Chapter 40

Flames ablaze. Thundering roars. Heavy footsteps. Screams of fear. Deafening explosions. One being, that stands above all. The humanoid figure was tiny, yet it appeared so large. It was not an illusion. The large presence was from its energy that towers to the sky seemingly to no end. Its blazing eyes glared in bloodshot. The scene changed. Now a black black empty space filled the sight. One cannot tell whether one was closing its eyes or it just simply pitch black. Until another figure appeared but only for a brief moment and said a few words. “Be prepared. For what’s coming.” “Haah-!” Matthew woke up and instantly took a deep breath. He sat straight on his bed and he was panting heavily. His head hurts, but he did not pay much mind as his thoughts are more focused on something else. “What was that?” Matthew asked himself. His breathing

Chapter 41: Old Dog's Got Some Bite

“When you say that I could try training with the butler, I didn’t think that it would be right now,” said Matthew as he picked up the wooden sword handed to him by the maids. “Bart does not do much other than directly serving me, so he has time on his hands,” said Gustav.”So feel free to train with him whenever.” “My lord, are you sure about me training this young man?” Asked Bart the butler. “It is fine. I will just be in my office. Well, good luck to you Matthew.” Gustav said lastly before heading off. “I could also train you if you want, but close combat isn’t my forte,” said Yuki. “It’s fine. I’ll give this a go first.” Matthew spun the sword in his hand. “So how are we gonna do this?” “Hmm you are already well trained as a Hunter

Chapter 42: Didn't Go As Planned

The weekend, the day when most people were not working and just enjoyed their day without worries of their work. Naturally the streets were packed with people bustling about their activities. Merchants and shop owners were handling their dear customers with smiles. The sun was out and only slightly hidden behind the clouds, a perfect day to go out. So was Cecilia and Phillip who once again were going out together. They only wore casual wear to blend in the sea of people. They were sitting at a table in a restaurant to have lunch together. One would have to pay close attention to keep track of them. “So… Remind me why we are spying on them?” Matthew asked Rose who was sitting in front of him. “I already told you!” Rose said with an angry but not loud voice. “I forgot.” “Hah…” Rose sighed. “There’s something

Chapter 43: Bloody Marie

Yuki was currently in her room, just laying on her bed while reading a book. Her eyes shifted left and right as she slowly moved down the lines of the paragraph. Small gasps and giggles came from her every now and then. She rolled around on her bed while covering her face with the book. “Aww~ this is so sweet! They are too sweet! Just get married already!” She shouted inside the book. KNOCK KNOCK “Uwaa!” Yuki was very surprised by the sudden knock. “Miss Nakamura, Lord Gustav wishes to see you right now.” A male voice, possibly the butler’s, came through the door. “O-oh, alright. Be there in a sec.” Yuki replied back while hiding the book under her pillow. She got off the bed and tied her hair back into a ponytail. Then she put on a proper shirt and bent down to tie her shoes. “W

Chapter 44: Imprisoned

“Get up boy. This is not the end. Get up!” A distant voice in the darkness called out. A familiar voice. Matthew’s eyes slowly opened. He groaned as he tried to sit upright. His neck hurt and he wanted to massage it, when he moved his hand, it was stopped by something and he heard some metallic clatters. Matthew looked at his hands that were locked by metal tied together. “Chains?” Then he looked at his feet, they were also chained. He looked around him. It was dim and had poor lighting, but he was able to make out the interior of the room. It was barred with iron, the floor was made of hard cement, the wall was made of earth and there were stairs to his left. Matthew was confident after seeing this, he was now in a prison. But what has he done to be imprisoned? Just as Matthew wondered, a voice suddenly came from the dark, unlit area. “Ah, you

Chapter 45: Back Up

In an alleyway, away from the crowds of people, two figures were having a conversation. “Sorry, but no.” “Come on Chia. Help me out here.” Yuki begged the girl. “I’m already busy with other things, okay? And you still haven’t paid the last favour you owe me.” Chia looked and shut her eyes from Yuki. “Erk! That, I uhh… I promise I’ll pay it back someday, but right now I really need your help, please!” Yuki clapped her hands together as begged even more. Chia took a peek at the pitiful Yuki in front of her. She sighed. “Hah~ fine, I’ll at least hear you out, I’ll decide later.” “Great!” Yuki immediately cheered up as if all that pleading was just an act. “So, what is it?” Chia turned her head to face Yuki. Yuki was slight

Chapter 46: Controlled

Rose opened her eyes slowly. Bright sunlight blinded her eyes for a moment before she recovered her sight. She blocked the light with her hand and got up. Her neck hurt as if she was hit hard by something. Her mind was a bit fuzzy, but she remembered what happened. Someone grabbed her from behind and knocked her out, she didn’t know who though. She just noticed that her body felt a bit lighter, so she looked down at herself to inspect. To her surprise, she was only wearing a thin plain white one piece dress. Now that she looked down, she also realised she was on a bed and in a room. The room was empty, only having a bed and a window to her right and a door to her left. Judging from the wallpaper, she was in quite a fancy building. Was she back at the mansion? What happened while she was out? Rose stepped down from the bed, her bare feet touched the cold tile. The room was very plain, even the b

Chapter 47: Matthew's Escape

Rain poured like cats and dogs on this particular night. The earth wall was moist as water seeped through the soil. The cement floor was also a bit wet and very cold. Matthew sat on the floor with his legs crossed and his hands on his lap. It was said that this position helps someone to keep a calm nature as if they are one with the surrounding. Matthew took deep and steady breaths. He was controlling his astra and kept it flowing inside him, trying to not let it leak out. He had lost track of time and had no idea of how many hours or days he was in the prison. He could’ve easily escaped by bending the bars and sneaking out, but by the off chance that he encounters the demon Phillip was talking about, he would be in trouble. He did not care if he lost, but he did, who would save his friends? Even though Yuki was a high ranked Hunter, she herself said that she was not sure of taking on a demon. And so for now, Matth

Chapter 48: Mind Control Spells

A few days before Matthew escaped the prison. Chia was watching her boss reading a newspaper on a couch. Chia took a deep breath, and she approached Susan. “Boss.” Chia called out to Susan. Susan glanced at Chia. “Yes?” “Can I talk to you for a bit?” Chia asked politely. “Oh, sure.” Susan put down the newspaper on the tea table in front of her. “What is it?” “It’s about the Noble we are investigating.” “Mmhm, what about it?” Chia silently took another deep breath. “I was walking around the city. Then I overheard the people saying that Phillip is dating someone. And I also think that the girl involved is under a spell.” “Hm? What makes you say that?” Susan tilted her head a bit.

Chapter 49: Yuki's Thoughts

“I see, that’s how it is.” Yuki cupped her chin. She was sitting on top of a box in the alleyway while Chia was leaning against the wall in front of her. “What would you say the kind of spell your friend is under?” Chia asked. “I don’t see any difference in her. It’s neither [Mind Control] or [Total Control] I don’t think.” Yuki said. “So it’s either the lower tier ones?” “Yes. Not sure which one since they are pretty close. But at least I know that they still have some consciousness. So how do I get her back to her senses?” “Tina said you have to make the caster stop their spell or you can also snap some sense into your friend.” “By stop, does killing the caster count as making them stop?” Yuki asked. Killing off the caster would be the easiest o
