Chapter: 41

Brooke. The discussion about soulmates has left me in a weird mood, so much so that I don’t even notice Caster until he approaches me. Alexander had been called into the Forge to help his workmates with some specialty weapon they are creating, and he’d left while I was in the library. Soon after, I’d gotten bored of just sitting there, and decided to come outside.I am thinking hard about the bond created between souls and how it feels so natural as I sit outside the Forge on a wooden bench, waiting for Alexander to end his work when he appears next to me.“You seem to be deep in thought,” A voice comes next to me, making me flinch. I snap my head to see who it is, and of course, my eyes land on Caster. After his words at dinner, Alexander’s younger brother left a bad impression on my mind. I wasn’t all that taken by him from the beginning, but his condescending attitude and the implication that I was weakly grated against my nerves. From my interactions with the werewolves I’d come to

Caster. All through my journey, I think about her. She’s in my mind constantly. Ever since I saw her, sitting on my brother’s childhood bed, dressed in one of my mother’s old white gowns that made her look tiny, looking absolutely lost, trying to not let her fear show…her beauty had been like the brightest star in the night sky, a beacon in the dark. That was the first time in my life that my heart skipped a beat for a woman. And she had been such a nice distraction from everything that was going on.The night darkened as I run through the Lunar woods, and the sun sets over the western mountains. The never-ending noise of cicadas and crickets that is a staple to the Lunar woods creates a haunting melody when paired with the rustling wind. Somewhere, an owl hoots, and various creatures of the night squeal as they whiz and fly past me. I run, through trees and boulders, jumping over the number of creeks, brooks, and streams that litter the forest bed. My vision in wolf form is as clear a

Brooke. Alexander and his colleagues ‘employ’ me at the Forge. My job is to be their assistant. I know nothing about metalwork, but I’m an extra pair of hands that can tend to the hearth, carry things around, organize their inventory and help around the Forge every other way while they toiled over metal. Aside from them, I had to clean up the Forge every morning and evening before and after they worked. In return for my labor, I will be getting five gold coins at the end of the week. I had no idea about the worth of money, and frankly didn’t even think I needed a salary given how I was being housed by the Alpha family which provided me with food and clothing, but Alexander and Maddox had insisted.“Being financially independent is essential for a wolf,” Alexander had told me, “Your labor has a value, Brooke, and you should take it.”“But what am I supposed to do with the money?” I’d asked, genuinely confused.“Spend it on the market. Buy some clothes, food, accessories, weapons, books

Brooke. Maddox doesn’t even stay for breakfast. He’s clearly very excited and grabs a bread roll of the basket on the table before rushing off. Natalie stares after him, stunned.“That man,” She shakes her head after a beat of silence, “And his instant plans. I swear to the Goddess,” muttering under her breath, the Luna gets up from the table, “If you children can excuse me, I must go after my mate to help with planning.”As soon as she rushes off, I turn to Alexander, “So, what’s a pack run?” I question.“It’s this activity we do on full moon days,” He explains, his eyes twinkling from delight, “Where we all run around the pack territory in our wolf forms. And by us, I mean all the werewolf adults in the pack.”“Do you do it monthly?”“No, not really? Just when father feels like it,” Alexander shrugs, “It’s not a must to have a run every full moon, but it’s one of my favorite activities. The full moon is the time when shifters of all kinds get more in touch with their animal side, so

Chapter: 45

Brooke “Are you sure Alexander asked you to do this?” I question as we walk through the forest, “I was with him the whole time today and yesterday and all the days before, and he didn’t mention anything like this.”“That’s why it’s a surprise, Brooke!” Jenna replied in an excited tone, “You’re not meant to know it’s supposed to happen.”“But why would he want to meet me in the forest?” I question, feeling lost, “I could’ve just met him at the Forge.”“Brooke, I don’t know why he wanted to meet you in the forest, trust me, I’m as puzzled as you are although I may have a few guesses,” Jenna looks over her shoulder at me with a smile, “Just go along with it and see what he wants. Maybe his answer will delight you.”Some niggles in my mind as I follow Jenna through the forest. I’m not particularly familiar with this part, I remember walking through this area with Alexander once, but no more than that. The Lunar woods looks pretty similar everywhere, so I have a hard time deciphering where

Brooke. I start to walk back to where I came from, openly crying and feeling like something bad was ready to jump out of the shadows and get me then and there, whipping my head like a spooked gazelle, thinking that’s better than just standing where Jenna left me. My throat hurts from all the screaming I’ve been doing, but I can’t stop myself. I croak for help, for Alexander or Jenna or for anybody else to hear me. The moon starts to rise in the sky, and through the gaps in the leaf canopy overhead, I can see it. That reminds me of the pack run that was happening tonight. Maybe if I manage to walk in the right direction, I would be able to stumble into the pack.I don’t understand why Jenna did what she did. I don’t know if she was lying or telling the truth when she said that she was taking me to meet Alexander, but I believe she was lying because I’m certain that Alexander would never have me abandoned in the middle of the forest like this. My heart tells me that Alexander doesn’t ev

Alexander. “Hey, have you seen Brooke?” I ask yet another man in the pack as I walk through the market, wondering where the girl was. Brooke had left the Forge in the evening to go and train in the Archery ranges, with the promise of returning to the Forge to carry out the rest of her shift duties before we could both get off to pursue the endeavor of discovering her wolf. But after she left, she never came back.I waited for her at the Forge, wondering if she’d forgotten about the time, which was strange because Brooke was very mindful about such things. And she never did her work halfway, she made sure to finish all her duties before she left the Forge. So why is she still absent?Knowing that something out of the ordinary was happening, I made my way to the training ranges and searched the whole area from top to bottom, but she was nowhere to be seen. I searched the Archery range and the weaponry twice, and even all the close combat areas, but Brooke was absent. That’s when I start

Brooke.“No, stop, please,” I curl into a ball on the forest floor with my eyes scrunched shut tightly, my palms slapped over my ears as I try to stop my mind from flitting through all these anxiety-inducing images. I feel like I’m paralyzed, I can’t move my body, but how could I when I don’t even have command over my mind? My head hurts from what’s happening within, and I don’t know what’s transpiring. Since I saw the cliff, the dark chasm of my mind had erupted, and things that I have never seen before were making a reappearance, running through my mind’s eye like galloping horses, too fast to decipher, too brief to have any context.I hear a keening cry rip off my throat, and suddenly, I am plunging into a scene.I sit in front of a fireplace, staring at the mantle. On the top of it is a picture, a painting made quite crudely. I am no older than ten, but even I can say how the shadows and lights of the picture are off, considering how accurate they were on all the paintings that hun

Brooke. “So, that cliff,” Alexander points at the nightmare-inducing clifftop which I saw through the tree with an incredulous expression on his face, “Made you have a panic attack.”“It makes no sense,” I agree with his tone, “I honestly don’t know what the hell happened. One moment I was fine,” I bite the insides of my cheeks, “Well, not exactly fine, I was very distressed because of being lost and all, and annoyed because of all the mosquitoes, but the moment I saw the cliff my brain just went crazy. I can’t even explain it.”“I see,” Alexander mutters, staring at the cliff with a frown, “We should definitely talk to Dale about this when we get back home. This is the second time you had a panic attack.”“Is it bad?” I ask, feeling my heart drop.“I don’t know, it might be,” He shrugs, and then sighs, “I’m glad I found you though. I was so worried that something happened to you.”“I’m sorry I made you worried,” Feeling guilty, I mutter, “I never meant for any of this to happen.”“No

Chapter: 50

Brooke.Alexander is kissing me!Alexander is KISSING me!Oh, Goddess, I don’t know how to proceed. I’m frozen on the spot, but my heart is soaring and singing. My blood is rushing up and down my body, and I swear I’m holding my breath in. A few moments ago, my mind was flashing with thoughts, but now it’s at a standstill. There’s only one thought echoing in my head.Alexander .is. kissing. me.And just as suddenly as he pressed his lips to mine, he pulls away. The expression on his face can only be described as shock and horror, and he scrambles back away from me.“Oh, my Goddess,” He whispers, “What have I done?”“You kissed me,” I reply like an idiot, gaping at him.“Oh, no,” He buries his face in his hands, shaking his head, “Oh, no, no, no, this cannot be happening.”“I don’t think I’ve ever kissed anyone,” I find myself saying, “Not even in the past.”“I’m so sorry,” Alexander apologizes, “I wasn’t thinking, you were just there and something was telling me to just do it-““I like
