Chapter 8

Sleeping in his bed disgusted me, and hearing his apologies made me feel sick. Still, I couldn’t forget what Emma said. I wanted to remind him, but I didn’t know how.

Benjamin locked himself in his room for a full day and night, until the housekeeper came to knock on the door.

“Mr. Shane, an elderly lady is here. She says she can help you to see the person you want to.”

Benjamin gave a bitter smile. “The person I want to see is dead.”

Nevertheless, he stood up and went downstairs.

I followed behind him and saw the old woman as well. The moment my eyes landed on her, I felt as if she could really see me. I couldn’t explain why, but it felt like she was looking straight through me.

Benjamin’s voice was hoarse. “Who are you?”

The old woman didn’t even acknowledge Benjamin. She kept her gaze fixed on me, and our eyes met.

“Child, you’ve suffered,” she said.

Her words were filled with such pity that I felt an overwhelming sense of comfort. It was as if I had finally found a place
