As I waited for my ride, Ken sent me a message.

[Mom's headache has been acting up again these days. Go over and give her a massage. She also wants a home-cooked meal from you.]

Back when I was trying to marry Ken, I did everything I could to please his family. He had long grown used to my efforts.

He did not even bother checking if I was available or mention Jenny faking her illness. He simply expected me to drop everything and go.

I smiled bitterly, put my phone away, and headed to my new job instead.

Ken had given the big accounts I worked hard to secure over to Jenny, and demanded I brief her on every client's preferences to make her transition seamless, but why should I just hand over everything I fought for?

Since no contract had been signed, I convinced the client to work with my new company instead. I also informed my old clients about my new position and managed to negotiate a special rate for them if they chose to follow me.
