ I thought to myself.I opened the door and started making my way down the hallway when I suddenly stopped in front of one of the cells. I would recognize his scent anywhere but I couldn’t believe that he’d be here. I looked at the ring of keys I’d taken from Clifford’s belt and tried them until finally one unlocked the cell door and I pulled it open.“Ryder?” he said my name in his hoarse voice.“Fuck Elio, how did they get you?” I asked him as he stumbled to the door.“They told me you were dead,” he said as he reached me and grabbed me in a hug.“What

Chapter Forty-Six

I met Jack in a dark alleyway after Felix and I had completed our first assignment. We had both been shot and we were bleeding as we heard the high heels click clack towards us. He had smelled our blood and we both looked at the big man that stood in front of us wearing a skin tight dress. Jack was also Jackie and he loved to dress up and perform at a downtown club over weekends.Jack had loaded us in his car and taken us home, he was a lone wolf and preferred it that way. We became friends and whenever we travelled through Oklahoma we would drop in on him. He had cried when I called him with the news that Felix had been killed.During the day Jack was also into black market dealings and apparently his wolf had told him he could trust the dragon and vampire. Jack had lost his fair share of bets with Felix and we always had fun as Jack showed us off to his other cross dressing friends when we watched him perform.“You’ll drink my tea or I’ll make you,” Jack said as I opened my eyes. He

Chapter Forty-Seven

It was nearing five pm when I parked the truck on the outskirts of Broadview and opened the bag Jack left for me on the back seat. It contained combat gear and I had to smile at how well he knew me when it came to things like this. I changed my clothes as I stood next to the car and checked the weapons bag.Damn, I love that man! There was a bow and arrow and I caught the scent of poison on the arrows. Jack had included knives and guns and enough bullets to take out a small army, I knew they would all be laced as well.I strapped everything to my body and I felt more comfortable in my own skin than I had in a long time. We were both looking forward to ending this thing and killing our enemies. It was almost dark by the time I was done and Abeloth separated from me and stretched his massive body.“Did you put on weight?” I asked him as he blew smoke in my direction.“Just get on my back halfwit,” he said as I smiled.“Just like old times my friend,” I said as I mounted him.“Yeah I do

Marlo blinded the people in the foyer of the hotel as we walked inside, Tank carried Carlson and I carried Albert. Basil and Elio walked behind us as Marlo led our little group down the hallway to the ballroom where we could hear the music and voices.“Are you sure you want to do it this way?” Basil asked me.“The most influential Sires and dragonkin is in that room together with the Elders of our region, what better setting is there?” I asked him.“You have blood on your face,” he said to me.“Just adds to my flair for the dramatic,” I said as Tank laughed.“Little Ryder, you always know how to make an entrance,” he said to me.“Let’s make an entrance then,” Marlo said as she rubbed her hands together and stood facing the double doors.“I feel like we need a theme song,” Elio said suddenly and Marlo started laughing.“Piss off Elio, just open the doors Marlo,” I said with a sigh and adjusted Albert over my shoulder.Marlo’s eyes glowed white as the doors flew open and hit the walls o

The three Elders arrived about two hours before the meeting was due to start and we sat in my office as they paged through the files that we had gathered. I was busy putting the rest of the evidence on a hard drive for them.“Sire Albert has been singing like a canary,” Elder Michael said as he closed the file he’d been reading.“He thinks he can escape execution if he provides us with enough information,” Elder Victor said.“You should also talk to Wentworth, he sent out teams last night to gather up the rest of the rogue groups,” I said to them.“Why don’t you just tell us exactly what happened,” Elder Cliff said.“That’s why I called this lair meeting, I have no intention of hiding or lying about anything,” I said.“These really are dire circumstances and we can’t move forward without all the information,” Elder Cliff said.“I want to negotiate a deal before I tell my story,” I said to them.“What sort of deal?” Elder Victor asked me.“I’ll hand over everything I know, enough infor
