Chapter 5
Alice's POV I finally arrived at my apartment, feeling the exhaustion settle deep into my bones. All I craved now was a long, hot bath and maybe a few hours of uninterrupted sleep. My feet ached from being cramped in heels all day, and I could feel the tension in my shoulders begging to be released. Dropping my bags in the living room, I headed straight for the bathroom, not even bothering to unpack. As soon as I slid into the bathtub, warm water enveloping me like a comforting embrace, I let out a deep sigh. The weight of the day seemed to melt away. I closed my eyes, sinking further, and felt a sense of peace finally creeping in. But, of course, peace was short-lived. Somewhere in the apartment, my phone began to ring. I'd left it in my purse, which was somewhere in the living room. I briefly considered ignoring it, but then again, I knew my dad would want to hear from me sooner rather than later. But whoever it was would just have to wait a few more minutes. After a good ten minutes of soaking, I finally rinsed off and stepped out, wrapping myself in a soft towel. My phone had stopped ringing by now, but just as I dried off, it buzzed again. This time, I reached for it, seeing "Dad" flash on the screen. I answered, barely able to stifle a small smile. "Dad! Hi," I answered, warmth seeping into my voice. "Alice, darling! I was beginning to wonder if you'd forgotten about me," he teased. "You didn't even stop by after landing." I rolled my eyes playfully, "Maybe if you didn't send me on all these company errands Nick should be handling, I'd have time for little things like…rest and visiting you." "Ah, Nick can barely keep himself together," he chuckled, brushing aside my jab at him. Then, after a pause, he slipped in, "But don't worry, soon you won't have to run these errands anymore…once you're married." My smile froze. "Dad…what did you mean by 'once I'm married'?" There was a short silence on the other end before he cleared his throat. "Oh, nothing, honey. Just…come over. We should talk about it in person." The suspicion in my chest hardened, but I couldn't deny him. "Fine. I'll be there soon." As soon as I hung up, I quickly got dressed, selecting a comfortable yet semi-professional outfit, my curiosity getting the best of me. Slipping into my shoes, I headed to my car and drove over, weaving through traffic as fast as I could. When I arrived at my dad's villa, the familiar warmth of the place made me momentarily feel at ease. As soon as I stepped inside, he greeted me with open arms, but as I stepped closer, I couldn't hold back. "Dad, what did you mean by 'once I'm married?'" I asked, crossing my arms and eyeing him suspiciously. He sighed, clearly hesitant but knowing he couldn't keep this from me any longer. "Alice, your marriage has been…well, arranged." His words hit me like a cold slap. "Arranged?" My voice was small, almost a whisper. "How could you do this to me?" So my plans for a fake marriage was never going to happen...it was going to be real this time, the thought hurt me more than i expected "Honey, listen," he said gently, reaching for my hands. "This isn't about control. I just want you to have someone to rely on, someone to share your life with. I thought—" I pulled back, feeling tears prickle the corners of my eyes. "You thought? Dad, I thought we were past this. If Mom was here, she would never push me into something like this." At the mention of my mother, his face softened, and he pulled me into his arms. I let the tears flow, unable to hold them back any longer. He held me in a tight embrace, his hands rubbing my back as he whispered soothing words. "I just want you to be happy, Alice," he murmured softly. "This isn't supposed to hurt you. Let's discuss it, calmly, okay?" I took a deep breath, nodding as I stepped back. "Alright, Dad. Let's talk about this...professionally." ****** Alice felt her father's gentle touch as he held her shoulders, his eyes softening in that fatherly way she hadn't seen in a while. She knew he loved her, but this arrangement still felt like a betrayal. Yet, as he spoke about the benefits of the engagement with a quiet confidence, she couldn't ignore the opportunity it would bring. "Alice," he began softly, "I wouldn't push you into this if I didn't believe it would protect our family's future. The Kings Group...they are powerful. Partnering with them means securing stability and growth for generations to come. You'd be part of something that could elevate both our companies, help us expand into new territories, open doors we never thought possible." Alice took a shaky breath, her mind torn. She felt the weight of her responsibilities pressing down on her, realizing just how much her father trusted her to carry the legacy he'd built from the ground up. "Alright," she finally whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'll go through with this... but only as a business arrangement. Nothing more. I'll be his wife on paper, but that's where it ends. My life, my freedom—those aren't up for negotiation." Her father's lips curved in a sad smile, understanding the wall she was building around her heart. "I wouldn't ask anything more of you. But Alice, life has a way of surprising us. Don't close yourself off completely... just give it a chance." She shook her head lightly, more in disbelief than anything else. "Let's stick to what we know, Dad. I'm not here for fairy tales." They exchanged a few more words, softening the moment with laughter and familiar memories. Finally, Alice stood to leave, gathering her things with a newfound determination. This was her path, as controlled and calculated as she wanted it to be. As she walked out of her father's villa and back to her car, her gaze shifted up to the darkening sky, stars just beginning to sprinkle through the dusk. She took a steadying breath. "It's just business," she reminded herself, hoping to convince her heart as much as her mind not realizing that the Alexander who she met and felt strongly attracted to was actually her fianceCHAPTER 6Alice's POVIt was past 7 p.m. when I finally got back home from my dad's house. I headed straight to the bathroom to wash my face, apply my skincare products, and change into my pajamas before retreating to my bedroom. My body had just barely hit the bed when I heard my stomach growl. Right, I'd forgotten dinner. I reached for my phone on the bedside table and ordered a pizza from my favorite restaurant. Placing the phone down, I lay there, staring up at the ceiling as my thoughts drifted back over the day's events."I can't believe I'm getting married to a total stranger," I scoffed to myself. The very thought of marriage made me recall Alex, the guy i almost proposed to, thank god i didn't carry on with my plan, because how the hell would i have explained to him that i was already engaged to someone else and i couldn't go on with the contract agreement... Still, I couldn't shake the inexplicable attraction I'd felt the moment I saw him. Yes, he was handsome, with a high,
CHAPTER 7 Alex's POV After warning her about the suspicious-looking delivery man, I exited the building but stood outside, waiting for him to come out. I couldn't just leave without making sure she was safe. But as the minutes dragged on, worry began to settle in my chest. Five minutes had passed, and there was still no sign of him. Without thinking, I darted back into the building, charging up the stairs two at a time. Taking the elevator would waste precious time—it would be forever before it reached the thirteenth floor as it seemed someone was already inside. Finally reaching her floor, I caught sight of her, struggling as he tried to push her against the wall. His hand moved toward his pocket, and I saw the glint of a knife. The bastard was going to stab her. Instinct took over. I lunged between them, taking the blow meant for her. Pain seared through my hand, but I barely felt it. Rage surged instead. How dare he even think of hurting her. Grabbing him by the collar, I swung
Chapter 8 Alice's POV I couldn't help but feel excited. Why? Because he was coming over today. Yeah, sounds ridiculous, right? We agreed to meet by noon, and I even decided to prepare something nice to serve him when he arrived. But all my cooking efforts ended in total disaster. Why was cooking so freaking hard? I tried making an omelet, but the motherfucker kept turning into scrambled eggs. I attempted to whip up some pudding, but it just wouldn't congeal. I even tried the simplest dish of all—Ramen noodles—but they got too soggy. You know what? I give up. My kitchen sink was now full of used plates and frying pans. I used an entire crate of eggs, and for what? Nothing good came of it. After tossing my apron in frustration onto the kitchen counter, I searched for my phone and decided to order some decent food online. I didn't know what he would like, but since most people liked seafood, I opted for that. I hoped he wasn't allergic. After placing my order, I flung my phone toward
CHAPTER 9 Alex's POV It was well past morning rush hour, so why the hell was I sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic at noon? The honking horns and exhaust fumes did nothing for my already frayed nerves. I hated delays—especially today, of all days. I had an appointment I couldn't miss, a promise I wouldn't break. I fished my phone from my pocket, dialing Michael. He picked up after two rings. "Alex? What's up?" "I need to borrow your motorcycle," I said without preamble, my tone sharper than usual. Michael let out a low chuckle. "Since when do you need a bike to get around?" "Since traffic decided to screw me over at the worst possible time," I snapped, impatience simmering in my voice. "Alright, alright. Where are you?" he asked. "Stuck on the Gardiner. Can't see the end of it." "Man, I thought rush hour was over," he mused. "I'll send one of my guys with the bike. Just hang tight." "Thanks, man," I muttered, ending the call and sinking back against the seat. I was only a f
CHAPTER 10 Alice's POV The gates to Madam Gray's villa were grander than I'd imagined, the kind you only see in movies. As we drove through, I felt a strange flutter in my stomach—a mix of nerves and excitement. My father gave me a reassuring smile, but even he seemed taken aback by the sheer elegance of the place. When we stepped inside, I was hit by a wave of warmth mingling with luxury. The chandelier above sparkled like something out of a fairy tale, casting soft light across cream-colored carpets and walls adorned with art that I was sure must be priceless. Every detail of the villa whispered elegance, and for a moment, I felt like I was in another world entirely. "Breathe, Alice," I whispered to myself. Yet, part of me couldn't help but feel like a stranger stepping into someone else's dream. Madam Gray appeared in the hallway, her smile warm and welcoming. She was more stunning in person than I'd imagined, dressed in a flowing silk gown that seemed to shimmer with every st
CHAPTER 11Alex's POVMy hands clenched around the steering wheel as I drove away from Madam Gray's villa, Alice's face lingering in my mind—the way she'd looked at me tonight, searching for answers I couldn't give her. The memory of her warm gaze and the quiet hurt in her eyes twisted something deep inside me, a reminder of all the reasons I'd sworn to never let anyone close. But then, Alice happened. She walked into my life, turning everything upside down, forcing me to question the walls I'd carefully built around myself. The envelope lay beside me on the passenger seat, its contents burning into my mind. Michael sent it to me saying someone dropped it off and that it was addressed to me, and from the first glimpse of those photos—dozens of pictures of Alice, taken from a distance, in moments she'd never even noticed—I knew who was behind it. The words scrawled on the note felt like a punch to the gut: "Found your Achilles' heel."The message was clear. Marcus had found her.The ma
CHAPTER 11Alex's povThe flight from Toronto to Naples stretched on, but sleep was impossible. The threat still echoed in my mind, pulsing with the steady rhythm of my heartbeat: Alice.Marcus Dared to threaten her life, like she was just another pawn in his endless game. This time, he'd gone too far.Naples greeted me with its deceptive charm, bright and chaotic in the early dawn. But beneath the city's beauty lay a darkness, and Marcus thrived in that underworld. He'd built the largest gambling ring in Italy, trapping desperate souls with debts they could never repay. Those who failed him didn't just disappear; they were sold piece by piece, their bodies scavenged to pay back what they owed. I knew every ruthless detail of his empire, because I'd been his protégé, the weapon he'd shaped to secure his grip over this city. But not anymore. Today, I was here for retribution. And Marcus, of all people, should have known better.I reached Corte dei Leoni, his fortress in the heart of Nap
CHAPTER 12Alice's POVMoving into Alex's mansion was something I'd prepared myself for, at least I thought I had. But nothing could have really prepared me for this.As soon as I stepped inside, I was struck by the sheer elegance of the place. Everything about it felt both grand and impossibly refined—almost like stepping into a world of timeless beauty. The foyer alone was enough to take my breath away: a sprawling marble floor, polished to a shine, reflecting the soft glow of the massive crystal chandelier above. The walls were adorned with intricate moldings and art that looked like it had come straight out of an auction catalog, the kind of pieces you only ever read about.A couple of maids were waiting for me, smiling warmly as they stepped forward. They introduced themselves, and one of them, a kind woman named Helen, took it upon herself to show me around. "Welcome, Miss Alice," she said, her voice gentle. "We're so glad to have you here."She led me through a spacious living
