CHAPTER 4
"Nick! Nick, where are you?" Alice's voice reverberated through the hallway as she burst into her brother's apartment, urgency radiating from her every step. She had come straight from the airport, her irritation simmering just below the surface as she prepared to tackle the mess that was her brother's latest scandal. "Alice?" Nick's voice called from the kitchen. Moments later, he emerged, a bright red apron wrapped clumsily around his neck and torso. Alice raised an eyebrow, her frustration momentarily forgotten. "Is that… an apron? You picked up cooking again?" Her voice dripped with sarcasm. "Sure did, kinda had to after moving out" Nick shrugged, nonchalant as he strolled over to grab her bag. "You planning to stay the night? I could use the company while I whip up my masterpiece." "You wish." She smirked, rolling her eyes. "I didn't come here for a sleepover. I came to check on you and to—" She paused, her expression darkening as the gravity of the situation settled back in. With a swift motion, she smacked him on the back of the head. "Ow! What the hell was that for?" he yelped, rubbing his scalp as he glared at her. "I warned you, didn't I? I told you she was bad news. I told you she'd pull something like this, but no—you didn't listen. Now, look at us: the company's shares are dropping faster than your dating life," she said, her arms crossed, her tone laced with irritation. Nick sighed, frustration flickering across his face. "People will move on soon enough. I'll just chalk it up to being unlucky in love and accept that I'm destined to be single forever." Alice softened, shaking her head as she tried to reason with him. "Oh, come on. You're only 22. You have plenty of time to figure things out." He shot her a pointed look, crossing his arms defiantly. "You're one to talk. Weren't you the one who claimed all men were the same because of that one guy who cheated on you? You're fucking 26 and still single," he retorted, an obvious note of mockery in his voice. Alice narrowed her eyes, but before he could brace himself, she threw a punch but he darted out of reach, laughter spilling from both of them as she chased him around the living room. Their playful voices echoed off the walls, filling the space with warmth. Finally, they collapsed onto the couch, breathless and grinning, the earlier tension momentarily forgotten. Nick leaned back, catching his breath. "Want some pasta? I made enough to share. I promise it's not as bad as you remember." "Sure," Alice replied, a smirk dancing on her lips. "I could use a good laugh if your cooking's as disastrous as last time." "Just wait and see," he challenged, a glint of mischief in his eyes as he headed back to the kitchen. --- Meanwhile, across town, Alex stood at the door of his mother's sprawling villa. Despite knowing the code, he opted to ring the bell, a barrier he felt he couldn't cross yet. Today, a confrontation was necessary—a long-overdue discussion about her recent decision regarding his future. After a moment, a maid opened the door, bowing politely. "Madam is waiting for you in the living room, sir." Alex nodded, his expression unreadable as he followed the maid, his heart racing with an unsettling mixture of anticipation and dread. Entering the elegant living room, he found his mother poised and expectant, her demeanor as polished as the marble floors. "Mrs. Gray," he greeted coldly, deliberately using her title instead of "mother." He sank into the chair across from her, his eyes sharp and guarded. Mrs. Gray studied him for a moment, a flicker of regret crossing her features before she masked it with her usual composure. "I assume you're here about the marriage arrangement. Are you unhappy with my decision?" Alex's jaw tightened, his tone glacial. "You've made plenty of decisions for me, but marriage? Don't you think that's something I should have a say in? You may be my mother, but you don't own me." As he spoke, the memory of his recent conversation with Chris flooded his mind. Chris had been tasked with investigating Alice, only to find out she was the woman his mother had suddenly deemed suitable for him. What should have been a simple background check had spiraled into a revelation that sent chills down his spine: his mother had already arranged their marriage to be made official by tomorrow. He had intended to find more about her but wasn't planning on going further, he felt attracted to her at first sight but couldn't risk bringing her into his life...he was danger itself and anyone bold enough to get too close could end up hurt, he knew that clearly and that was why he tried hard not to get attached to anyone over the years, only to find out he was already on the verge of becoming engaged. Mrs. Gray took a measured breath, her voice calm yet laced with urgency. "You think I'm doing this for myself? The rumors at the company are spreading like wildfire. They say you avoid women because you're either incapable of commitment or—" She hesitated, choosing her words with care. "Or… gay... You're 29, Alex. Don't you think it's time to settle down?" "And if I don't?" His voice was sharp, cutting through the tension. "If I don't, will that ruin your image and tarnish the company's reputation?" Mrs. Gray's gaze remained steady. "If the gossip continues, your standing within the company could be compromised. You're set to take over fully in just one year. Do you really want that legacy clouded by questions about your personal life?" Alex met her gaze, unflinching. "Did it ever occur to you to ask if I even wanted this?" Her expression softened, almost pleading. "You wouldn't have agreed. And I only arranged a meeting; the final decision is still yours." She paused, studying his face. "Are you possibly already in love with someone else?" He clenched his jaw, steady and emotionless. "No. I'm not." Abruptly, he stood, a cold silence stretching between them as he turned his back. His mother's sigh echoed in the expansive room, a sound laden with unfulfilled hopes. As he walked away, her unspoken wish lingered in the air: that he might one day forgive her for the years lost to silence and secrets...but what those secrets were? He was yet to find outChapter 5Alice's POVI finally arrived at my apartment, feeling the exhaustion settle deep into my bones. All I craved now was a long, hot bath and maybe a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. My feet ached from being cramped in heels all day, and I could feel the tension in my shoulders begging to be released. Dropping my bags in the living room, I headed straight for the bathroom, not even bothering to unpack. As soon as I slid into the bathtub, warm water enveloping me like a comforting embrace, I let out a deep sigh. The weight of the day seemed to melt away. I closed my eyes, sinking further, and felt a sense of peace finally creeping in.But, of course, peace was short-lived. Somewhere in the apartment, my phone began to ring. I'd left it in my purse, which was somewhere in the living room. I briefly considered ignoring it, but then again, I knew my dad would want to hear from me sooner rather than later. But whoever it was would just have to wait a few more minutes. After a good
CHAPTER 6Alice's POVIt was past 7 p.m. when I finally got back home from my dad's house. I headed straight to the bathroom to wash my face, apply my skincare products, and change into my pajamas before retreating to my bedroom. My body had just barely hit the bed when I heard my stomach growl. Right, I'd forgotten dinner. I reached for my phone on the bedside table and ordered a pizza from my favorite restaurant. Placing the phone down, I lay there, staring up at the ceiling as my thoughts drifted back over the day's events."I can't believe I'm getting married to a total stranger," I scoffed to myself. The very thought of marriage made me recall Alex, the guy i almost proposed to, thank god i didn't carry on with my plan, because how the hell would i have explained to him that i was already engaged to someone else and i couldn't go on with the contract agreement... Still, I couldn't shake the inexplicable attraction I'd felt the moment I saw him. Yes, he was handsome, with a high,
CHAPTER 7 Alex's POV After warning her about the suspicious-looking delivery man, I exited the building but stood outside, waiting for him to come out. I couldn't just leave without making sure she was safe. But as the minutes dragged on, worry began to settle in my chest. Five minutes had passed, and there was still no sign of him. Without thinking, I darted back into the building, charging up the stairs two at a time. Taking the elevator would waste precious time—it would be forever before it reached the thirteenth floor as it seemed someone was already inside. Finally reaching her floor, I caught sight of her, struggling as he tried to push her against the wall. His hand moved toward his pocket, and I saw the glint of a knife. The bastard was going to stab her. Instinct took over. I lunged between them, taking the blow meant for her. Pain seared through my hand, but I barely felt it. Rage surged instead. How dare he even think of hurting her. Grabbing him by the collar, I swung
Chapter 8 Alice's POV I couldn't help but feel excited. Why? Because he was coming over today. Yeah, sounds ridiculous, right? We agreed to meet by noon, and I even decided to prepare something nice to serve him when he arrived. But all my cooking efforts ended in total disaster. Why was cooking so freaking hard? I tried making an omelet, but the motherfucker kept turning into scrambled eggs. I attempted to whip up some pudding, but it just wouldn't congeal. I even tried the simplest dish of all—Ramen noodles—but they got too soggy. You know what? I give up. My kitchen sink was now full of used plates and frying pans. I used an entire crate of eggs, and for what? Nothing good came of it. After tossing my apron in frustration onto the kitchen counter, I searched for my phone and decided to order some decent food online. I didn't know what he would like, but since most people liked seafood, I opted for that. I hoped he wasn't allergic. After placing my order, I flung my phone toward
CHAPTER 9 Alex's POV It was well past morning rush hour, so why the hell was I sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic at noon? The honking horns and exhaust fumes did nothing for my already frayed nerves. I hated delays—especially today, of all days. I had an appointment I couldn't miss, a promise I wouldn't break. I fished my phone from my pocket, dialing Michael. He picked up after two rings. "Alex? What's up?" "I need to borrow your motorcycle," I said without preamble, my tone sharper than usual. Michael let out a low chuckle. "Since when do you need a bike to get around?" "Since traffic decided to screw me over at the worst possible time," I snapped, impatience simmering in my voice. "Alright, alright. Where are you?" he asked. "Stuck on the Gardiner. Can't see the end of it." "Man, I thought rush hour was over," he mused. "I'll send one of my guys with the bike. Just hang tight." "Thanks, man," I muttered, ending the call and sinking back against the seat. I was only a f
CHAPTER 10 Alice's POV The gates to Madam Gray's villa were grander than I'd imagined, the kind you only see in movies. As we drove through, I felt a strange flutter in my stomach—a mix of nerves and excitement. My father gave me a reassuring smile, but even he seemed taken aback by the sheer elegance of the place. When we stepped inside, I was hit by a wave of warmth mingling with luxury. The chandelier above sparkled like something out of a fairy tale, casting soft light across cream-colored carpets and walls adorned with art that I was sure must be priceless. Every detail of the villa whispered elegance, and for a moment, I felt like I was in another world entirely. "Breathe, Alice," I whispered to myself. Yet, part of me couldn't help but feel like a stranger stepping into someone else's dream. Madam Gray appeared in the hallway, her smile warm and welcoming. She was more stunning in person than I'd imagined, dressed in a flowing silk gown that seemed to shimmer with every st
CHAPTER 11Alex's POVMy hands clenched around the steering wheel as I drove away from Madam Gray's villa, Alice's face lingering in my mind—the way she'd looked at me tonight, searching for answers I couldn't give her. The memory of her warm gaze and the quiet hurt in her eyes twisted something deep inside me, a reminder of all the reasons I'd sworn to never let anyone close. But then, Alice happened. She walked into my life, turning everything upside down, forcing me to question the walls I'd carefully built around myself. The envelope lay beside me on the passenger seat, its contents burning into my mind. Michael sent it to me saying someone dropped it off and that it was addressed to me, and from the first glimpse of those photos—dozens of pictures of Alice, taken from a distance, in moments she'd never even noticed—I knew who was behind it. The words scrawled on the note felt like a punch to the gut: "Found your Achilles' heel."The message was clear. Marcus had found her.The ma

The threat still echoed in my mind, pulsing with the steady rhythm of my heartbeat: Alice.Marcus Dared to threaten her life, like she was just another pawn in his endless game. This time, he'd gone too far.Naples greeted me with its deceptive charm, bright and chaotic in the early dawn. But beneath the city's beauty lay a darkness, and Marcus thrived in that underworld. He'd built the largest gambling ring in Italy, trapping desperate souls with debts they could never repay. Those who failed him didn't just disappear; they were sold piece by piece, their bodies scavenged to pay back what they owed. I knew every ruthless detail of his empire, because I'd been his protégé, the weapon he'd shaped to secure his grip over this city. But not anymore. Today, I was here for retribution. And Marcus, of all people, should have known better.I reached Corte dei Leoni, his fortress in the heart of Nap
