Chapter: 31

Brooke. “Father is waiting at the village square with mother and Caster,” Alexander tells me as we make our way through the mansion gardens. It’s a beautifully sunny day, and everything feels lively. All the flower plants in the garden seem to be abloom, and their fragrance mixed with the scent of the cut grass creates a wonderful combination. The hilltop on which the mansion is situated isn’t that tall, but it’s steep enough that you could see the whole pack village when you stand on top of it. I pause for a moment to take everything in. The forest surrounding the village of the pack is green and thriving, and a range of tall, craggy mountains surrounds the pack territory. Down in the village, we could see people gathering at the Village Square. There is a stage built there, which looks ancient like most of the buildings in the pack. To the opposite side of it lies the temple, looking bigger than before in the morning light. Near the village borders, werewolves run in wolf forms.“Br

Chapter: 32

Brooke. After the Alpha introduces me to the pack, questions after questions arise from the gathered crowd, overwhelming me. They aren’t hostile, but their enthusiasm is…loud. I feel anxious being on the stage, so before he answers all the questions put out by the crowd, Maddox asks Alexander to take me away, and I gladly get off the stage. From the corner of my eyes, I think I see Caster trying to make his way toward us, but before I can make sure Alexander grabs my arm and pulls me away from the crowd. We stop as we reach the beginning of the marketplace, and Alexander chuckles breathily.“I believe that went well,” Alexander says, and I glance at him.“You do?”“Yes, because they didn’t start to attack you with rotten fruits all of a sudden,” He points out and I scoff. pale at that. “Do they really do that?”“Only to minor criminals. If you take anything that isn't yours without permission from its owner, you will be tied to a pole on that stage, and the pack members will pommel y

Chapter: 33

Brooke. “I noticed,” I say to Alexander as we make our way through the market to the forest, “That you don’t like talking about your tier.”Alexander chuckles grimly, “What gave it away?”“Your expression, you always look like you bit into a lime when anyone mentions the fact, you’re a Delta or your Midnight ceremony,” I point out before I realize that he was asking the question rhetorically. But I brush that off, “Are you unhappy with your tier?”He is silent for a moment.“I suppose I am. I never expected it in the first place.” He speaks. “Everyone expected me to be the Alpha, including myself because that’s the way that things have always been. But after finding out that I was a Delta at my Midnight ceremony, I felt as if my worth had gone down. I still feel like that sometimes, but I’m trying to get better. There is nothing wrong with being a Delta. There’s nothing wrong with any of the tiers, each one of them has its importance.”“Can you tell me more about the tiers?” I inquire

Chapter: 34

Brooke. “Oh, wow,” I whisper, “You weren’t bluffing when you said you knew exciting places.”In front of me is a waterfall, and it's beautiful. Water gushes down a protrusion in the cliff the waterfall is formed at, framed by vines that are full of purple and blue colored flower blossoms that smell amazing. The waterfall is tall, so when the water reaches over level it’s nothing like water but a fine mist that makes the whole area look like it’s surrounded by fog. There is an opening in the thick tree canopy right above the waterfall, allowing golden sun rays to fall in and reflect off the crystal-clear water of the pool that trickles down. The water in the pool is shallow, and from where I’m standing, I can see fishes of various colors float through the river-smooth rocks.“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Alexander says, “I found this place when I was only a pup, and ever since the day I saw it, whenever I need to get away from the pack I come here.”“Do you mean to say that no one but yo

Chapter: 35

Brooke. “Oh, Goddess, Brooke,” Alexander rushes next to me as I fall onto the floor, struggling to breathe. I don’t know what’s happening to me to be honest, a moment ago I was fine, but now it’s like my body had suddenly forgotten how to breathe. Panic rushes through my head as I try to force myself to get air in, but it’s not working, and my chest feels like it’s on fire. The world starts to darken, and everything is shivering…Suddenly, two warm arms wrap around me, and I feel a steady heartbeat next to mine. A gust of hot breath rushes at my ear, “Brooke, breathe. Come on, breathe with me. There's nothing to fear. Just inhale, and exhale. Do it with me, follow my rhythm. You can do this.”I try to do as he says. When he inhales, I feel the air move near my face, and I breathe in with him. My lungs scream with relief, and I feel the gust of his exhalation. I follow him as he breathes steadily. He murmurs in my ear, telling me I’m alright, that I’m safe, that nothing can harm me, an

Chapter: 36

Brooke. I have never seen such a long dining table in my life. The main dining room of the Blackwood mansion is lit with a number of torches, a chandelier, and of course, a massive fireplace. The long glass windows of the room have been opened to let in fresh air and breeze because of the heat that comes from the fireplace, which kind of makes me question why it has been lit in the first place, considering how it was in the middle of summer. There are people already seated around the table, some of them I remember seeing in the morning. Maddox sits at the head of the table, dressed for the occasion in clothes similar to what he wore at the Temple. To his right sits the Luna, Alexander, and Caster’s mother whose name I still don’t know about. Next to the Luna, there are two spots, one for Caster and the other for Alexander. On the left side of the table, the seat next to the Alpha is empty, but the others are filled with the elders and the rest of the pack members who are in attendance

Chapter: 37

Brooke. After that incident, dinner ended pretty quickly. The air was thick with tension, and none of us felt particularly hungry. Caster looked angry, and Maddox looked annoyed. The Luna looked…troubled. Alexander was quiet and nervous. The elders engaged in some small talk with me, asking about how I found the pack and such mundane details, but that conversation too died down when food was brought. Caster excused himself from the table moments after, followed by his mother. After that, everyone knew the time was up, so with a sigh, Maddox dismissed everyone else.“Well, that happened,” I say to Alexander as we meet outside the dining room on a balcony that overlooks the pack village. The Alpha is speaking with the elders and the other pack members in the compound right underneath, and all around us, the night is so peacefully at odds with the tension the dinner created in everyone who attended.Alexander sighs with the weight of a world on his shoulders, “Caster is an idiot.”I have

Chapter: 38

Brooke. Alexander takes me to the Training ranges again, and this time, I try out the weapons. Kind of. "These are the practice weapons," Alexander declares as he gestures at the weaponry with a flourish, "None of them are sharp, and almost all of them are made from wood. We normally use these for the pups, but since you have no recollection of handling a weapon, I thought that it would be prudent to start you off with them too."I make a face, "Seriously, pup weapons?""I can't risk letting a novice handle real weapons," He wags a finger at me, "We maintain the weapons to the best degree so they are quite sharp. One simple mistake in handling can result in a grave injury, and I am not going to risk that. So should you.""Fine," I huff in agreement, although I still feel silly. Alexander takes a wooden sword off the pile of practice weapons and swings it in the air, "This is my weapon of choice, the sword. It's very handy and good for close-range combat. I carry a short sword when

Chapter: 39

Brooke. "Okay, so first you need to take care of your form," says Jenna, taking her own bow in her hand. She shakes her body twice before stamping her feet on the grass-covered ground. She stands to my side, turning her body to face the bull's eye, "Keep your body like this. You have to line your weight with the back leg and make sure your posture is comfortable. Especially make sure that the muscles in your hands are relaxed before you shoot."I follow her instructions and stand accordingly. Taking the grip of the long bow in my non-dominant hand, I stand facing my own Bull's eye. The posture feels familiar, and the next instructions I'm given come naturally."Grip your bow with your non-dominant hand and nock the arrow to the arrow rest over your finger, light this and line the end with the string right in the middle, like this," Jenna takes an arrow off her on the quiver, and nocks it with practiced ease. I do the same with my own fake arrow, "Now while keeping the arrowhead steady

Chapter: 40

Brooke. “Here,” Alexander sidles next to me on the table I am sitting at, with a book open in front of me. He shows me the book he’d found just now. It’s a book with a dark, leather cover with the title ‘Creatures of the Lunar woods’ on it, “I read the synopsis, and it’s got a section dedicated to all the packs in the Lunar woods. Granted the book was written decades ago, but most of the packs in the woods are ancient, so almost all of them are still here.”“Thank you,” I say, pushing away the folk tale book I was reading, “By the way, I forgot to ask, are there any other werewolf packs near the Lunar Legacy?”“There are several,” Alexander replies in a low tone so as not to disturb the other readers, “The Lunar Legacy is pretty isolated from everyone else because we’re in the middle of the mountains. You need to go out of the mountain range to find the other packs. From the top of my mind, I can recall the packs Gemini, Blood Moon, Stoneridge, and of course, the Crescent Moon pack be
