Chapter 1

Kioni Turner I ran as fast as my feet could take me. I was tired and afraid, but I had to keep going. Everything happened so fast in my head. Where should I go and who will help me now? The only thing that was on my mind was to run. Come on, Ki, just a few more blocks. Don’t let them catch you. You are not a runner, but today you run. That is all I kept thinking in my head. Run as fast as you can. Don't stop. Don't look back. Get as far away as possible because if they catch you, it's all over. BANG! “I’m sorry!” I stopped and heaved in deep breaths. I chanced a look back to see if they were close. “Hey, it’s ok. I wasn’t looking,” he responded, holding my shoulders. I stopped listening to him and looked back again, and all I saw was a silhouette drawing closer. They were going to catch if I stayed in this spot. I knew my tired feet had to move again. Quickly, I pulled away from him and ran, but my bracelet slipped from my hand and fell. I looked back, not realizing where I wa

Chapter 2

Kioni Life has a way of being funny sometimes. Here I am a psychologist who lost her memory 10 years ago. I meet different patients daily who tell me their problems and help better their lives and thoughts, yet I can’t seem to find a way to help myself remember my past. I have exhausted every book on memory loss, even resorted to crazy ideas I found on g****e and yet everything I tried seemed to not work. This frustrates me a lot and I wish I could have a memory of who I was before all of this. All I remember is Ki, and I wonder what my full name could be. Kira. Kimberly. Just Kim or maybe Kesha. The search is long considering I'm working with only 2 letters. “What do you think I should do?” Shit, not again. I had drifted off from my patient and focused on myself again. So not professional. I exhaled and focused. “What do you think you should do?” I looked at him before I looked down and pretended to jot something on my clipboard. I prayed he would give me something to work wit

Chapter 3

Kioni I have no idea why I make myself run because it’s not something I enjoy but deep down there is this urge that makes me run. Today was different and I woke up with a need to run the extra mile this morning without care that my head was pounding, and my mind was going crazy.  The broken record and nightmare dream last night were different. I’m not sure if it was a memory or part of my subconscious wanting to remember but it had put me off. I couldn’t sleep after I woke up drenched in sweat after 4 pm. After my run, I decided to go to work early so I can speak to my father who is also my therapist. He is the one who has listened to me for the past 10 years before he decided to adopt me. No one came looking for me and there was never a case report of a missing 16-year-old in the city. There was an investigation made to search f

Chapter 4

James I walked back to my desk where the file was so I could review the whole thing again. I wish my partner was here, but he had to get married and take a vacation for two weeks leaving me to solve this case all by myself. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and placed it on the table. I took a sigh before pushing the chair back so I could work on a lead or something before Romans got wind of the lie spewed about a lead. That man had eyes everywhere and nothing ever got past him. He was a good chief but a pain in the ass sometimes. I skimmed the file again searching for something I might have missed. I knew the obvious reasons the parents never approved of their daughter dating a guy who is not from their elite circle which was bullshit. I rolled my eyes skimming further to the video of their breakup that went viral over the whole campus to Esther getting jealous of Elijah and his new girlfriend. The whole damn case is like a soap opera coming into real life. For once I agreed with t

Chapter 5

James If Wagner was around, he would have had something to talk about for the rest of my life. He was just as bad with the teasing as Harper and sometimes those two loved getting off at tag-teaming against me just to make me miserable or piss me off. I took a sharp breath, blinking at the perfect woman that was walking in my direction. Her eyes were glued to papers in her hands as she walked confidently to the desk. I never knew heels would look that sexy on a woman until her. I looked up from her ankles to the stunning pencil skirt and blouse that was tucked in. True beauty is what she is. Her clothes fitted perfectly right. Damn that blouse she tucked in that skirt because the moment her hand dropped the papers on the desk, I knew I was fucked. Her ass popped higher when she leaned at the desk and man, those legs and those heels were enough to make me feel rigid. I wondered why I hadn't been in this area before, because she was made for me. I don't know why the universe had been

Chapter 6

James “She’s pretty,” Harper spoke over my ear and I jumped. “God Harper, must you always do that?” I snapped dropping my drawing pencil. “Why so jumpy detective?” She laughed while dropping a mug beside my table. “I’m not jumpy,” I scoffed, grabbing the steaming mug before taking a sip. “You hardly draw these days and you missed dinner so decided to get you a coffee,” she shrugged. “You are nosy that's why you are here,” I rolled my eyes, setting my mug down. “So, who’s the pretty lady?” she wiggled her eyebrows at me, “I have only seen you draw a pretty girl once and that was a long time ago,” she added. Harper was just as observant with a sharp memory as me, but there was one more factor: she was nosy. She is the only one who knows how to startle me because she is a sneaky troublemaker who likes hovering over me while I draw. She knows that when I draw, I lose focus of my surroundings with my attention directed to making a drawing come to life. “Stop being a nosy little bra

Chapter 7

James After an hour of skipping and punching next on my laptop I had almost missed the date in question and smirked as I watched the proof that I needed in front of me. Esther Hernandez was a filthy rich liar and the proof was all too clear to miss. I smiled at the discovery as I paused the footage. I hit myself in the head because I had skimmed through the report and it was too obvious. The clues were all there and I was ignoring them. She was jealous or embarrassed when Elijah broke things off with her. She was too proud to accept he had moved on. How do I always miss the answer when it’s always in front of me? James Miller Pega sometimes you can be so dull but right now you are one clever detective. The town will be talking about this for a few weeks. I laughed, shaking my head as I pressed the mouse to drag back on the footage and watched it again. It was like watching a crime series but this time it featured three people, Elijah the victim. Esther, as the puppet and mommy dear

Chapter 8

Kioni I could feel shaking as something rattled or moved and my body was supine. I couldn’t figure out what was happening. I tried to open my eyes but the blinding light was too much, making my eyes roll back. I wanted to speak or get an idea of where I was but something was happening within me. My body was burning up. I could feel it and my head felt like concrete as if it was forcefully pressed down trapping me. It was too much and something was fighting and hammering in front of my heavy eyes. My body was resisting and I was fighting with a younger version of myself for control and I had managed to fight back which made me hear voices. “What's happening to her?” I heard a voice shouting but I couldn’t remember where I knew the voice from. “Stay on your seat, sir. She is convulsing. Dean, how far until we get to the hospital?” A female voice shouted. The voices faded again as if I was forced back into my trance. I was face to face with the one who was responsible for everything a

Chapter 9

James I woke up in a good mood and I couldn’t wait to get to the office and hopefully the warrant of arrest will be on my desk. I wanted to do this as quickly as possible and hopefully close the case by the afternoon. It will give me enough time to drop by Parker & Associates and show her my gratitude and work on my Pega charm. I couldn’t wait to see her again. I smiled. “Jesus put a shirt on. You own a closet full of them.” Harper walked into the kitchen with a yawn. “Good morning to you too. Grumpy much today?” “You are in a good mood I see. What the hell did you do?” She asked, grabbing a mug to pour herself the already brewing coffee. “Can’t I be nice without you being suspicious? What am I to you, some bad guy?” I looked at her rolling my eyes. “God this tastes awful,” she spoke spitting back the coffee in her mug, “No you are my very good brother,” she responded and I smiled, “but you never cook so it’s either you finally decided to get rid of me or you want something,” she

Chapter 10

Kioni I could smell the scent of disinfectant I had familiarized myself with over the months I had been hospitalized after the accident. The stench waffled in my nostrils as I opened my eyes feeling the worst of headaches. I blinked around the white walls steering my head with a wince. “She’s awake,” I heard my mother speak. “Thank God,” I heard my father speak after her as he jumped to be next to me. “What happened?” I asked, blinking again. “My sweet child,” my mother moved closer brushing her warm hands on my cheek, “Something happened last night, and you were rushed here.” “Let’s not talk about this right now, dear,” my father looked at me with a smile before looking at mother, “She has been through a lot and if it wasn’t for Nick,” he shook his head fighting words. “Who the hell is Nick?” I asked, looking at them. “Oh, my sweet baby, you know Nick, right?” she forced a smile before they shared a look. “What is happening, mom?” I looked at her first, “Daddy?” I looked at h
