Leo was downstairs having breakfast and he was sort of taking his time since the rain was still coming down heavily. I ignored breakfast because I didn’t want to sit at the table with him, I might just kill him if I do.
I went into the kitchen instead where Maggie was holding a blueberry muffin for me.
“I had a feeling you were going to skip breakfast this morning.”
“I’ll be fine.” But I took the muffin and took a bite before dropping it on the kitchen counter in favor of a bottle of water. For some reason I couldn’t stomach food and it had everything to do with Emerald’s death. How can Leo who is actually friends with her bear to eat?
“Should I keep that for later?” Maggie asked worried.
“Uh – uh,” I said.
I just couldn’t wait to get out of the house and so I snapped the hood of my sweater over my head and went outside to the garage through the kitchen door. Noah was waiting as always, dressed in suit, again. Almost immediately all thoughts about Emerald flew out of the window and I thought about those few seconds shared yesterday.
Noah had his back to me and I was curious to know if he felt my presence or at the very least heard me coming from the kitchen. He is a pack warrior and has gone through some intense training. Its frightening just how alert and ready to fight he can be (I have seen him in action so I know how fearsome he is), that was more than enough reason for me know that he had heard me and was pretending.
I stood at the top step and pulled my hoodie tighter to hide my face. Somehow I didn’t want him to see my bald head. It was the same yesterday. I didn’t care about my head until I saw him, that was the only time I really cared about how hideous I was.
He turned around as soon as I hit the last step. I guess he was tired of pretending especially when he knew I knew he was aware of my presence.
“Hi,” I said and started to rush to take the front seat. At least I’ll have it all to myself before Leo comes to claim it. This way he can have the entire back seat to himself. I hate him for what he said yesterday but I guess I kind of feel bad for what he must be feeling. You may think I get attached to people quickly but Leo gets attached just as quickly as he discards people. It will take a while before he gets over Emerald.
Noah didn’t smile or respond, he just stared and his eyes drifted to my head safely hidden by my hoodie. I squirmed under his gaze feeling as though his eyes were trying to pry the thick edges open so that he could laugh at the strands of hair remaining from my shaggily cut hair.
I fought the urge to dance from one foot to another and became defensive.
“What is it?”
“Is that accepted at Princeton? The hoodie?” he finally asked.
I shrugged nonchalantly but of course I was ‘chalant' – I know that’s not a word but you understand.
As it stands I’m already the ugly center of attention at school, the last thing I want to do is stand out even more.
I don’t know why he asked. Usually Noah and I only ever argue but this was an attempt at normal conversation and I was struggling with it. Believe it or not, I have no problem annoying Noah at any given time of the day but today is not that day.
Noah turned and opened the driver’s side, I thought he was opening it up for me but he leaned down and pulled out the glove compartment where he retrieved a package. He turned back and started to toss it at me, thought better of it and opened it before retrieving something made from wool. It was black and red.
“Here,” he held it out.
“What’s this?” I asked suspiciously. But my hand automatically reached out to collect it and my fingers sank into its softness. I looked up at him waiting for him to say something.
“Why don’t you have a look?”
I pulled the small wool object apart and controlled a gasp that fought to escape my lips. My eyes stung but not with tears, I was fighting the urge to blink and convince myself that this was nothing but a dream. But it wasn’t , the head warmer in my hand was very much real. I turned it over in my hand marveling at the simple ribs and knots.
It was fascinating enough but it was the woolen inscription that really made me what to drop every sense I had and hug him.
Iron Rose.
That was what was written on the black head warmer and it was done in bright red.
I looked up and found Noah watching me. I cleared my throat.
“Thanks.” My voice sounded oddly shy and I was tempted to look around the garage for who switched places with me but it was no one else but just me and Noah.
I started to put it on my head but his voice stopped me. I hadn’t noticed he moved until I looked up and he was right in front of me with his right hand lifted to my head. I wanted to cringe away from his touch but the look in his eyes stopped me. There was no way to describe the look in those hazel blue eyes but all I could see was that the usual anger toward me was replaced with something else, something I didn’t dare to believe.
I held my breath knowing what was coming next.
Noah removed the hoodie to reveal my bald head. But there was no repulsion in his eyes, none of the mocking laugh I had expected to hear.
“Although, personally, I think you look better without.”
I tried to remind myself to breathe. “Without my hair?”
“Without hiding.”
His eyes remained glued to my head and my eyes were raised to his, there was no sign of deceit in them. Now the tears were threatening to come again and I fought hard against them but one stupid tear slid stubbornly down my cheek.
Noah caught the movement and his eyes dropped to my face. The garage suddenly seemed so small, the space eaten away by how close we were now. His hand dropped from my head to my face and cupped the left side of my face, his thumb moving gently over my cheek as he wiped the tear away. That movement led his finger down my cheek to the side of my nose to stop at the top side of my mouth and his eyes followed the movement.
My lips parted unwillingly. I know I have opened my mouth to say something but now I wanted to just shut up and beg him with my eyes to kiss me. His moist lips looked soft and inviting but they remained closed. That’s fine, you can kiss me with your mouth closed too.
But he couldn’t hear my thoughts and so he continued to stare.
That tingling feeling I felt yesterday morning returned and this time it started from my chest like a spark of fire radiating warmth through my chest through my veins and arteries and spreading throughout the rest of my body. It was like a magnetic force pulling me closer to the one man I once vowed to piss off for the rest of my life.
And he was older. I’m 17 nearly 18 and he is 24.
I don’t know which one of us snapped back to reality first. Was it him or was it me? And was it the thought of our age difference that made him pull back ever so slightly?
I realized that it was me. I told you I am good at reading people’s faces and I saw deep in his eyes that he was thinking about just how far out of reach I was from him.
I decided to make it easier for him to pull back. “So did Miss Aurora tell you about my bald head while you were banging in her office or what?”
That succeeded in clearing the dazed look in his eyes completely. He stepped back clearly back to the good old Noah and just in time too because just then the kitchen backdoor was thrown open and Leo came out in dressed in a raincoat that covered his uniform and shoes.
Before Noah went to open the door for him at the other side he said, “That is none of your business.”
I swallowed at the hard time but forced myself to shrug it off. That was what I wanted. He was struggling to leave and I made it easier.
I got into car without saying a word to Leo, he didn’t say anything to me and I wasn’t bothered about his attitude anymore. The silence and awkwardness in the car was it broken by Noah playing some Dido songs and I leaned my head against the glass and drowned myself in the bittersweet lyrics of Life For Rent.
Still not saying a word to each other, Leo and I got out of the car and made our way into the school building. There was a change in the atmosphere and was expected and everyone was silently moving from the front doors to the assembly hall. And in the assembly hall the administrators and teachers stood on the stage waiting as students filled in the seats. I went upstairs leaving Leo behind and took a seat away from him. My other classmates began to troop into the hall and leading then was Parker, Todd, Keith, Lizzie and Jeannie. Jeannie’s nose was red as if she had been blowing her nose all night but strangely her eyes were as dry as a desert. She looked up and saw Leo and immediately left her group of friends to hook her arm through his, that was the only time any sign of tears appeared in her eyes as she clung to him. “It’s so awful,” I heard her say. “I don’t think I can stand being here knowing that only a few hours ago Emerald had an accident here.” She turned her big blue eyes
“Did Parker just leave after spending like 10 minutes with you?”I looked up to see Lindsay’s awe. She looked like Taylor Swift just offered her a ticket to her concert. She pushed the chair Parker just stood up from and very reverently lowered herself on it. I fought hard against rolling my eyes. Any second from now she might get home and take the chair to a museum because you know, Parker Farrell sat on it.“He did. What about that?”“I didn’t expect him to move on so soon and even if he was, I didn’t think you would be his next option.”I eyed her from the corner of my eyes. “Did ever occur to you that he came to pickup from where his girlfriend stopped?”She shrugged. “I don’t know, it never did. Maybe because Todd came over to talk to me. I didn’t think he even knew my name but he congratulated me on my promotion from C to A class.”I watched her go on and on about Todd while my mind drifted off to Parker. He was on his seat and Keith and come to join him. They were talking and l
By two in the afternoon the bell went off. Our next period was gym class. When we picked our subjects for our entrance exam into Princeton, I skipped gym because I kinda thought it would be unfair to surpass these poor human kids with my supernatural powers. Leo was on the football team. I don’t know how he plans to manage his powers when he has to play in slow motion with pathetic human speed.I’m sure he will figure it out though. He is not my concern right now.My target was moving out of class and I made sure I got behind him while still keeping a safe distance away. I didn’t want to lose him in case he slipped into the shadows or hid among students moving up and down the hall. Also the last thing I want is for him to notice I was onto him.I knew where he was heading to but I just couldn’t let him out of my sight. He turned around a corner same as other people. I did the same but waited a few feet behind so that he wouldn’t sense me. After a few minutes of walking we passed anoth
I jerked my arm free from Colin’s hold as soon as he swung the door of the art room close. The place smelled of paint and wood and brushes and many of the easels were covered with tarps. The place looked airy since it was currently not in use, which was why the windows were shut.At least Colin hadn’t locked the door. Even if he did I’m sure that whatever he is I am faster than him with my wolf powers.“What’s the big idea?” I demanded.“The fact that you’re stalking me or the fact that you are surprise I actually noticed?”“That’s not an answer to my question,” I said defensively.“Why are you following me?”I scoffed. “What makes you think I am following you, Colin?” I crossed my hands in front of me and glared at him. “What do you have to hide?”He didn’t answer quickly. He was careful, watching my face as if he was trying to decide how much I knew. Not much from my perspective. In fact, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to know. I didn’t know what to think; first his odd behavior
I couldn’t wait for the final bell and when it did ring I grabbed my books and shoved them into my bag, hurrying to get up and leave. If I leave early I can make it and do what I have to do.I know you are curious to know what that is, you will find out soon enough. Right now, I think what I am about to do is extremely dangerous and if I get caught , well, I don’t think I’ll be in too much trouble, I just think everyone in school will think I’m even weirder than they do now.I hurried to the pack and sure enough there was Noah as early as ever. I was about to smile, feeling that rush of warmth in my body again, when my joy was cut short when Miss Aurora ran across the pack to the car. She put her arms around Noah’s neck right in front of everyone who cared to look at them. She was smiling when she pulled back and as I got to them I heard them talking.“Thanks for last night,” she was saying.“It’s nothing,” Noah said in his sexy deep voice.Miss Aurora’s eyes were bright as she looked
I don’t know when the thought came but I remember thinking that whoever Lindsay’s driver is needs to be sacked for not noticing us behind him. If someone was behind us and Noah failed to notice I know I’ll be telling Maggie to replace him. The way it is though, I don’t think Noah will ever be caught lacking. The man is a true wolf and nothing misses his attention. The silver car went off the road and moved along a lone road toward private property and I expected Noah to go after it but surprisingly he went past the private road and continued to drive down. I sat up in the seat to glare at him. “We were following that car!” “And we are still following it.” “Yeah we were until you stopped going after it. It turned a corner right there.” “And that corner leads to a private road. I’m guessing you don’t want the girl in that car knowing that you are trailing her. This is the best way to prevent her from discovering that her classmate is a stalker.” “So how do you intend to find them
I sat back in the seat thinking about what I had just seen. “No, there’s nothing to talk about.” Noah said nothing but I felt his eyes on me when be backed out of the street and went back out through the secret road and joined the main traffic again. I was wrong about Lindsay. I thought she was an annoying rich girl struggling to climb the social ladder in school. I thought she was treating me as a pity case, trying to befriend the outcast like a social savior of some sort. But her life was far from that she was…sad. Very sad. I couldn’t get the image of her toasting her sandwich in the pan and the sound of her tears from my mind. Why was she crying? Did even need to ask? Wasn’t it obvious? The way she hurried to make sure the vase was okay…I don’t know what else to think. I slumped back in the seat and reached into my boots for the note that I stuffed there. Who could have written it? Emerald had many enemies and anyone could be one of them. “Whatever you are thinking about,
Imagine my surprise and satisfaction when I saw that my laptop remained right where I had locked it. At least I know for sure that whoever has been sneaking into my room to use my stuff doesn’t know that I locked it. I should probably keep locking it from now on. As I pulled the laptop out of my drawer I thought about the possibility that it was Stark who had been coming into my room to use my laptop but Maggie had gotten one for her too and I know Stark well enough to know that she wouldn’t use my stuff without telling me. Besides whoever has been using my laptop has been checking stuff about school so that completely rules out any possibility that Stark is behind this. So I have come to one natural conclusion, someone snuck into my room. Whoever that person is is behind the chocolate chips cookies I found in my room and the same person used my computer to log into our class group chat.
