After a long while, George sighed in relief. “Forget it. Ruth has been bearing grudges since she was young. You might not be able to persuade her.”

The conversation was still about persuasion, but George actually did not bat an eye when Abel mentioned the secret.

After a few seconds, Abel could not help but ask in a low voice, “Mr. George, why did you and Miss Rose choose to hide it?”

“Revealing the truth will be too hard on her.”

“But it’s not her fault.”

“That’s right. Children shouldn’t bear the grudges of the previous generation.”

George did not seem surprised that Abel knew about it. Since he brought it up, he could see that Ruth was aware of it, too. If one of them knew, how could the other not?

Abel looked at him and did not miss the expression on his face. He suddenly said in a hushed voice, “What I mean is that all of this actually has nothing to do with her. Why did you create such a secret?”
