Chapter 22

Alex's POV

"Alice, we need to talk," I said, keeping my voice steady, though inside, my heart was pounding hard. Nerves tightened every muscle, every thought in my head felt scrambled. I didn't understand why I felt this way, why she alone had the power to unravel me so completely. Me, Alex, who had lived through fire and blood, felt stripped bare in front of this one woman.

Since the moment I met her, she had a hold on me, one I wasn't sure I even wanted to break free from.

"Alex, let me… I… I want to say something to you too," she replied, her voice soft, almost hesitant.

"Okay, you go first," I said, my heart thundering in my chest as a thousand scenarios flooded my mind. Was she about to end this, draw a line between us? Had she already begun to regret this tangled, uncertain path we'd chosen?

"I'm sorry for what I said earlier," she began, her voice barely a whisper. I froze, the words hanging heavy between us. She was apologizing, but why? My heart pounded so loudly I
